You see, that's why the benefit versus risk argument is never applied to herbal remedies. herbal remedies don't benefit pharmaceutical companies, so there's no reason for the FDA to go out of its way to keep them on the market. In fact, the availability of herbal remedies competes with prescription drugs. Consequently, the FDA, which is out there to protect Big Pharma, has every reason to outlaw herbal remedies. That alone will boost the sales of prescription drugs. |

A survey of such herbal remedies sourced from India and Pakistan found that one in five of them were contaminated with dangerous levels of heavy metals like lead, mercury and arsenic. This is an important finding and worthy of discussion but, once again, the mainstream press is blowing this all out of proportion by claiming that all Ayurvedic herbal remedies are contaminated with heavy metals.
The people behind this announcement clearly have an agenda, and that agenda is to discredit all herbal remedies in an effort to call for new FDA oversight of herbal remedies and nutritional supplements. |

There are a number of parasite cleanses using herbal remedies, such as wormwood, green hull walnut tincture and clove or similar formulas, that also have detoxifying effects. Cleansing both the liver and colon while doing this is also helpful because it reduces the impact that the "die-off may have on your blood and lymph. Such methods of parasite cleansing, however, can take a long time and may be only partially successful, with one exception that I know of.
The mineral substance—sodium chlorite—may have the most balanced and immediate effects among all parasite cleansers. |
The use of herbal remedies is widespread. Their health care system is free for all citizens, and doctors receive bonuses for keeping their patients healthy and teaching them how to stay that way.]
Almost all prescribed drugs have a suppressive effect. This means that they interfere with the body's attempt to break down the very toxins that make it susceptible to disease-causing agents. To regain its balance, the body has to create a toxicity crisis, or disease. |

On September 5, 2004, the Washington Post ran a report with the headline: "Herbal remedies turn deadly for patients." How so? PC-SPES by all reports was prolonging life and saving men who were clinging to life. The Washington Post asserted the regulatory system of herbal product companies was flawed, claiming BotanicLab spiked its product with rat poison, the blood thinner that was eventually found in PC-SPES. The article called PC-SPES a "disaster," and reported 35 cases where users or their families claimed harm. These were men who were dying without hope. |

Liver toxicity associated with chaparral is explainable. Many herbal remedies, and even prescription drugs, contain molecules that inhibit detoxification liver enzymes (called cytochrome p450 enzymes). These enzymes dull the effects of medicines, herbs and food ingredients so they don't overwhelm the body. But if these enzymes are inhibited, as they are by chaparral, then any medicine, food or herbal product taken simultaneously may cause a heightened reaction to the second agent. Chaparral inhibits detoxification enzymes in the liver and can potentiate any other food, drug or herb. |
The information surrounding this herb is an example of the misinformation surrounding many herbal remedies. The pro-toxic drug, anti-herbal stance of the FDA is unconscionable. To digress for a moment, the FDA continues to ignore the 70,000 confirmed cases of liver toxicity that occur annually from acetaminophen pain relievers. The American Poison Control Centers count about 70-100 deaths per year from acetaminophen poisoning. More than 8 billion acetaminophen pills are sold annually. But the FDA chooses to issue a warning about chaparral, not acetaminophen (Tylenol). |

Different parts of the plants can also be used: bark, leaves, flowers or roots. herbal remedies can take the form of ointments, poultices, inhalations, teas, decoctions, tablets and tinctures.
There are large numbers of herbal teas available on supermarket shelves, but you can also make your own. Brewing or infusion times vary, but generally for tender plants such as basil, sage, mint, being steeped in boiling water for five minutes is sufficient, whereas tough herbs like coltsfoot or horehound need 10 minutes. A tea can be drunk or gargled, depending on the herb or symptom you are treating. |

Jerry discontinued the array of herbal remedies that he was taking for sleep and saw the chiropractor six times over the next three weeks. At the end of the three weeks, Jerry's pain was reduced success story and all of his sleep and digestive problems were gone. Since that time, he's experienced a few isolated episodes of insomnia, but as soon as those arise, he goes back for treatment and his sleep is restored.
The chiropractor's assessment was that there were two factors involved in Jerry's inability to sleep. |

