Experiment with combining fresh and dried herbs and spices or adding a dash of herbed vinegar or fresh citrus juice. Other salt-reducing tips include:
• Avoid processed foods.
• Use salt substitutes.
• Eat more fruit.
Easy to Eat Sweet
Sugar substitute possibilities are everywhere. The pink stuff, the blue stuff—whatever your choice, they can help people with diabetes satisfy their sweet tooth without falling off the food-plan wagon.
Technically, most sweeteners are classified as nutritive or nonnutritive. |

Herb Flax Butter
Vl cup or 24 teaspoons
Enhancing butter with fresh herbs and other flavorings is nothing new. Here we've lowered the saturated fat of butter and increased the alpha-linolenic acid content by mixing it with equal parts of flaxseed oil. (Flaxseed oil has roughly 7 grams of alpha-linolenic acid per tablespoon.) The end product is a soft spread, much like tub margarine. Use it over steamed vegetables, or omit the lemon and try it on mashed potatoes. |

Natural herbs and foods as well as medications that can no longer be patented won't be "pushed" in advertising because there's no real money to be made on them.
A good demonstration of this fact can be seen in the use of aspirin. Studies have demonstrated that patients can avoid or reduce many heart problems, keep pain in check, and reduce the chances of getting some types of cancer simply by taking small numbers of aspirin tablets. |

These herbs should not be used by people who are HIV-positive, except under a doctor's supervision. The following are safe and well studied, but should be avoided during pregnancy or nursing:
Echinacea species, popularly known as coneflower or Black Sampson, grow wild across the American Midwest from Wisconsin to Texas. All parts of the Echinacea plant have been used for centuries by Native Americans to treat wounds and snakebite. Recent studies on its effects reveal marked stimulation of many immune functions, including increased activity of phagocytes. Echinacea appears to be very safe. |

Medications, supplements, herbs, homeopathic remedies, intradermal allergy testing, and EPD all have the potential to overload this type of individual. For both of us, several rounds of intradermal allergy testing were followed by significant increases in our sensitivities. Several of our clients described similar experiences. The Limbic Dysregulation Hypothesis described in Appendix I provides a rationale for why intradermal testing done intermittently could produce a heightening of sensitivities. |
After our sessions with Steven and my taking his training, we consistently used kinesiology to determine which foods, supplements, herbs, and other substances were beneficial for us and which were not.
Muscle testing is as much an art as a science. It is a skill developed with practice which allows us to tune into energy changes in others and in themselves. Muscle testing can be done either with another individual or for one's self (self-testing). |
Healing our physical bodies with such interventions as special diets, herbs, and a toxin-free environment was an important first step in our recovery; but until we understood what we were trying to show ourselves, we remained locked in a state of victimization and fear, unable to return to a full and productive life. The many avenues we pursued in our healing allowed us to slowly release layer after layer of physical and emotional toxicity and to become aware of the bigger picture of our environmental illness. |
She made the diagnosis of candidiasis and agreed that a yeast-free diet together with anti-Candida herbs was the best approach.
By early October, we continued to feel achy in the house and were increasingly sensitive to mold outside. We could no longer go for walks in the beautiful countryside. The deterioration in my health now limited my ability to appreciate that beauty. Often, I wished I had never heard of the Berkshires.
We continually looked for ways to lessen our mold sensitivities. |
We were too sensitive to tolerate the antigen drops, herbs, and homeopathic remedies that are frequently used in alternative treatments of environmental illness.
The second part details our plight as our sensitivities continued to worsen. We put all our energies into creating a "safe house," but to no avail. By spring of 1991 we could not tolerate the inside of the house and had to sleep outdoors in a tent. Searching beyond holistic and alternative medicine, we discovered several energetic healing methods that helped temporarily; but we could not sustain the improvement. |

