 Nutraceuticals may range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements, and diets to genetically engineered "designer" food, herbal products, and processed products, such as cereals, soups, and beverages. The increasing interest in nutraceuticals reflects the fact that consumers hear about epidemiological studies indicating that a specific diet or component of the diet is associated with a lower risk for a certain disease.

| Many herbal products are sold as cures. They come in pill form, as dried powders, or as extracted high potency liquids. The effectiveness of many of these products was originally founded on the use of whole/fresh products. Any processing, including drying, heating, chemical extraction, infrared exposure, freezing, etc. can modify the product to a point where its only usefulness may be its placebo effect.
Other important questions should be asked when considering the benefits of supplements. How much is clinically important? How often should the product be used? |

| Herbs: Some herbal products may help clear the hangover by enhancing the liver's ability to remove toxins. Liver detoxifiers sold in herb shops (Liv 52 is one example) may help if taken on a regular basis. Glutathione and milk thistle may also be helpful.
Medications: A drug called tolfenamic acid may help to relieve the symptoms of a hangover, and is safer to use than acetaminophen and ibuprofen. These pain relievers can usually be taken safely, however, unless extremely large amounts of alcohol have been consumed. |
| Bitter orange: An extract from the fruit or rind of bitter orange contains a compound called synephrine, which can be found in many weight-loss herbal products. Clinical trials have shown that it has some ability to enhance the metabolism and promote weight loss and the loss of body fat when used in combination with caffeine and other herbs. Some adverse effects have been reported, such as high blood pressure and increased heart rate, with individual case reports of more serious effects such as passing out or strokes. |
