Native Americans are believed to have used blue cohosh flowers to induce labor and menstruation.1 Turn-of-the-century physicians in the United States who treated with natural remedies (known as Eclectic physicians) used blue cohosh for these same purposes and also to treat kidney infections, arthritis, and other ailments. |

Eating more garlic or taking a garlic supplement is probably good for your heart and circulatory system. It may very well prevent stomach cancer as well, says Dr. Sporn. There are questions, however: How much garlic should a person take? How often? In what form? Doctors who want to answer these questions hear many opinions but few firm recommendations.
"We do know that garlic has some anti-cancer properties," says Dr. |

Europe for promoting lactation. A double-blind study found that 15 drops of a vitex tincture three times per day could increase the amount of milk produced by mothers with or without pregnancy complications compared with mothers given vitamin Bt (p. 337) or nothing.24
Goat's rue (Galega officinanlis) also has a history of use in Europe for supporting breastfeeding. Taking 1 teaspoon of goat's rue tincture is considered by European practitioners to be helpful in increasing milk volume.25 Studies are as yet lacking to support the use of goat's rue as a lactagogue.

Atherosclerosis (p. 17) (hardening of the arteries) of the vessels that supply the heart with blood is the most common cause of heart attacks. Atherosclerosis and high cholesterol usually occur together, though cholesterol levels can change quickly and atherosclerosis generally takes decades to develop. Read the atherosclerosis (p. 17) chapter for information about preventing atherosclerosis with dietary, lifestyle, and other changes.
The link between high triglyceride (p. 85) levels and heart disease is less well established than the link between high cholesterol and heart disease. |

In cases of acute sinusitis, the therapeutic goals are to reestablish drainage and to clear the acute infection. When I traveled to Germany to learn the water therapies of the famous Father Sebastian Kneipp, I was able to read old manuscripts from the 1800's that were only available in the Kneipp library. In those books, Father Kneipp described exactly how he healed people of smallpox without the least trace of a scar. He described how people would come from all over Europe on their last hope because no doctor had been able to help them. He dealt with severe fractures, cancers, parasites, infections, exhaustion, gangrene, heart failure, and many other serious diseases - all with natural remedies. |

Chromium and Niacin: Partners in Blood Sugar Control
Chromium is one of your key supplements when you need better blood sugar control. The people who make those awful bottled "natural" fruit drinks and teas aren't going to like this, but it's possible that the steep rise in our consumption of high fructose corn syrup has contributed to the rise in diabetes by depleting chromium. |

The Free Radical impact
History of Free Radicals
In 1954, the free radical theory of aging was first described by Dr. Denham Harman, who declared that a "single common process, modifiable by genetic and environmental factors, was responsible for aging and death of all living things." He identified this process saying, "Aging is caused by free radical reactions, which may be caused by the environment, from disease and intrinsic reactions within the aging process." Dr. |

Alma Hutchens tells us that in Russia they call camomile by the "tender-sounding name of Romashka." The demand is said to be great, and Russians use it from cradle on for colds, stomach troubles and colitis, as a sedative and a gargle, and topically for eczema and inflammation. In India, Hutchens adds, camomile is called Babunah and is especially valued for women's complaints as well as indigestion and for soothing children. |
He tried an emery nail file and worked on the warts until they almost bled, but had to stop because they became so inflamed.
The warts stayed with him for many years. Then, he was told by a neighbor that the juice of the aloe plant, famed as an anti-inflammatory agent, could be useful in getting rid of warts. What the neighbor had done was to deliberately burn his wart with a match and then apply juice from the aloe leaf, so the inflammation would disappear along with the wart.
Dr. Rosier said that by coincidence, at about this time, a Ph.D. |
