At most, lard or vegetable oils are added, wheat flour is sometimes substituted for cornmeal, and a wider range of herbs is used for seasonings. Many, many other indigenous foods, however, are no longer eaten on a routine basis, if at all. Their demise is part of a pattern of profound cultural change that has been correlated with several waves of native crop extirpation following the arrival of conquistadors, colonists, and diseases from the Old World. |

The formulas and herbs don't propose to cure cancer as such, but many of them do alleviate pain and prolong life by supplementing and strengthening the body's life force and by arresting the progression of tumors.42
The various herbal remedies for different types of cancer are said to work by circulating the blood and dissipating "stagnation," detoxifying and "dissipating hard lumps," "breaking accumulations," "treating coagulation," "treating weak vitality," "dispersing heat," and so forth. |
Pharmacological Approaches
A vast range of pharmacological approaches to cancer includes pharmacological use of nutritional supplementation, herbs, and hundreds of other unconventional pharmaceutical agents, new and old. Laetrile, vitamin C, the mistletoe extract Iscador, and hydrazine sulfate are examples of a few of these pharmacological treatments. Pharmacological approaches are among the most common unconventional cancer treatments.
Herbal Approaches
Herbal therapies for cancer are largely derived from traditional eth-nomedicines from hundreds of different medical traditions. |
The cluster of clinics and practitioners in Southern California and along the Mexican-California border that offer a wide range of options, such as laetrile, Hoxsey herbs, nutritional-metabolic therapies, and immunosupportive therapies.
In the United States, most cancer patients seeking to combine conventional and unconventional cancer therapies characteristically find themselves integrating some combination of therapies from these seven subcultures with a judicious use of mainstream therapies. |

The treatment of Charles II is a case in point:158
A pint of blood was extracted from his right arm and a half pint from his left shoulder, followed by an emetic, two physics, and an enema comprised of fifteen substances; the royal head was shaved and a blister raised; then sneezing powder, more emetics, and bleeding, soothing potions, a plaster of pitch and pigeon dung on his feet, poisons containing ten different substances, chiefly herbs, finally forty drops of extract of human skull and an application of bezoar stone; after which his majesty died. |

Natural anticancer substances are being discovered not just among the traditional herbs, but among many land and sea species that are not generally thought of as edible. In this category are included a variety of substances from the earth and the sea that are yielding important new ways of influencing the immune system. They include exotic oils, unusual fish products (such as shark cartilage), algae and seaweeds. The medical use of mushrooms alone is a major development in cancer treatment. |

Four-year survival rates were 54% for the combined treatment, 46% for the group receiving electricity, and 40% for the group receiving herbs. The amount of electricity applied was approximately 100 coulombs/cm3 of tumor. Needles were inserted into the tumors to act as electrodes (Xin, 1993).
Electrical currents may retard tumor growth by normalizing cell proliferation rates (Vodovnik et al., 1992). Nondividing cells (such as mature neurons) exhibit a high transmembrane potential (TMP). The TMP is the difference in electrical charge between the inside and outside of the plasma membrane. |

Indeed, severe liver damage has been reported after ingestion of a number of herbs including germander {Teucrium chamaedrys), chaparral leaf (from the creosote bush, Larrea trindentata), senna, mistletoe, skullcap, and gentian. And, for those of you who watched television in the 1970s, the creators and producer of The Gong Show, were, technically speaking, products of nature. So not all products of nature are good for you.
Much of the study of medicine through the ages has been to figure out which natural products are good for you and which ones aren't. |
This law allowed herbs, plant products, vitamins, and some chemicals to be sold as dietary supplements provided that health or therapeutic claims were not specified on the label. What constitutes a therapeutic claim is apparently unclear. For example, some preparations of Echinacea purpurea have labels that contain phrases like "immune support formula."
In a sense, the FDA has taken a step back from these "alternative" products. When you go to the pharmacist and ask for an antibiotic prescription to be filled, you can be guaranteed of two things. |
For some herbs, plant products, and chemicals this is not always the case.
Because the FDA does not strictly control these "alternative" products, a dietary supplement at a nutrition center may not contain what it is said to contain. A label stating that a product contains 10 mg of zinc may not be correct—the product could actually contain 50 mg of zinc or 0 mg of zinc. In addition, although only zinc is listed on the label, there may be other impurities. |
In 1775
William Withering evaluated each of the herbs contained in those teas and found that one, digitalis, was important in strengthening the heart muscle. Subsequently, this compound, now synthesized as the medicine digoxin, was tested in scientific studies to see whether it worked and in which situations it worked best.
Personal experience is fine, but "alternative" medicines should not be exempt from scientific study. c Laboratory Studies (Does it work in a test tube and in animals? |
Virtually all of the information on the use of various herbs, plants, plant products, vitamins, and chemicals has been generated by laboratory studies. For example, many studies showed that substances such as garlic, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin E, and ginseng either enhanced certain immune responses or directly killed bacteria or fungi. Laboratory studies fall into two categories: in vitro studies and in vivo studies.
If an investigator wanted to see whether garlic treated certain bacterial infections, she could do a number of things. |
It is important to remember this when we discuss evidence that various herbs, plants, plant products, and vitamins "work" to treat the symptoms of viral infections. c Scientific Studies in Large Groups of People (Epidemiologic Studies)
Another kind of study is one that involves the way that large groups of people behave (epidemiologic studies). For example, certain substances—like garlic, onions, oregano, and peppers— have the ability to kill bacteria and fungi in a test tube. |

Ginseng is one of the oldest, most widely used and scientifically studied of all the world's herbs. The original proponents of ginseng were Chinese physicians several thousand years ago, using it to treat nearly every conceivable ailment. Given the known "adaptogenic" qualities of ginseng, the enthusiasm of these ancient Chinese doctors may have been well placed. Ginseng is a plant species terra (Panax) which is further subdivided into Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng), Panax japonicum (Japanese ginseng), Panax pseudoginseng (Himalayan ginseng) and Panax trifolium. |
As an unintentional byproduct of using these seasoning agents, like cinnamon, garlic, hot pepper, ginger, and curry, our ancestors were able to keep the cancer incidence well below what we currently have. Fresh herbs vary from 20 to 27 Hz. These can help the body maintain it's proper high electrical frequency.
When substances of higher frequency come in contact with disease causing organisms of a lower frequency the disease causing organisms are destroyed. Bruce Taino has recently demonstrated that the frequencies of essential oils range from 52 Hz to a whopping 320 Hz, depending on which oil was being studied. The essential oils have the highest frequencies of any substances known to man. |

The miserable, dark, crowded, and stressful conditions under which it is raised require that it be dyed and injected with enzymes and herbs to mask its poor quality. The large vitamin and mineral suppliers generally conform to "USP" standards, and their products are reliable. But herbs and food extracts, such as concentrated berry supplements, vary considerably in their ingredients and potency, as we shall see.
Lately, the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA), has instituted a "TruLabel program." Under this program, companies pay for an independent laboratory to test their products at random. If a test reveals that a product or ingredient is deficient, the member company is then contacted and given a brief period to correct the problem. |
