Mike: There are all sorts of clever ways people can do studies to discredit herbs or supplements. They can use synthetic vitamin E, they can disqualify anyone who is healthy, or they can do tests on people who are about to die. These are all things that have happened.
Barron: Yes. Many things are done to discredit alternative health. There's one other big thing that I think is worth mentioning. Invariably, alternative health works best when people do it as part of a protocol. Rarely are people told to just take one herb, like echinacea. |

The use of herbs in this way reaffirms the principle that each food has its own energy essence. Western nutrition's singular focus on classifying foods as simply carbohydrate, protein, and fat increases our sense of separation from food and our disharmony with Nature.
Summary, Chapter 24
1. The tridosha system offers a harmonious diet for spiritual life by helping us identify our constitutional dosha mixture of kapha, pitta, and vata.
2. Nutrition is concerned with the dynamic interaction of the forces of the foods with the dynamic forces of our own bodies.

DRY HAIR
DIAGNOSIS
Dry hair can mean many different things. Hair can be fine and limp but dry, or coarse and curly but dry. It can even be oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Dry, brittle hair is often a sign that your diet is deficient in essential fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fats are vital for locking moisture into skin and hair cells to keep them supple. Good sources of essential fats include oily fish, such as salmon or mackerel, avocados, and nuts. Dry hair can also be caused by a lack of iron or zinc in the diet. |
COLIC
DIAGNOSIS
Colic is a common condition in babies, affecting around one in five newborns. It is characterized by a gripping pain in the abdomen, thought to be caused by trapped gas or intestinal spasms. It affects both breast- and bottle-fed babies. The baby becomes very uncomfortable and will cry continually unless rocked, walked, carried in a baby sling, or otherwise comforted. Symptoms may occur at roughly the same time every day. Some babies feel comforted when wrapped in a blanket or held tightly. Gently massaging the baby's tummy also helps in some cases. |
Suggestions for techniques that can help to prevent tennis elbow from occurring include bracing and strapping, modifying equipment, taking extended rests, and even learning new routines for repetitive activities.
Warm up: A thorough and correct warm up will help to prepare the muscles and tendons for any activity to come. Without a proper warm up the muscles and tendons will be tight and stiff. There will be limited blood flow to the forearm area, which will result in a lack of oxygen and nutrients for the muscles. This is a sure-fire recipe for a muscle or tendon injury. |
Below are some suggestions of other types of therapies that can relieve the pain.
Prolotherapy: With this treatment, a solution of simple compounds (usually dextrose or calcium carbonate) is injected at the point of the injury. This triggers an inflammation response that increases the blood supply and delivers the nutrients necessary to promote the growth of new cells and repair damaged connective tissue. Consult a naturopathic practitioner who practices prolotherapy regarding treatment.
Massage and hydrotherapy: Massage may be helpful in relieving pain and improving range of motion. |
The techniques below can also help you to relieve neck pain.
Hydrotherapy: Relieve neck pain with an ice massage. Freeze water in a plastic cup, remove the ice, and after rubbing your neck with your hand to prime the area,! rub the ice on your neck for 5-15 minutes. (Wear a glove or mitt to protect your hand from the cold.)
Imagery: Picture your neck pain as a ball that has a particular size, shape, color, and texture. It may be as small as a marble or as large as a basketball. Allow the ball to grow larger and larger. As it does, the pain may momentarily increase. |

Tylenol here and there . . . and, of course, your nightly beer or glass of red wine (or two). You're playing a dangerous game with your health—a game that has killed some well-known people. Remember Anna Nicole Smith? Hers is far from the only example where young, generally healthy people—who didn't think that the combination of chemicals they were consuming would hurt them— ended up in the hospital or dead.

This class of plants contains tannins, which, when they contact the inside of the intestines, cause drying and healing. In this way, plants with tannins can lessen the loss of water through the intestines. As well as the astringents listed below, agrimony, tormentil, and silverweed are occasionally used to treat diarrhea.
Carob pod: Add 2 g of this common astringent in powder form to food (such as apple sauce) every two hours. Carob taken in this way can ease the frequency and volume of diarrhea.

In the author's live-food diet approach, he has added certain herbs to maintain the dosha balance throughout the yearly cycles. For example, as a predominant kapha constitution, he uses ginger, cardamom, cayenne, and cumin as kapha dosha balancers, particularly in the winter when heat is needed. Vata people may want to include the energy of cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, ginger, sea salt, cloves, mustard, and licorice in their diets at the appropriate times. Pitta people would do better to avoid spices except for cinnamon, coriander, and dill. |

Chapter 16 presents Western herbal medicine as a separate entity—in part because it lends itself to home care, in part because the herbs it employs are widely available in health food stores, pharmacies, supplement centers, and even some supermarkets. The chapters on homeopathy, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and naturopathy also touch on medicinal herbs, because herbs figure prominently in these alternative healing systems.

