Porcini are traditionally used to flavot sauces, stews, and rice dishes, but are also good sauteed for a pasra topping or grilled with olive oil and herbs. They are not generally used raw. The dried variety can be rehydrated by soaking in watm water for fifteen to thirty minutes; rinse to temove any remaining dirt or grit. In the folk medicine of Bohemia and Bavaria, this mushroom is credited with cancer prevention, and this folk wisdom is supported by studies at Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer. |
Use them thinly sliced and sauteed in butter with herbs; they may also be baked, grilled, or added ro casseroles or soups. Rehydrate dried maitake in water for at least thirty minutes, or until softened. The polysaccharide in maitake-—Beta 1, 6-Glucan—is unique to this mushroom and is a potent immuno-stimulant, apparently helping to neutralize tumors and to ameliorate cancer, AIDS, chronic fatigue, and problems of obesity. It lowers blood pressure and benefits diabetes sufferers by lowering blood glucose. Historically, maitake were valued for promoting longevity and maintaining health. |
Herbs, Spices, and Other Foods section); Sicilian fennel (F. vulgaris azoricum) is grown in southern Italy for its tender young stems, which are eaten like celery or asparagus; Florence fennel or finocchio (F. vulgaris dulce) is cultivated for its very thick basal leaf stalks. The plant resembles a plump celery plant, except that its leaves are finer and more feathery, like dill; its three swollen leaf bases overlap to form a sort of false bulb. If you attempt to grow the bulb fennel in your garden, it quickly turns into the herb fennel. |

You'll receive an e-mail notice when the book is ready to be published, and you'll you will be able to download the book and educate yourself about the most powerful herbs, vitamins, minerals, and health food products that the research strongly shows exhibit antiviral effects. How powerful are the effects? So powerful that many of these substances outperform antiviral prescription drugs promoted by the drug companies themselves.

It doesn't mean I won't catch the virus, nor that I won't spend several days in bed overcoming it, but when a strong immune system is combined with selected vitamins and herbs, as well as plenty of sleep and a lack of stress, the human body is capable of overcoming practically any disease. Even H5N1.
Stick around, and I'll demonstrate it personally. |

In Germany, which makes extensive use of pharmaceutical-grade herbs, chamomile is regarded as the first choice for treating mild skin problems, such as rashes, in infants. A human study of nine healthy women found that topically applied chamomile was absorbed deeply into the skin. Not surprisingly, then, many cosmetics (such as the Camo-Care brand) use chamomile.
The active components of chamomile include blue azulene (an essential oil), glycosides (carbohydrate-based compounds found in many medicinal plants), and many acids and esters. It is also rich in antioxidants. |

The Anti-Inflammation Syndrome Step 5: Use Spices and herbs to Flavor Foods
For many people salt (sodium chloride) and black pepper are the usual flavor enhancers sprinkled onto foods. The Paleolithic diet contained large amounts of potassium and small amounts of naturally occurring sodium. With large amounts of salt added during the manufacture of food products (once again, carefully read package labels) and still more at the table, today's diets typically contain far more sodium than potassium. Excess intake of sodium can raise blood pressure and interfere with the body's use of calcium. |
Like other herbs, it is sold in the United States and other countries without a specific therapeutic claim.
Its active ingredient, parthenolide, stabilizes blood vessel tension. Although it is of limited use during an actual migraine headache, the herb's long-term use does reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. Dosages of feverfew products vary among brands, but one of the most reliable brands (available at health food stores) is MygraFew, made by Nature's Way. |

