So, chicken soup really offers nothing of value except, perhaps, the onions and garlic (the medicinal plants in the broth).
In contrast to processed salt, sea salt or Himalayan salt is very good for you. Mined from natural salt deposits, these salts contain an array of health-promoting minerals (including trace minerals), far beyond the sodium and chloride found in typical processed salt. Find some sources for sea salt and trace minerals at: http://www.WebSeed.com/Trace_minerals.html. |

The traditional use of medicinal plants in this region, which encompasses in particular the Departments of Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Amazonas, and San Martin possibly dates as far back as the first millennium B.C. (north coastal Cupisnique culture) or at least to the Moche period (A.D. 100-800), with healing scenes and healers frequently depicted in ceramics. |

The Pimas of Mexico also make heavy use of wild and medicinal plants in their diet. They also work hard, have no electricity or running water in their homes, and walk long distances to bring in drinking water or to wash their clothes. They use no modern household devices; consequently, food preparation and household chores require extra effort by the women. In contrast, the Pima Indians of Arizona are largely sedentary and follow the dietary practices of typical Americans. The results are astounding. |

Through my ongoing work with the company and the many subsequent trips to the Amazon, I learned more and more about the other medicinal plants that were used as natural medicines by the indigenous peoples in the rainforest and began importing those as well. My company quickly outgrew Clear Creek Ranch and it was time to sell it and move back into the city as the journey, which now seemed to have a life of its own, continued forward. |

The artichoke is one of the world's oldest medicinal plants. The ancient Egyptians placed great value on the plant—it is clearly seen in drawings involving fertility and sacrifice. Moreover, this plant was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans as a digestive aid. In 16th century Europe, the artichoke was favored as a food by royalty. |

Although he spent his free time absorbed in the cultivation of hundreds of medicinal plants, Cato wrote in his agricultural treatise De agri cultura ("On Farming," the oldest surviving prose work in Latin) that "eaten raw with vinegar, or cooked in oil or other fat, cabbage gets rid of all and heals all," from hangovers caused by overindulgence in wine to serious diseases such as cancer; he notes that applying a crushed cabbage leaf to the breast helps heal a cancerous ulcer. |

Although suma is claimed as an ancient Brazilian folk remedy, no confirmation of that statement is found in the modern literature on medicinal plants. Advocates have claimed suma is an immune enhancer, an adapto-gen (helps combat sttess), and that it possesses anticancer activities. Test tube studies do indicate possible anti-tumor activity of suma constituents called pfaffo-sides. |

If this new venture/ adventure is successful, my next book may well be on North American Indian medicinal plants and the need to put our own Native Americans back onto their ancestral lands (now owned and controlled by our government's forestry agencies) as caretakers of the land in sustainable plant harvesting programs. What an adventurous journey that will be! Believe it or not, I haven't been bored—not once—in the last nine years; that doesn't look like it will be changing any time soon, either! |

Researchers estimate that the world's rainforests contain literally thousands of potentially useful medicinal plants. Rainforests exist on every continent, though most research attention is currently directed at the rainforests of South America, particularly in the Amazon, and of the South Pacific Islands. Out of this rich storehouse of natural remedies, only a handful are now commonly found in health food stores, among them pau d'arco, boldo, cat's claw, kava, yerba mate, suma, yohimbe, guarana, and passionflower. More and more rainforest remedies are becoming available. |

WORLDWIDE ETHNOMEDICAL USES TABLE
Ethnic uses of medicinal plants can be very important. If a plant has been used in a specific way for a specific purpose for many years and in many different geographical areas, there certainly is a reason for it: it is probably effective. It is this information that helps scientists target which plants to research first and what to study them for. In fact, the majority of our plant-based drugs or pharmaceuticals were discovered through this documentation process. The Worldwide Ethnomedical Uses table summarizes all the documented ethnic uses of the plant. |
Many secrets and untold treasures about the medicinal plants used by shamans, healers, and the indigenous people of the rainforest tribes await discovery. Long regarded as hocus-pocus by science, the empirical plant knowledge of the indigenous peoples is now thought by many to be the Amazon's new gold. Their use of the plants provides the bioprospector with the clues necessary to target specific species to research in the race for time before the species are lost to deforestation. |

Lemon balm is frequently combined with other medicinal plants. For example, peppermint (page 726) and lemon balm together are effective for calming upset stomach (page 260). Valerian (page 756) is often combined with lemon balm for insomnia. Bugleweed (page 647) (Lycopus virginicus) and lemon balm have been used together for Graves' disease.

