And we believe that individuals should have the right to choose what medicine, herbs, and supplements they wish to take to treat or prevent their own diseases or disorders, or just to stay healthy or enhance their health.
Healers and patients can have a connection. The patient, however, is the only real healer. The doctor or practitioner can only really educate and support the patient's own healing process. These are the beliefs of natural health. These are the beliefs which, frankly, organized medicine doesn't want you to ever adopt. |
All you need is a naturopathic physician, a naturopathic approach to life, herbs, good nutrition, healing foods, natural sunlight, and the list goes on. These are easy things to accomplish. The answers are quite obvious.
Your health freedoms are at stake right now
Returning to the Foods Supplements Directive in Europe, it's really just the tip of the iceberg. The effort to outlaw plant extracts, certain vitamins, and certain minerals is just an extension of the philosophy that nutrition should be criminalized. |
It's basically a way for organized medicine to try to keep up with the times, to say that you can use these herbs only as a minor part of this traditional health procedure. They want to relegate everything that's alternative into the fringes of treatment. Integrative medicine is a joke.
Alternative medicine, or what I call "advanced medicine," is where the real healing power is. That's where you make a choice and say, "I'm not going to follow organized medicine any more. I'm going to get healthy. I'm going to start by taking responsibility for my health outcome. |

I thought, rather than just telling people about the herbs, I'd formulate these products for men and women and make them available. So they're also everywhere -- all the Whole Foods, the Wild Oats, GNC, etc. They all carry the products.
Mike: So any local health food store that carries Enzymatics should have the Hot Plants products. Look for Hot Plants right on the label.
Kilham: Hot Plants for Him or Hot Plants for Her.
Mike: Okay, you'll have to keep that straight, otherwise…
Kilham: Otherwise, they could have a really interesting evening that they weren't expecting! |
People might think turmeric and ginger are just common herbs, but they're also powerful medicines. There's a lot of very excellent work that's been done on a hops-derived extract, which is rich in a group of compounds called humulones. And these show every bit as effective anti-inflammatory activity as 400 mg of Ibuprofen, for 9 hours. So here you've got something with activity comparable to a common anti-inflammatory drug, and Ibuprofen's a damn good anti-inflammatory, but primarily without some of the stomach hazards. I think that those are some of my picks. |
I don't disagree that there are, in fact, hundreds of cancer-inhibiting herbs, but I don't think that's going to be a big, emerging category soon.
Mike: For those who know, there are resources available. There are plants, right?
Kilham: Yes there are. Certainly a lot of people take reishi mushrooms post-chemotherapy, as a matter of course. It's probably the biggest cancer-support herb being used out there. And there are definitely rainforest products as well.
Mike: And then, getting back to the anti-inflammatories, I think you're right on with the Vioxx backlash. |
But I got involved in this industry in the early 70s, started to become familiar with herbs in the kind of vague, not really knowledge-laden way that a lot of people did back then. Over time, I became more informed, more expert in the category, combined a genuine of plant medicine with a love of travel, discovered that I had a facility for doing field work, studied the works of the great ethnobotanists, really learned about the works of some of the true experts in the field, and eventually found that I could do this work well and deliver the goods. |

We're seeing research on herbs like turmeric, now being shown to be a strong anti-cancer herb and something that boosts immune system function. We're learning how cinnamon can control blood sugar levels in diabetics. We're learning about the super healing powers of fruits such as blueberries and raspberries. We're seeing more research on garlic and how garlic can prevent cancer. We're also seeing research on ginseng and how ginseng extracts prevent colds and flus during the flu season. The list goes on and on. |

You can eliminate the vast majority of prostate cancer in this country by getting people to take in a healthy dose of sunlight and giving them basic nutritional supplements like cod liver oil, zinc and selected herbs.
So out of the long list of things that we could be doing to enhance public health, to eliminate chronic disease and to improve nutrition, the only thing that these doctors can come up with in terms of a suggestion is to test the whole country for AIDS. |

So we're not doing basic drug research, and we don't even have, for example, articles on single herbs. I'm not very interested in that -- I'm more interested in integrated care protocols, where we look at everything that can be used.
Mike: So that leads me to I think an important question for readers, which is -- how does a patient assemble a team of integrative care providers?
Dr. Pizzorno: Boy, that's a real challenge, because there are some clinics around where you have practitioners working together, and that's certainly a good start, but most people don't have that ability. |

I always try first to do it with diet and nutrition, and then use the herbs.
Mike: That's interesting. Do you find that patients are able to integrate the diet and nutritional advice?
Dr. Pizzorno: Well, not everybody's willing to do that, but I admit, I see a skewed population. And that is, if people come to see me, and come to see naturopathic doctors, in general they know what to expect -- they know they're not just going to get a pill. They know they're going to have to change their lives, so people who come to see us seem to be more willing to make the changes. |

I refer especially to the exciting new research in "smart drugs"—vitamins, herbs, amino acids, and various chemical compounds which some researchers claim can increase memory and intelligence.
Stimulated by the right memes, human beings will emit intelligence-building neurochemicals even without the intervention of smart drugs. Through this self-reinforcing feedback loop, the brain guides its own physical evolution over time. Still there is nothing wrong with giving evolution a jump start now and then, and that is what smart drugs are all about. |

This implication may help explain why aromatherapy and other natural remedies such as herbs work. When the distiller extracts the "essential" oils from a plant, he or she may be extracting the "essential systemic memories" that reflect the wholeness of the plants themselves in addition to the unique combination of physical components that comprise the individual plants. If chemicals have memory, as systemic memory predicts, then chemists will need to study psychology too, and vice versa. |

