Rhodiola rosea versus Other Adaptogens
So how does Rhodiola rosea compare with other adaptogens and medicinal plants? Since only a few studies have focused on the similarities and differences among medicinal herbs, the best we can do to answer this question is evaluate the quantity and quality of the research, then add our own clinical experience into the mix. We should point out that some herbs—notably Eleutherococcus senticosus, Panax ginseng, and Rhodiola rosea—have been the subjects of extensive investigation, while others have been largely ignored. |

Fortunately, nature has provide us a number of medicinal plants to help protect us from attack by these harmful pests. The coconut is one of these.
When you catch a cold or get the flu, how long does it stay around? For most people it lasts several days to a week or more. There is no medicine, no cure for the common cold or the flu. When you get sick you have to let your body fight its own battie. That's why it takes so long to get rid of it.
Not too long ago an associate of mine said she felt like she was coming down with the flu. |
Herbalists have noted for years that in regions where certain diseases are common, medicinal plants grow that can cure these diseases. This is why every culture in the world has a form of traditional medicine based on the use of local herbs. The people who live in the tropics where coconut grows are protected to some extent from malaria, yellow fever, and other common infectious organisms. The people in Panama have discovered the importance of coconut as a means of staying healthy. When they feel an illness coming on they increase their consumption of coconut, particularly the milk and the oil. |

The discovery that the trace element chromium is present in the glucose tolerance factor, led to the testing of medicinal plants that are recommended for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II. Test results showed that bean pods also contain a notable amount of chromium (about 1 ppm) [2], It is known that insulin is not effective in rats that are fed a chromium-poor diet. Whether the chromium content of the bean pods is responsible for the (weak) antidiabetic action requires further investigation [2].

Different phases of the clinical trials have been completed on 30 drugs so far. Seven drugs have been filed for grant of patent rights, while twenty-three drugs are in the process of patentization. Besides developing research drugs, the Council has also undertaken validation trials of twenty-six kit medicines for common ailments. Standardization work on forty-seven compound drugs and thirty-eight single drugs has been completed. |

Although scientists have yet to advance a single theory that accounts for the diverse benefits of adaptogens, studies point to several important mechanisms that make these medicinal plants frontline defenders against the effects of stress. First of all, they improve cellular energy production by raising levels of the essential high-energy molecules ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and CP (creatine phosphate)— both critical players in maintaining our energy reserves. |

In the last 150 years, medicine makers have evolved from local druggists or chemical makers to mid-sized manufacturing operations with regional distribution to very large research-based companies whose reach is truly global. |

Prickly Pear
Literally hundreds of these medicinal plants grow in Mexico and the Southwestern United States where its sweet red fruit is called tunas in Spanish. Because it grows in clusters on certain varieties of desert cactus, the prickly pear is technically a berry. The fruit is oval and has spiny thorns, which should be removed before handling. The skin and flesh have several hues—orange, red, and purple. The firm flesh tastes something like watermelon and contains edible seeds. The Aztecs used prickly pears to mitigate fevers and soothe irritated livers. |

Here coconut products enjoy a place of importance and are essential components of some of the medicinal preparations. Gynecologic Indications for Herbal Remedies
Herbal remedies are used in the treatment of menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea, and menopausal complaints in cases where stronger-acting drugs are not indicated or are declined by the patient. Two medicinal plants stand out in the frequency with which they are prescribed for gynecologic complaints: chasteberries (used chiefly for PMS) and black cohosh rhizome (used principally for menopausal complaints) (Schwabe and Rabe, 1998). In the adjoining box you will see a short list of medicinal plants related to ragweed, from the aster plant family, which might evoke allergic responses in some people. Unfortunately the aster herbs and shrubs are the largest family of flowering plants, comprising about 1,100 genera and 20,000 species. Interestingly, some of the plants from this family are used to treat allergies. Dr. Duke's database also lists individual phytochemicals that have been reported to be allergenic (see Resource Guide). |

"If I had laryngitis," says Dr. Duke, "I would drink pineapple juice with a pinch or so of ginger, nutmeg, rosemary and spearmint and a bit of licorice as a sweetener." All are laryngitis folk remedies with scientific validity, he says. You could also add thyme and cardamom, which are also therapeutic. If you have high blood pressure, he advises skipping the licorice. |

We chuckle at the famous "eye of newt" scene in Macbeth, while realizing that Shakespeare's son-in-law, John Hall, was a famous doctor of the time whose materia medica, a mere 400 years ago, regularly included a wide assortment of medicinal plants, minerals, and what seems to us today to include some bizarre insect and animal parts. All of this is remarkably like traditional Chinese herbal medicine. |
As its use spreads throughout the world, its practitioners will continue to classify and incorporate non-Chinese medicinal plants and substances as part of its treatment protocol. This is what I call planetary herbology, described in my book of the same title (Lotus Light Press, 1992). One of the most famous non-Chinese herbs, used for over 300 years by the Chinese, is American ginseng (Panax quinquejolium). |

Naturally, the medicinal plants having a high mineral content are generally reputed to heal disorders related to mineral deficiencies. It is easy to see that nature planned for us to maintain a certain balance of minerals and trace elements in our body through the consumption of certain plants. We can choose which vegetables to eat based on their richness in the elements that are necessary for our health. |