The era of the 'herbalists' coincided with the discovery of the New World between 1492 and 1500. In the year 1500 Alvarez Cabral landed on the coast of Brazil and claimed it for Portugal. This marked the beginning not only of the avid acquisition of gold but of the natural wealth of the New World as well. Then, as now, Europeans were interested in all forms of plants and their uses. Thus began the introduction of newly imported plant species to Europe's botanical gardens, and medicinal products, such as balsam and tropical drugs, to its apothecaries. |

These plant pigments are responsible for many of the health benefits of many fruits and medicinal plants, but chocolate may be a much more sensually pleasing vehicle. In addition, there is evidence that not only is chocolate rich in flavonoids, but that factors in chocolate somehow dramatically increase the absorption of these compounds. The key flavonoids are proanthocyanidins (also called procyanidins) similar to those found in grape seed extracts, apples, berries, and pine bark extract. Chocolate is very well endowed with these compounds. |

It sounds almost too simple, but it's effective and it works.
The only component left to make this business strategy work is to create the market demand for these sustainable forest resources so that it can result in profits for those participating. That's not as hard as it sounds either. The alternative health and natural/herbal products industry in the United States is growing at an unprecedented rate. |

Description This is an annual or short-lived perennial with prostrate branches that may reach a metre or more in height. The oval, pointed leaves are smooth, not downy as in Cape gooseberry. A single yellow flower with brown or purplish spots is borne in each leaf axil. A tight-fitting, papery husk formed from the calyx encloses the yellow, green or purple berry, which is typically wider than long. |

Food and medicinal plants are both important in the dietary control of hyperlipidemia. Garlic (Allium sativum) is one plant that might be described as both food and medicine. Another herbal food that lowers serum cholesterol is fenugreek seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum), which is used as a condiment. Other naturally occurring hypolipidemics include khellin, from Ammi visnaga, and guggulsterone, from Commiphora mukul. |
If they do not like the medicine, they will not take it, and medicinal plants work only if they are actually taken.
Treatment of Indigestion in Children
The key to success here is selecting appropriate carminative remedies that will also be palatable to the child. Carminatives will ease the movement of food or gas through the intestinal tract. Carminative oils stimulate intestinal peristalsis, the wavelike contractions that move food through the intestine and promote the expulsion of gas from the gastrointestinal tract. |

Fenugreek is one of the oldest medicinal plants, dating back to the ancient Egyptians and the Greek Hippocrates. Early Egyptians prepared a thick paste by soaking the seeds in water; this was used to prevent fevers, to soothe stomach disorders, and to treat diabetics. The seeds are high (40 percent) in mucilage, as well as an emollient soothing to the skin, and are used as an emulsifier in drugs and food. They are also rich in fixed oils that are often compared to cod liver oil preparations, as they contain choline and vitamin A (and upon oxidizing produce a distinct "fishy" odor). |

Of course, there is much more to preventive medicine than consuming medicinal substances, whether medicinal plants or chemical drugs. We can help put this in perspective by recalling the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of health:
Health is a state of complete physical, emotional, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
This should serve to remind us that any attempt to promote wellness and prevent the development of disease must address the whole complex of factors that WHO identified. |
Spermicidal and Contraceptive Activities
In the ongoing effort to find new sources of contraceptive agents, numerous medicinal plants have been investigated for antifertility effects. Saponins have a variety of important activities in this area, including spermicidal effects. The mechanism of action here probably involves a disruption of the spermatozoid plasma cell membrane, similar to the action of the commercially available spermicide nonoxynol-9.
Other Effects
Saponins may help protect the liver through some impact upon the Kupffer's cells, immune system cells found in the liver. |