Lycopene and prostate cancer
Lycopene is covered at length in the chapter on herbal remedies for cancer in this book. Readers should refer to that chapter for information about lycopene. Suffice to say, lycopene is one of the most promising dietary and supplemental anti-prostate cancer agents, though shortcomings in the way supplements are made have led to disappointments. |

Be wary of herbal remedies. I'm cautious about black cohosh, red clover and other plant remedies that have estrogen-like properties. Research has not demonstrated clearly that they help, and some can have harmful side effects if not properly monitored. However, some women do report good results when they use these remedies. Check with your doctor first. If you don't notice a clear change in symptoms after two to three weeks of trying a new remedy, ask your doctor about trying something else.

WORKING WITH YOUR DOCTOR
Most primary-care physicians can diagnose and treat common causes of pain, such as back pain, headaches and osteoarthritis. Depending on your problem, your doctor may refer you to a neurologist, orthopedic surgeon, rheumatologist or other specialist. These doctors may determine that you need surgery or other procedures to treat the underlying cause of your pain.
People who are in pain tend to minimize movement because it hurts. |

• Ginger is particularly helpful for people who have a sore throat and chills. Take a 500-milligram (mg) capsule or 2 milliliters (mL) of the tincture with 6 ounces of water four times daily. Even better, drink one cup of fresh ginger tea four times every day.
•Elderberry is excellent for flu-related fever. Take 10 mL of the tincture with 6 ounces of water three times daily.

¦ Overdosage: As we all know, "natural" is not synonymous with "benign," and an overdose of many "healing" herbs can have serious—even fatal—consequences. Whenever adverse effects of overdose have been found in the literature, they are reported here, along with the appropriate medical interventions to be undertaken when an overdose occurs.
¦ Dosage: Listed here are common modes of administration and representative dosage recommendations drawn from the literature. |

Of all the herbal remedies on the market, St. John's wort has the most substantial scientific research behind it. In Europe, the herb is often the first choice for treating mild to moderate depression, as well as dysthymia. Studies have repeatedly shown that St. John's wort works better than the leading prescription drugs, including Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and imipramine, and that it also poses fewer side effects than the drugs.
Nutritionally oriented practitioners usually reserve St. John's wort for treating mild to moderate depression but not major depression. |
Although herbal remedies are generally safe, they may increase or decrease the activity of prescription drugs you might also be taking. If you find yourself taking more than four to six supplements without experiencing clear benefits, it's time to start working with a nutritionally oriented physician. You'll find ways to locate a nutritional physician in the appendix. Don't be reluctant to spend the money—your improved well-being will be worth every penny.

Herbal remedies can also behave this way. Estrogen-like "hormone mimics" can get in the way of our body's ability to tell organs and glands what to do.
Estrogen is not just something the body makes, it's something the body can make more of, when exposed to things in food and the general environment. From studies conducted over the past three decades, we know that personal care products such as lotions, dyes, nail polishes, skin treatments, hair products, oils and creams can contain hormones and substances that act like hormones. |
His position was firm and clear; only medications derived from controlled studies, including herbal remedies, should be used in medical treatments. Chalmers had no problem concluding that smoke ought to be kept out of airplanes, because smoke left gooey, tar-laden marks that not only were unattractive but also mucked up the electronic equipment. They couldn't be good for our lungs either.
But what about substances in the environment that affect our health and our chance of getting cancer that leave no telltale signs? |

VVV Ginger (Zingiber officinale). One study showed that ginger appears to be as effective as the prescription drug metoclopramide (Reglan, Clopra) in reducing the nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. This is one use for ginger that you should discuss with your doctor. If he says that your blood-clotting ability is impaired, you should not take this herb while undergoing chemotherapy.
Of course, ginger helps with nausea from less extreme causes as well. |
