Many dried herbs are excellent sources, but are not often used in sufficient quantity to make much contribution to the diet. Ground spices can do so, though—e.g. 1 teaspoon of ground ginger gives nearly 1 mg of iron, and curry powder slightly more.

In Japan it is one of the seven herbs of spring, traditionally cooked with rice and other wild plants.
The pungent seeds can be employed as a spice.
The leaves contain tannins, organic acids, an alkaloid (bursin), minerals and various substances (such as flavonoids and acetylcholine).
The whole plant is hemostatic, tonic and diuretic. It is preferable to use it fresh. The juice expressed from it can be employed medicinally.

Local species are eaten as pot herbs in Asia.
Primula (D-H 4) Primrose
From the Latin "primulus," very first (diminutive form of "primus," first): the plant blooms in early spring.
Both native (N. N.Am. & Mountains) and species introduced from Eur. Many primroses from Eur. and Asia, as well as garden hybrids, are cultivated for ornament. Among the European species, P. verts (= P. officinalis) is found as an escape in N.E. N.Am.
The leaves of/? verts (m.a.) are edible raw in salads. They have a pleasant, somewhat spicy taste, with a slight anise smell, and can also be eaten cooked. |
Apiaceae (Ujmbeeeiferae)
To this important family belong many of our common vegetables, herbs and spices: carrot, parsnip, celery, parsley, chervil, fennel, dill, coriander, caraway, cumin and angelica, among others.
On the other hand, extremely toxic plants are found here as well, such as poison hemlock, fool's parsley and water hemlock.
It is easy in most cases to determine whether a plant is a member of the Api-aceae but it is generally much more difficult to identify with any certainty a species, or even a genus within the family. |
Fresh basil is one of the finest herbs to add to salads, vegetable dishes and soups. It goes especially well with tomatoes. The plant occasionally escapes, but it does not persist.
Basil contains an essential oil, which is distilled and used as a flavoring in some countries.
It is tonic, stomachic, catminative, antispasmodic and galactagogue.
The seeds have reportedly been used as food.
Basil has been known in Europe since ancient Rome.
Several other species are used as condiments in various parts of the Tropics. |
Falafel," a traditional Middle Eastern food, is a mixture of bulgur, fava-bcan flour, garlic and herbs, which is made into balls that are deep-fried. "Hishk" is made in the same regions from fermented bulgur. In the Far East, cooked wheat is mixed with steamed soybeans for making "miso" and "shoyu" (see Glycine max, Fabaceae).
Coarsely ground flour is cooked into gruel. |
Of course, fruits can be dried or frozen, acorns and nuts can be stored, and wild herbs and teas are often dried. But berries and nuts in season are also the principal foods of various wild animals, including birds. Do not forget to leave enough for them.
It is generally better to gather plants in cotton bags than in plastic bags, especially in warm weather. Never leave fresh plants unrefrigerated for too long, as they will soon spoil. They will keep in the refrigerator for a few days if wrapped in wet towels and stored in plastic bags. |

Those of you hoping to give your memory a boost and hone your mental edge are better off following the 10-step program. and herbs. If after three months you feel as if you need an additional boost, consider adding one of the specialized agents discussed in this chapter. On the other hand, if your memory and cognitive complaints are more pressing, I recommend adding one or more of the nootropics right away. If you are caring for someone with severe memory loss or Alzheimer's disease, you should start that person on a comprehensive program that encompasses all ten steps, including nootropics. |

It is also important to address any food allergies by working with a complementary physician, a doctor trained in nondrug approaches to healing, as well as in traditional medicine. An antiallergy diet can often correct or ameliorate the problem by having the patient eliminate certain foods completely, and eat others on a rotational basis. |

Ancestral herbs jF/ow old are herbal remedies?
"Older than man," says James A. Duke, Ph.D., an herbalist and ethnobotanist in Fulton, Maryland, and author of The Green Pharmacy. Zoologists have identified as many as eight species of primates that use plants for medicinal purposes, he says.
Evidence suggests that humans figured out herbal medicine pretty quickly, though. |

