The study found that the herb is actually much more effective than antidepressant drugs, since more than half of those taking St. john's wort in the trial experienced improvements in symptoms of mental depression. Conversely, only one-third of those taking the popular antidepressant drug showed such improvements. Not surprisingly, those taking the herb also showed significantly fewer negative side effects compared to those taking the prescription drug. |

John's wort, and several more are still underway, including some under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health.
St. john's wort is grown in many different areas, including North Africa, Europe, western Asia, Canada, Australia, China, and the United States (especially northern California and southern Oregon). The characteristic bright yellow flowers contain a red pigment, known as hypericin, which is one of the active constituents. When you get a "standardized" preparation of St. john's wort, it is standardized to hypericin. |

5-HTP
A form of the essential amino acid tryptophan, 5-hydroxy-tryptophan is the chemical precursor to serotonin. Researchers believe that it increases serotonin levels in the brain, which reduces depression and anxiety. A beneficial dosage is 300 to 400 mg daily.

Hypericum perfoliatum
St john's wort extract, standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin (see Ch. 93), at a dosage of 300 mg three times daily has been shown to improve SAD.130 However, although effective on its own, St john's wort extract is more effective when used in combination with light therapy. This was demonstrated in a double-blind study where patients with SAD were randomized in a 4 week treatment study with 900 mg/day of St john's wort extract (0.3% hypericin content) combined with either bright (3000 lux, n = 10) or dim light (<300 lux therapy). |

Prozac and other antidepressant drugs, as well as the herb St. john's wort, begin boosting serotonin levels almost immediately. By doing so, they should rapidly relieve depression. However, these therapies typically take two to four weeks to have a noticeable effect, suggesting that they work by another mechanism.
This delay in exerting an antidepressant effect has led some researchers, such as Rene Hen, Ph.D. |
Many of the compounds found in ginkgo, St. john's wort, ginseng, and other herbs are also found in vegetables and fruits. However, other compounds are highly distinctive and found only in certain herbs, such as the ginkolides in ginkgo and the ginsenosides in ginseng.
How to Take Flavonoid Supplements
As with carotenoids, the best way to obtain a diverse selection of flavonoids is by eating a diet with a healthy range of vegetables and fruits. The reason is simple: no supplement can provide the variety of flavonoids found in foods. |

The vast majority of stories emanating from the media arise from single case reports, letters-to-the-editor, and poorly conducted research that would never be accepted by the guardians of knowledge occupying the seats of power in our medical universities, and who control the scientific journals. When those working in the area of nutraceuticals attempt to have a paper published in a traditional medical journal, they meet stiff resistance. |

These results indicate direct inducing effects of St. john's wort on intestinal P-glycoprotein/ MDR1 (in rats and humans), hepatic CYP3A2 (in rats), and intestinal and hepatic CYP3A4 (in humans). Therefore, the results of this study provide a mechanistic explanation for the previously observed drug interactions in patients and support the importance of intestinal P- glycoprotein/MDR 1 in addition to intestinal and hepatic CYP3A4 for overall drug absorption and disposition in humans.

Most antidepressants are synthetic compounds, but the use of St. john's wort herb Hypericum perforatum L. has grown considerably in recent years as a herbal treatment for mild to moderate depression. Although the herb has been known for centuries, it was mainly used for other purposes such as wound healing, and its current popular use does not have a very strong traditional base, although the plant was reputed to ward off evil spirits—a property which might indicate some psychological effects. |
A recent three-way study claimed that St. john's wort has no effect in major depression but it has been pointed out that the standard drug used in the study also showed no significant effect.20 The chemical basis for the observed clinical effects is still not completely elucidated, although the monoamine oxidase inhibitory effects of the flavonoids, and possibly the naphthodione hypericin, and the serotonin reuptake inhibitor phloridzin, are considered to play major parts in the overall effect. |

Saint John's Wort
_(Antimicrobial/Anti-Depressant)
Saint john's wort is the common name for a family made up of about two hundred species of herbs, the best known of which is called Hypericum perforatum. St. john's wort had never been, prior to 1988, a major star in the world of medicinal herbs. In fact, because it grows as an aggressive weed, many have considered it to be quite a nuisance. Hypericum infestation of the pasture and range lands of California led to serious financial losses in 1930. |

• Chromium picolinate tablets (200 meg) to balance blood sugar.
• Oscillococcinum, a homeopathic remedy, to prevent the flu. Open one tube, pour it into your mouth, and suck on the contents until gone (it's tiny sugar pellets). Since this is a homeopathic remedy, it is important not to consume caffeine, menthol, or peppermint within 30 minutes of taking it. Take every six hours. If it doesn't work after three tubes ifs probably not going to. Oscillococcinum's action is fast and dramatic when it works. |