Also, some herbs, such as valerian and chamomile, are mildly sedating.
Vitamin B3, or niacin, attaches to the same receptors in brain cells as the benzodiazepines and GABA. Therefore it has a mild calming effect on many people. It is especially effective when taken with GABA, shordy before bedtime. Niacin usually causes the skin to flush, or redden, for about twenty minutes, because it dilates capillaries. Some people find this mild tingling and warmth pleasurable; others find it annoying. |
These include such nutrients as Ginkgo biloba and various other herbs from the Asian pharmacopeia, such as ginseng. Other natural medicinal tonics that are of particular benefit are phosphatidyl serine, phosphatidyl choline, and acetyl-L-carnitine.
Another nutritional tonic I often recommend is a "green juice" that includes such ingredients as blue-green algae, wheat grass, and spirulina. These products are the richest possible sources of partial proteins called peptides, which the brain converts to neuropeptides (such as the well-known beta endorphins). |
Nutritional Therapy for Insomnia
Too often, even the "naturalistic" nutritional therapies for insomnia consist of just using nutrients or herbs to "drug" an insomniac's imbalanced neurochemistry. I recommend a much more enduring approach that consists of restoring metabolic balance to the brain bioche mistry, so that it doesn't need to be drugged with "nutritional downers."
One of the primary metabolic imbalances that leads to chronic biochemical insomnia is a deficit of melatonin. |
On a regular basis, he took a number of brain nutrients: vitamins, minerals herbs, Ginkgo biloba, lecithin, and the brain-cell nutrient DMAE. Also, he told me that he tried his best to moderate his exposure to stressors, and that he didn't have any overtly negative habits, such as drinking too much alcohol. He was already taking the pharmaceutical hormone replacement substance DHEA.
It was very apparent that he was investing a significant amount of time and energy in being mentally fit. But somehow the various pieces of his "puzzle" of brain regeneration just weren't fitting together. |

Some acupuncturists also employ herbs, massage, or other Eastern techniques in their treatments. Due to the possibly uneven results and unknown nature of this work, you're probably better off avoiding such treatments. If you're trying out acupuncture, you should stick with just these treatments to be sure you're not going through a procedure or ingesting a substance that might actually make you worse.
Skilled Acupuncture
Physicians can perform acupuncture anywhere in the US; in some states, such as Arizona, Georgia, Ohio and New Hampshire, only doctors can administer acupuncture. |

That means no pharmaceutical — or the universities they hire to do research for them — is going so spend money studying the beneficial effects of herbs, vitamins, or the like. There's no money to be made in such research, even though it might lead to many medical breakthroughs. It's a sad fact that you can't make truckloads of money marketing medications the corporation doesn't have full control over.
(For US buyers, prices are inflated as high as the market will allow. US prices for medications are 50 percent higher than in Canada. |

Foods That Can Balance or Unbalance Your Constitution
Guidelines and Perspective for Vata Food Intake for Vata People
Tata people are most balanced when they eat regular, small meals
V three times a day plus snacks. Excesses in eating, both in timing and amount of food at one time, may lead to vata imbalance. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are extreme examples of this type of imbalance.
For vata, a meal is best if limited to a small number of food varieties. |

You needn't limit yourself to rice cooked in plain old water; it can be cooked in broth or juices, too, and with herbs, spices, and seasoning. Simmering rice in a covered pot is the conventional preparation, but it can also be cooked in an open pot or in the microwave.
Rice can be served as a main dish or side dish; with meat or vegetables; with salsa or vinaigrette; as a stuffing or a bed on which to serve something else. And as risotto or pilaf, in a soup or a pudding, in a salad or as cereal. Let your imagination be your guide. |
Instead of sour cream, use ricotta cheese or yogurt cheese, add herbs, finely chopped vegetables, and perhaps a dash of Tabasco. The result makes a new kind of sandwich spread as well as a potato topping. Or, mix yogurt cheese or nonfat cream cheese with cinnamon, vanilla, and chopped fresh or dried fruit for a sweet topping on cereals, pancakes, toast—or on its own for a dessert. |