Duke, PhD, one of the world's foremost authorities on medicinal plants and herbs, writes that about one percent of new TB cases in New York City are caused by bacteria resistant to one antibiotic. Up to seven percent of recurrent cases are resistant to two or more antibiotics. TB patients resistant to multiple antibiotics have only a 50 percent chance of surviving. 4
"The Chinese use garlic to treat TB with decent results," writes Dr. Duke. |

They can also be used in combination with other herbs and nutrients, such as Ginkgo biloba.
High doses of ginseng may cause insomnia, elevated blood pressure, jitteriness, and heart palpitations. It should not be taken by people with hypertension, diabetes, or hypoglycemia without first consulting a doctor. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult a physician before using ginseng. Be aware that much of the ginseng on the market is derived from the lowest grade root that has been diluted, adulterated, or is totally void of active constituents. |
Although these herbs are safe, effective therapies for enhancing memory in healthy individuals and improving cognitive function in those with memory loss, the medical establishment tends to ignore them. Please do not mistake their indifference for an herb's lack of efficacy or scientific backing. It is simply a typical response in the conventional medicine arena.
Now it's on to Step 4 of the program. There we will discuss the fats that nurture the brain.

Today, ginkgo is commonly used in Europe, where physicians write prescriptions for herbs and insurance companies pay for them. In fact, over 10 million prescriptions are written throughout the world for ginkgo each year for the treatment of circulatory disorders, depression, memory loss, and other signs of cognitive decline.
Extracts from the leaves of this tree contain phytochemicals called ginkgo flavone glycosides and terpene lactones, which give ginkgo its remarkable medicinal value. |
And some herbs, such as Ginkgo biloba, ginseng, Huper-zine A, and vinpocetine, have been clinically proven to preserve and restore memory. Let's take a closer look at these herbal brain boosters.
Ginkgo biloba
If I could recommend only one herbal supplement for optimizing brain function, it would be Ginkgo biloba. The ginkgo tree, dating back over 200 million years, is one of the oldest living plant species on the planet. Extremely hardy, ginkgo trees are resistant to insects, pollution, and disease. Their leaves have been used for various medicinal purposes for centuries. |

Get more fiber. Fiber softens the bowel contents and seems to help if bloating is caused by intestinal spasms. You can add fiber to your diet by eating vegetables and whole grains, says Roger Gebhard, M.D., gastroenterologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and professor of medicine at the Univeristy of Minnesota in Minneapolis. But wheat starch may cause bloating, he adds, so try switching to rice and potatoes, which contain starch that is more easily tolerated. Or try a tablespoon of Metamucil mixed into juice once a day. |

Lots of herbal remedies call for a tea made from several different herbs. Make the blend first with the dried herb, says Mary Bove, N.D., a naturopathic physician at the Brattleboro Naturopathic Clinic in Vermont and a member of Britain's National Institute of Medical Herbalists. For example, if a flu remedy calls for a cup of tea with equal parts of linden flowers, elder flowers, yarrow flowers, and peppermint leaves, don't make /4 cup of each and pour the four teas together. |

Ranges of Detoxification
Moving to a less congesting diet, as shown in the facing table, will also induce healing.
The effects of dietary detoxification vary. Even mild changes from our current eating plan will produce some responses, while more dramatic dietary shifts can produce a profound cleansing. |

By using dried herbs and steeping them for long periods, I am able to extract many nutrients (especially minerals) and medicinal factors (such as phytosterols, glycosides, and starches) which extract poorly, or not at all, into teas and tinctures. Because these nourishing and tonifying infusions are protein-rich, they do not store well. Most spoil in a day or two, even if refrigerated. I drink a different infusion each day. The usual dose is 1-4 cups. |

How To Make Infused Herbal Oils/Ointments
Oil is used to extract plant components that affect the skin, underlying nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics, fat cells, muscles, and other soft tissues. Infused herbal oils are always made from fresh plants, with the exception of calendula flowers and comfrey leaves, which are often dried for a day or two before being placed in oil. |
Liver-protective herbs help reduce or eliminate nausea associated with chemotherapy (and radiation). See pages 228-229.