But this is probably an oversimplification, since herbs typically work with an assortment of chemical compounds, not just one chemical.
In terms of its overall appetite-suppressing potential, hoodia is just one of many products coming down the line. I suspect that the much-hyped PYY3-36 nasal spray, produced by a company called NasTech, might offer another realistic appetite suppressant solution. But that product is only in trials right now, and it won't even be available on the market for several years. |

Of course, once again, people in the know aren't going to be concerned about that because they'll be stocking up on elderberry extract and boosting their immune systems by taking herbs like astragalus, aloe vera, St. John's Wort, lemon balm herb and many others that have powerful antiviral properties.
My impression of the statements from governments around the world on bird flu is that they are basically designed to calm people down and are largely false statements. I fail to see how any country can be stocking up on a vaccine that doesn't even exist. |

So even though these countries are stockpiling Tamiflu, people would actually be far better protected by acquiring potent antiviral herbs, minerals and supplements as a protection against the bird flu virus.
But knowing the way most people think, few will actually prepare for this. And frankly, they might get away with it. There is a real possibility that the bird flu virus could be a bust. Maybe it will never become a pandemic. |

Because far too many users of herbs, nutritional supplements and other complementary or alternative health solutions view those solutions in the same way they view conventional medicine. That is, they are asking for an herb to cure their symptom. If they have pain, they want a pill that will eliminate the pain, and the only difference in this example between patients who turn to conventional medicine and patients who turn to natural medicine is that the natural patient wants a pain pill from a plant. |
For others, it's herbs. But it's all the same distorted view on where healing really comes from.
That's the bottom line truth of what most patients are asking for. And that is the common flaw in conventional medicine versus complementary medicine. Because if you look at them both from the perspective of a victimized patient who is not willing to take control over their health outcome, then neither system of medicine is going to solve a person's health problem in the long run. |

If you haven't been taking care of your health, you are far more susceptible to infection, even with the help of antiviral herbs, nutritional supplements and foods.
Your immune system is the best defense
Do you want to know the big strategy, the big picture? BE HEALTHY. If there were ever a reason to transform your health, letting go of those old, unhealthy habits and doing something positive for the future of your own health, this is as good a reason as you will find. This is a great reason! |

Don't wait around for organized medicine to catch up
Ten years from now, it's going to be a very different landscape, and a lot of people want to wait around for the evidence to actually come out and prove every single thing about food, herbs, and nature before they're going to do it. Well, that's fine for them, but it's going to take ten years or longer for that information to come out.
The good news is that you don't have to wait. You can trust in nature and your body's innate healing ability right now. |

SATURATION POINT
"Information is the commodity of kings." —Anthony Robbins
We live in an era where all knowledge is available to all those who seek it out.
There is an abundance of useful information out there in the world. We are at the source. We can choose. We may tune into any frequency we like. We can learn anything we desire.
Learning is never what one expects. Every step of learning is a new task. Learning is an unending quest. |

SPINACH LASAGNA
1 box flat lasagna sheets (egg-free) 1 cup ricotta cheese (about 250 g) 2 bunches spinach lh bunch celery 5 tomatoes
Mary-Ann's Organic Seasoning Salt or Herb Salt with freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of nutmeg 2 teaspoons oregano
Prepare the lasagna sheets according to the instructions on the packet. Steam the spinach lightly and chop finely. |
For a more tasty option, place the chicken or fish in a casserole dish with mushrooms, celery, red pepper, or any vegetable of your choice, adding herbal salt and a selection of herbs and bake in a hot oven until done.
Lunch and dinner may be switched, but remember not to have either starch or protein more than once a day. In other words, if you have a potato for lunch, you should not have rice for supper, and if you had nuts for lunch you should not have fish for supper. Try not to eat after 8 p.m. but if you need to snack after supper, any raw vegetable is suitable. |
It is vital that you eat plenty of red (such as beets, tomatoes, or strawberries), green (barley grass or wheat grass juice, spinach, herbs such as rocket and basil), and orange fruit and vegetables daily as these provide essential antioxidants that prevent your skin from becoming over-exposed to pollutants in the air. Barley grass is the most nutritious of these foods and does not contain oxalic acid like spinach does. Oxalic acid prevents you from efficiently using the iron and calcium in spinach. |

Using Anticoagulant herbs and Vitamins
There are many herbs and vitamins that can help the body clear away fibrin products and help the coagulation system. Nictotinic acid has been shown to lower Lipoprotein (a) values, which can help in a hypercoagulable state. Enzyme therapies such as bromelain (from pineapples) and mixed digestive enzymes can aid the body in removing fibrin products. herbs such as gingko biloba have also been effective. Vitamins, such as Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Vitamin A and Vitamin E can help reverse coagulation disorders. |

Cayenne, Ginseng, Alfalfa, Licorice root or Goldenseal. Nevertheless, there have been individual physicians who, once having learned of this plant's powers, have made it a major item in their materia medica. Speaking of typhoid pneumonia and typhus fever, one 19th century physician wrote, "I am compelled to say that I consider the tincture of Prickly Ash berries superior to any other form of medication." (22, p. 127). |

In two hundred year;, the price of both sugar and honey declined dramatically. |
The early English silver or other metal teapot was known as a kettle, and the tea was mixed with sugar and, perhaps, other herbs and "brewed up" in the kettle. This practice is followed in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia to this day.
Before about 1720 no factory in Europe would have been capable of making a ceramic pot that could withstand boiling or even very hot water, but some entrepreneur, observing the beautiful shape of the Chinese wine flask, suggested that it should be copied and sold in Europe as a teapot. The pot, therefore, is in effect a foreign invention, not used in China. |