Along with lymphatic cleansers, the formula contains herbs that are thought to support the liver, nourish the blood, and fight infection—all factors that are crucial in healing acne.
HYDROTHERAPY: An Herbal Steam Bath for Your Face
A weekly steam bath for your face can open and drain the pores, helping to heal acne and prevent new outbreaks, Elias says. Adding the herb yarrow to the steaming water is very healing to the skin, he says.
Using 1 teaspoon of loose tea or a tea bag, prepare an 8-ounce cup of yarrow tea, steep for 30 minutes, and add it to a basin of steaming water. |
Topical Relief—Naturally
Many different types of natural remedies, including essential oils, herbs, and formulations from Chinese medicine, can provide relief from the symptoms of dermatitis.
AROMATHERAPY: First-Rate Relief
A combination of the anti-inflammatory essential oils German chamomile and high-Alpine lavender is considered one of the best therapies for soothing dermatitis, says Barbara Close, an aromatherapist and herbalist in East Hampton, New York. |
He recommends taking 1 tablespoon of a tincture of both herbs three times a day until the boil is gone. "But beware the taste," he cautions. "It's very bitter."
TURMERIC: Cooling the Fire
In Ayurveda, the ancient natural healing system from India, boils are seen as a "pitta" disorder—an excess of fire or heat. Turmeric is a cooling herb that can reduce the inflammation of a boil and help prevent recurrences, says Virender Sodhi, M.D. (Ayurved), N.D., an Ayurvedic and naturopathic physician and director of the American School of Ayurvedic Sciences in Bellevue, Washington. |
All of these herbs are good for canker sores," says Dr. Yates.
FUN: Take It Twice a Day
One of the best ways to protect yourself against canker sores is to reduce stress, says James Hardy, D.M.D., a holistic dentist in Winter Park, Florida. He recommends that you identify activities that you love, such as riding a bike, listening to music, making love, praying, exercising, playing with the kids, or taking a bubble bath, and be sure to do one or more of them once or twice a day, every day. |
Alternative practitioners, however, say that a variety of nutrients, herbs, and other remedies can rev up your virus-fighting immune system, shorten your cold (to as little as 2 to 3 days), and mute the symptoms. Many of these same treatments can help prevent colds as well.
Here is a complete cold-crushing program from Kenneth A. Bock, M.D., codirector of the Rhinebeck Health Center in Rhinebeck, New York, and the Center for Progressive Medicine in Albany, New York.
"I don't put any of my patients on all of these remedies because it's too costly and there are too many pills," he says. |

Instead, ask for seasonings made with herbs, spices, dry white wine, lemon juice, mushrooms, tomatoes, green pepper, onions, and garlic. Broiling, steaming, and baking are the cooking methods of choice.
As for dessert, think fruit. Better yet, before ordering any dessert, stop and ask yourself if you're still hungry. If the answer is no, just stop. You might like that piece of fruit a little later at home.
Count Your Blessings
Finally, count your blessings, not calories, grams of fat, numbers of vitamins, even phytochemical content. |
That's why herbs and spices are highlighted in our recipes even though present in small amounts.
Eat less, but perhaps more frequently. Humans started off as gatherers, grazing among the plants of the earth, nibbling a little from this fruit, a little from that vegetable. Perhaps it's time to return to that kind of sampling variety. While we would never wish to return to an era of depending for survival on what we can find, we would do well to copy that formula of eating small quantities of a great variety of foods.
Enjoy all things in moderation. |

And they work equally well in light summer fare when mixed with fresh greens and raw vegetables and herbs, as in lentils with arugula and watercress, cooked kidney beans with fresh green beans, black-eyed peas with carrots and celery.
Mashed-legume dips and spreads can replace cream cheese or sour cream. They work on sandwiches and are tasty side dishes. Kathie Swift suggests that many people who claim to dislike beans actually dislike their texture rather than their flavor; for these people, dips and spreads are the perfect way to get the power of beans. |

Because you use all your senses in the process: feeling the earth, smelling the fruits and plants, tasting sprigs of herbs. And your brain's planning and spatial abilities are called into action as you decide which plants to put where, the direction of the sun, and how much water is needed. At the end there are potent rewards: fresh, homegrown fruits and vegetables, flowers, or a beautiful yard.