A Brief but Fascinating History
So where does Rhodiola rosea fit into the picture? Although this plucky herb remains relatively unknown in the West, in folk medicine it has a legendary history dating back thousands of years. We know, for example, that the ancient Greeks used Rhodiola rosea. In 77 A.D. |
Until very recently, much of this research took place in western Europe—particularly in Germany, where a unique regulatory system evaluates the safety and indications of herbs sold in pharmacies, approving about 200 of them as nonprescription medicines. Other countries involved in extensive herbal research include China, Japan, India, and Russia. Very few of the studies from Russia and the former Soviet Union had been available in the West because they had not been translated into English, the predominant international language of science and medicine. |
At least three modern, well-designed, controlled clinical trials on the adaptogenic properties of Rhodiola rosea have been published in Pby-tomedicine, a leading English-language journal on the science of herbs and medicinal plants. The results of these trials strongly support the safety and efficacy of Rhodiola rosea. Unfortunately, such trials need to appear in leading medical journals before the conventional medical community will take notice of the potential applications of Rhodiola rosea in modern clinical practice. |
Publication in major medical journals also could increase media coverage of herbs like Rhodiola rosea and thus promote their inclusion in a rational regimen of dietary supplementation for millions of consumers who are looking for ways to increase energy, reduce stress, and optimize their well-being. |
That is, I would prefer to see much more research on most herbs. But with regard to Rhodiola rosea, the published studies so far show the herb to be useful for physical and mental performance under stress, energy enhancement, heart health, immune defense, hormone balance, and weight loss.
Finally, Rhodiola rosea is agriculturally sustainable. |
The term adaptogen is highly appropriate to describe the actions of a group of herbs for which we in the West have few other words, except perhaps the less adequate tonic. Adaptogen was coined in the late 1940s by Soviet pharmacologists who were studying the actions of the legendary Asian ginseng root (Panax ginseng). |

Mother Nature Knows No Mercy
There is no thought or discrimination in the working of the Eternal Laws that govern all things. Evenly, ruthlessly, eternally, Mother Nature works according to fixed laws for good or for ill. . . thinking as little of us creatures that build and die on this earth as the boy at play thinks of the ant hill beneath his foot. |

The "Part" as a Unit of Measurement
European herbalists use the metric system of measurement, and so milliliters (ml) and grams (g) are the units used in dispensing herbs. The North American use of drops or dropperfuls is both confusing and quantitatively inaccurate. The size of a drop is variable, as it depends on the size of the hole in the dropper and other factors.
The prescriptions presented in this book have been developed using the concept of measurement known as the part. Using parts allows for great flexibility in creating formulations. |

HQ Crude Drug and Extract
In years past, SJW was mainly gathered in the wild, but now most of this herb is obtained by controlled cultivation (in Germany, Poland, and South America). herbs for medicinal use should be gathered when the flowers start to open. The harvested material should be dried rapidly but carefully to preserve the content of the secretory glands. The drying temperature should not exceed 30-40°C. The key constituents of SJW (see Sect. 2.2.4 |
Besides these species-specific components, the dried herbs and extracts also contain significant amounts of some very common plant constituents such as flavonoid derivatives (e. g., rutin and hyperoside),xanthone derivatives, biflavones (e.g. amentoflavon), procyanidines, and a volatile oil (Nahrstedt and Butterweck, 1997). The herb contains no more than about 1 % of the volatile oil, which is isolated by steam distillation. Hypericum oil is made by macerating the ground fresh flowers of SJW in olive oil (25:100 ratio). |

In Germany the following herbs are offered singly or in mixtures as nonmedicinal teas: apple peels, blackberry leaves, rose hips, hibiscus flowers, raspberry leaves, life everlasting, mallow leaves, mallow flowers, peppermint leaves, sunflower blossoms, and calendula flowers. Obviously, it is sometimes difficult to draw a strict dividing line between a tea-like product and a medicinal tea. Even the pharmacodynamic action of a product does not provide a differentiating feature. |

All fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, herbs, and fresh meat products are unprocessed foods. These foods are all high in fiber, high in antioxidants, and yet exhibit low caloric density which promotes healthy body weight and reduces the risk of obesity. These foods offer much higher vitamin and mineral content than processed foods, all while avoiding the unhealthy additives, oils and sweeteners found in processed foods.
So, as usual, the so-called health authorities in this country are arguing about the wrong thing. |

I'm outraged by the behavior of the FDA and its campaign to discredit herbs and vitamins while ignoring far more dangerous prescription drugs. I'm outraged by the drug company executives who earn millions of dollars each year peddling dangerous drugs to elderly people who have to choose between food and medicine because they can't afford the sky-high prices of prescription drugs. I'm outraged by the FDA's efforts to monopolize the U.S. drug market, ban drug imports from Canada, and force senior citizens to pay ridiculous prices for deadly drugs. |
