The more they can convince people that herbs or vitamins are useless, the more drugs they can sell.
FDA says, "We warned ya!"
An FDA panel has voted, with a slim margin, to require "black box warnings" on ADHD drugs following the deaths of hundreds of people who were taking them. If these drugs had been a Chinese herb, of course, the FDA would right now be issuing a nationwide ban and confiscating millions of dollars in inventory at health food stores all around the country. |

Healthy habits
Here are some tips to keep you healthy and save you trips to the doctor this winter.
Get a flu shot. Unless you are allergic to eggs, you should get a flu shot if you are over 50 or have a chronic condition. Because viruses are constantly changing, you must get a flu shot every year. For best results, be well-rested and relaxed. If you're under stress, your body won't respond properly to the vaccine. |

And they're legally allowed to give YOU medical advice while a healthy, unlicensed naturopath gets thrown in jail for advising you to eat healing foods and herbs! That's the state of organized medicine today: the most diseased people are still in charge and are the only ones allowed to practice medicine by law.)
You may also find other traditionally educated doctors who are in a high state of health, and when you do find those doctors, you will discover that they tend to explore way beyond what they've been taught in medical school. |

If an herb killed 60,000 Americans, the FDA would be screaming about how we have to regulate all herbs to "protect the people!" If a virus killed 60,000 Americans, we'd call it one of the worst outbreaks since the 1918 bird flu outbreak.
But when a prescription drug kills 60,000 people, the FDA is all but silent. The CEO of a drug company warns us not to "overreact." The newspaper headlines dedicate their space to the Michael Jackson trial. The politicians argue about whether cell phones should be banned on the road. And, don't forget, the Superbowl is coming, too! |

How would the practice of medicine change if such a theory predicted that sensory and perceptual information was continuously stored in all biological tissues, including the heart and lungs, or that natural medicines such as herbs and aromatherapy could sometimes be superior to synthetic drugs because of the systemic information and energy stored in the molecules? How would the practice of our religious institutions and rituals change if such a theory predicted that personal information historically termed "spiritual" was stored in the personal effects of our loved ones? |

There seems to be an implied arrangement in the minds of regulators (like the FDA) that only alternative therapies have to be proven, only herbs have to actually work in order to be sold. But everything else -- prescription drugs, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical procedures -- doesn't have to work at all. Even if they do not work, the patients must still pay for them and when those procedures fail to produce the promised result, the patients are never owed refunds. |

People who really know herbs and natural products can only laugh at a product like this. Want a real shampoo? Buy Olive Oil Shampoo from Heritage Products, available at most natural health stores.
The bottom line to all of this, though, is that every week, it seems like we see a new announcement about some toxic chemical found in personal care products that is related to either cancer or neurological disorders. |

That's not even the most alarming part of this study; here are more results that are actually even more shocking. There is additionally an herbal-medicine program that focuses on immune boosters and medicines for AIDS-related ailments; herbal production gardens at Kufunda and in local villages produce the herbs, and a small lab processes and packages them. In 2006 the scope of the lab will expand into growing and distributing the Moringa oleifeira plant (packed with vitamins, minerals, eighteen amino acids, chlorophyll, omega-3 oils, phytonutrients, and antioxidants) and the Artemisia annua plant, which is used to treat malaria (a leading killer in the Global South) and boosts the immune system. |

When the FDA is attacking herbs and nutritional supplements, they will claim there's not enough evidence to prove they are safe. But when it comes to prescription drugs, the agency says there's not enough evidence to prove they're dangerous. All drugs approved by the FDA, it seems, are deemed safe until proven deadly. And even when proven deadly, they apparently aren't deadly enough to warrant banning them.

Although herbs like St. John's wort have been used for centuries and appear to be safe, they are perhaps best used short-term, for up to a year, in combination with other natural alternatives. With the tendency to become dependent on pills in our culture, we need to be careful not to do the same thing with herbs that we have done with prescription medication, relying on them indefinitely. Nor should one rely on herbs exclusively, since, like synthetic drugs, they are not cures but merely suppress symptoms.

The growing alternative-medicine movement, with its reliance on herbs and vitamins, appealed to a generation concerned with what was natural. The movie version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest rekindled old suspicions about psychiatric medications, one of the industry's most profitable monopolies. News stories about abuse of Valium, one of the most profitable postwar drugs, led to its reclassification as a controlled substance in 1978, making it harder to prescribe. |

Public health measures were ineffective because the source of the plague was not understood—strewing herbs and murdering Jews did nothing to improve the situation. Faith in a merciful Christian god eroded, and the collective psychology of the survivors swooned into morbidity and depression. The art of the period, with its cavorting skeletons and corpses, reflects this.
The plague of 1347-51 had been preceded by a general European famine that began around 1315, when the climate of Western Europe wobbled and produced a series of late springtimes and cool, wet summers. |

Fresh herbs and spices can bring more taste pleasure to meals, thus reducing the desire to get taste pleasure from servings of fat and sugar. Many condiments contain significant health-promoting properties in and of themselves. Great choices for flavor enhancement include garlic, onions, scallions, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, basil, ci-lantro, parsley, oregano, and cloves. Salt is fine in moderation, as long as it does not provoke fluid retention. Avoid MSG and aspartame.

Anyway, one of the things that we're seeing in the real niche study of immune system modulation is that foods and herbs that we want to modulate the immune system are like reishi mushroom in that they modulate the immune system up and down as needed.
Mike: That's right, it's adaptogenic.
Wolfe: That is possibly what confused this doctor. He probably thought, because garlic is an immune system upper, you know, it kills everything off. Echinacea kills everything off, and to doctors that's confusing. |

We should all be skeptics of people who are trying to sell us products, especially if it's drugs or herbs or vitamins, because anything can have an element of hype or exaggeration to it. Just because someone is offering something that seems to be a natural vitamin or mineral supplement doesn't mean it's not being over-hyped.
In fact, there are many hucksters and con artists in the nutritional supplement industry, just as there are in the pharmaceutical industry. So, my position has never been that all nutritional supplements are good and that all pharmaceuticals are bad. |
