Turmeric was also known to ancient Western healers such as the Greek herbalist Dioscorides, who mentioned it in his writings in the first century.
An important dye plant, turmeric produces a brilliant yellow-gold hue that has been used to color foods, paper, wood, cosmetics, and fabrics—even the golden robes worn by Thai Buddhist monks.
International Status
In Europe, turmeric is listed as an approved herb in the German Commission E Monographs, indicated for the treatment of dyspeptic conditions (indigestion). |

So an herbalist would learn the technique or school of thought in herbal medicine specific to his or her culture—for example, Chinese, Native American, African, or East Indian. In these stable ancient cultures, the apprentice was taught by the master, and then became the master and had his or her own apprentice, and so it went generation after generation. They experimented, they made their contributions to the field, they passed on the knowledge and it continued to expand. But the systems didn't mix very much with one another. |

To incorporate the benefits of milk thistle seeds into your daily diet, herbalist Christopher Hobbs suggests making a seasoning salt by soaking milk thistle seeds overnight, draining the water, grinding the seeds into a powder using a coffee grinder, lightly toasting them in the oven, and then mixing them with salt or other spices.1 Milk thistle seeds are high in protein and the essential fatty acid linoleic acid, a healthy fat that can help reduce chronic inflammation, balance the female menstrual cycle, and improve heart health. |

The mayor of Fleurance is the famous natural healer and herbalist Maurice Messegue (see Chapter 3). His goal in life is to make the name of his town synonymous with the greatest natural food in Europe, if not the world. (The incomparable chickens from Fleurance are on the menu—complete with billing—at Maxim's in Paris.) The garlic grown around Fleurance is so rich and juicy it explodes with flavor and juices when sliced open. Messegue- says garlic is a great tonic and healer but dangerous if grown synthetically because toxic chemicals tend to be concentrated in the cloves. |

Dong quai's species name, sinensis, refers to its origin in China. Although closely related to the Western plant angelica (Angelica archangelica), the two plants are not interchangeable. Dong quai and angelica share some similar properties in treating women's problems, but angelica is stronger and intended for shorter-term use. The Chinese occasionally substitute the Western plant lovage (Levisticum officinale) for dong quai. |

He recommends a valerian-hops preparation as a good daytime sedative as it will not interfere with or slow one's reflexive responses. |
The five elements are of particular importance to the Chinese herbalist, because they give rise to the five tastes by which all medicinal plants are evaluated. Fire gives rise to bitterness, earth to sweetness, metal to acridity, water to saltiness, and wood to sourness. Each taste is said to have a particular medicinal action: bitter-tasting herbs drain and dry; sweet herbs tonify and may reduce pain; acrid herbs disperse; salty herbs nourish the kidneys; and sour herbs nourish the yin and have an astringent action, preventing unwanted loss of body fluids or vital energy (qi). |

A story is told by one British herbalist, Mary Thome Quelch, of a man in Liverpool, England consuming an entire pheasant at a holiday celebration and then being rushed to the local hospital soon thereafter suffering from ptomaine poisoning. The physicians on duty were able to save his life, but accredited it more to their patient having consumed a lot of red currant jelly, which had been served as part of the "trimmings" of the meal he ate. Both black and red currant juice are ideal for yeast infection in the mouth (thrush) or vagina (vaginitis). |

Much of what we know about herbs originally came from records of their well-developed use in traditional medicine. An herbalist may be trained specifically in herbal medicine by itself, or may be a health professional such as medical doctor, naturopath, osteopath, homeopath, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner who studied herbal medicine.
Naturopathic medicine—Naturopathic medicine, or naturopathy, is based on a combination of modern medicine and traditional healing philosophies and techniques. |
Practically speaking, in twenty-five years as an herbalist and educator, Katta Purkh heard about this happening no more than a couple of times—and he never came across it himself personally because he selected his sources knowl-edgeably and carefully. Again, reputable sources are the key (and this is true for any product). Such incidents are certainly the exception, not the norm, in the herb industry. |

Kneipp was also a practicing herbalist, and he combined many herbal therapies with the water techniques. Among his most important contributions was the use of such inexpensive herbs as hayflower or oatstraw for detoxification purposes. He experimented with healing procedures for a great many diseases, and was particularly active in helping to heal children. He developed the wet "nightshirt," dipped either in salt water or hayflower water, and this was one of the keystones of his treatment for children's diseases. |

Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are an engorgement of the blood vessels around the rectal lining. They can become irritated, ulcerated, and quite painful. They are caused by blocked flow of blood in the veins of the colon. In pregnancy they are common, because of the pressure on the pelvic floor, which reduces circulation (and thus also causes varicose veins). Cayenne taken internally will stimulate the circulation in the body. |
