I knew this guy was a fake and that I'd never see him again. At that moment, it all made sense." She never paid the herbalist the bill for $120,000 and dismissed him from her home.

It's the same thing with herbs, and I don't consider myself an herbalist, although I know probably more than 95 percent of the people who do claim to be. I can probably identify maybe 100 to 200 herbs by their signature characteristic, but the good people who really are the top herbalists can identify over 1,000. For example, think of peppermint tea. If you have two batches of peppermint, and you brew them up and one tastes like dishwater while the other has a really strong peppermint flavor, you don' t have to be an herbalist to say, "That's good peppermint, and that's not. |

Sage Oil—A Memory Booster
In the 17th century, noted herbalist Nicholas Culpepper wrote that the herb sage could "heal" the memory, while, "warming and quickening the senses." Sage has always had that reputation, but no one knew why. Researchers from the Medical Plant Research Centre (MPRC) at the Universities of Newcastle and North Umbria in the U.K. have possibly uncovered sage's ancient secret. An enzyme called acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) breaks down a chemical called acetylcholine that is typically deficient in Alzheimer's patients. According to a 2003 study at MPRC, sage inhibits AChE. |

Flushing the Liver
"Liver flushes are used to stimulate the elimination of wastes from the body, to open and cool the liver, to increase bile flow, and to improve overall liver function," says Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac., herbalist and author of Foundations of Health. Here are his instructions for preparing and administering a liver flush:
1. Squeeze enough fresh lemons or limes to produce 1 cup of juice. Dilute with a small amount of distilled or spring water, if desired, but the more sour, the better it will perform as a liver cleanser. |

ABSCESS
DIAGNOSIS
Abscesses are pus-filled lumps that form when a follicle, pore, or gland becomes infected, or an injury to the skin is neglected. Although they usually occur on the skin, they can occur anywhere on the body and occasionally affect internal organs. They are often found in the mouth and are a common cause of dental pain (see p. 227). |

He quit smoking pot, but three months later when his memory still hadn't shaped up, he consulted a Chinese herbalist. The herb doctor put him on ginseng, stating that it is an effective brain tonic and that it also acts as an antidote to certain types of toxic drugs. After taking ginseng extract for six weeks, the young student happily reported that his memory was better than ever.

Oliver, a medical herbalist of England, wrote: "A lady doctor who had been practicing for many years in a maternity home, and had helped thousands of babies into the world, told us she had always insisted on the prospective mothers taking raspberry leaf tea, and she scorned the idea of ever losing a case. Since we started this campaign we have received scores of letters from grateful parents. One lady told us she was reading the paper only a few minutes before her baby was born. |
So I got the idea to try a Chinese herbalist. He told me to take a teaspoon of buckwheat honey four or five times a day and to stay away from fried foods, bread, coffee, smoking, and alcohol.

Chinese Herbal Formulas for Insomnia
Chinese medicine offers at least six premade herbal formulas (also known as "patent remedies") for restlessness and insomnia, according to acupuncturist and herbalist Lesley Tierra, L.Ac., Dip.Ac. These remedies are available at Chinese pharmacies or by mail order from Chinese herbal suppliers. Dr. Tierra offers the following list of insomnia symptoms matched with the appropriate formula:
Mental agitation. |
Clinical herbalist Terry Wil-lard, founder of the Wild Rose College of Natural Healing, recommends the following seven herbs for people with insomnia: valerian, hops, passionflower, kava, lemon balm, reishi mushrooms, and skullcap.25 Chamomile or St. John's wort may also be helpful. Most of these herbs are available at health food stores or through your health-care practitioner. Although herbs are natural substances, they do contain powerful compounds (one reason they can help you sleep!). Some of the herbs discussed below can cause drowsiness or interfere with medications. |