By eating a high-ojas diet and increasing digestive fire with herbs such as ginger, cayenne, cinnamon, basil, and Ayurvedic formulas, such as triketu and agnitundi, such digestive disturbance is minimized.
The bigger mistake with live foods is overeating. Cooking food destroys half the protein, 70-80 percent of the nutrients, and close to 100 percent of many of the phytonutrients. Because of this, we only need to eat one-half as much live food to get the same amount of nutrition. Eating one-half as much food creates significantly less digestive stress. |
During this time, cleansing and then regenerative herbs and foods would be given. This kaya kalpa process is described in the biography of the sage Shriman Tapasviji Maharaj, a great ascetic who lived for 185 years. He used this process three times, and experienced what the biographer describes as an amazing regeneration, including the regrowth of new teeth and hair. It was said that when he did this for the first time at the age of slightly more than 100 years, he came out of it looking like a young man in his late twenties. |

Echinacea's actions appear to be due to several classes of chemicals and, although it is one of the most heavily researched herbs, a complete picture of exactly which molecules are responsible for its beneficial effects has yet to emerge. However, several polysaccharides appear to be important, in part, in the activation of the immune system. Because of their long chains, these molecules are difficult to isolate and identify, and in fact are probably better described as mixtures of closely related isomers. |
Understanding Medicinal Plants is not the place to find information about specific herbs for particular medical conditions; many books about that topic are already available. Rather, my goal is to provide a basic knowledge of the concepts and principles needed to understand what kinds of molecules are in a medicinal plant and how they exert their influence on the human body. |
Indeed, we have much to learn about medicinal plants; in some cases whole herbs, as opposed to extracts or purified materials, are better. But is also true that nature contains many, many toxic substances, so we should not label plants and natural, herbal treatments as superior in all cases. Like it or not, virtually everything in the world is a chemical or is composed of chemicals. In fact, the entire point of this book is to help you think about these kinds of issues and use your knowledge effectively. |
If the difference between rational herbalism and paraherbalism interests you, and I hope it does, be certain to see the introduction to his book herbs of Choice for more information (details are given in the suggested reading).
I'd like to briefly emphasize one other concept that should be kept in mind at all times. The art of healing is complex and multifaceted. In any culture, healing practices are part psychological and symbolic, part physiological. |
Some will likely be familiar, and others are not exactly the type of herbs you would plant in your garden or read about in the supermarket checkout aisle. I've tried to choose examples which are diverse in their uses and actions and which illustrate the principles and concepts we have seen in earlier sections. In particular, I want to emphasize the connections between molecular structure and the action of a molecule, so that I leave you with a sense of how one determines the other. |

In the world of herbs, echinacea and astragalus have earned a strong reputation as virus fighters. A wide assortment of foods also help boost immune system function: foods like garlic, ginger and onions. In fact, surviving the next pandemic need not depend on vaccines at all. Healthy individuals can survive the pendemic merely by dramatically boosting immune system function and supplementing with anti-viral herbs as well as powerful antioxidants like astaxanthin. |

The idea here is that these herbs tend to minimize gas and bloating, are slightly heating, and specifically balancing for vata. A little bit of pungent spices such as cayenne can be okay. Blended foods are very helpful, as well as raw nut butters, tahini, and oils such as sesame and other slightly heating oils. Sweet vegetables such as beet and carrot (not the juice, but the whole vegetables) are good. |

Medicinal crops are valuable as sources of fresh and dry herbs, essential oils, botanicals, food supplements, and pharmaceuticals. The main approach to improve the agronomic and quality traits of plants has been through classical genetics and breeding. This approach has been tremendously successful and has yielded a huge number of crop varieties with unique agronomical attributes. However, the implementation of classic genetic methodologies is a relatively slow process and depends on the relatively narrow genetic variability within many crop plants. |

Our society is conditioned for fat, salt, and sugar intake, leading to cravings for junk. herbs can introduce flavor back into the picture, a key topic that helps control cravings.
Avoid completely high sugar cereals, candy, cookies, cake, bakery goods, and foods or beverages sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Also eliminate all MSG and all artificial sweeteners. High salt and high fat junk food should be completely avoided. Avoid ice cream. When you eat something sweet and realize you really do not like it or could have done without, you are making progress. |

She had heard that making certain dietary changes could be beneficial to her health, and that there were natural herbs and supplements that might be helpful as well. But she didn't know much about it and because her condition was so severe, she doubted that such an approach could actually do anything for her. In addition, her healthcare plan did not cover such expenses. Betty came to me only because the price of her medications was increasing to a level she could no longer afford, and her persistent friend had insisted. |
