Both the herbal treatments were better for IBS symptoms than the placebo, but the individualized CHM was not better than the standard fixed formula.9 This study was well designed and conducted and offers promising results for CHM treatment of IBS, but I would like to see another replication study. In the meantime I won't discourage you from using CHM, but you don't need to pay for an individual practitioner.

DIET TO REDUCE WIND (VATA) Strengthens the Nervous System
I use this diet when a patient experiences any or all of these symptoms: weak digestion, nervousness, fatigue, spasms, dryness, neurasthenia, nerve pain, weight loss, numbness, and tingling.
FAVOR:
General: Foods that are both highly nutritive and easy to digest are key to healing nervous system problems. Favor soups, warm foods, and drinks. Drink spring water, especially with meals. |
In fact, in an editorial in the fall of 1998 pharmacist and TCM physician Dennis Awang stated, "The overwhelming majority of adverse events recorded from herbal treatments has involved adulteration with, or substitution of, toxic plant material from relatively innocuous components. . . . Careful characterization of botanical material, whether being assessed for activity or implicated in adverse health effects, is an absolute prerequisite to authoritative judgement. |
We always administer the herbal treatments as teas or tinctures.)
• Choose three or four strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic herbs to reduce heat and infection, especially those with diuretic properties, such as guduchi stem, phellodendron root, dandelion leaf, yin chen hao (Artemisia capillaris), varuna (Crataeva species), buchu leaf (Barosma betulina), uva ursi leaf (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), and cleavers herb (Galium aparine). This should comprise about 70% of your formula.
• Use herbs that soothe and coat the urinary tract, such as talcum, slippery elm bark, and marshmallow root. |
Common herbal treatments for Inflammation
Anti-inflammatory herbs can be grouped according to the specific organs and tissues they treat most effectively. Following are some common classifications.
• Intestinal Inflammation: Choose from beet root, bromelain, scute root, coptis rhizome, boswellia gum, licorice root, dandelion root, phellodendron bark, sarsa-parilla root, triphala, and turmeric root. To coat and soothe irritation, use slippery elm bark. To flush out inflammation, use rhubarb root for 1 or 2 days. |
Recommended herbal treatments for hair loss:
• I use a base formula of eclipta, shou wu root, raw rehmannia, cooked rehmannia, salvia root, schisandra fruit, dang gui root, mu gua fruit (Chaenomelis lagenaria), chiang huo rhizome (Notopterygium species), and dang shen root (Codonopsis pi-losula), to nourish the hair roots. The dose is 2 grams of concentrated granules twice per day.
• If the patient is hypothyroid or has a tendency toward coldness (Yang deficiency), I add deer antler to the base formula. |

Eliminating toxins: Persistent acne may require herbal treatments to assist the body in eliminating toxins by using blood-purifying and gastrointestinal tract stimulants. Try drinking a cup of tea containing nettles, dandelion root and herb, rosehip, frangula bark, senna leaf, and anise fruit twice daily to assist the body in blood purification. Mix equal ratios of the dry plants and fill a tea ball with the mixture. Let the plants steep in hot water for five minutes before drinking. |
NATUROPATHY
There is barely any research into herbal treatments for vitiligo. This is due to the unknown causes of the disease and its strong hereditary component. However, some general suggestions follow.
Diet: In most traditional medicines, as in herbal medicine, the gut is the root of most skin disorders. Basic nutritional guidelines should be followed. Choose a hypoallergenic diet that eliminates peanuts, dairy, wheat, citrus fruits and juices, eggs, and corn. Reintroduce these foods to your diet one by one every week and note any changes in your skin. |

These years saw an exponential growth of interest in meditation, acupuncture (recently introduced from China as one legacy of then-President Nixon's diplomatic efforts), jogging, herbal treatments, biofeedback, and more. Such treatments were widely seen as gentle, effective therapies, but also as sources of patient empowerment that could ultimately have a transforming effect on the doctor-patient relationship and hence on medicine as a whole. |

PLAN OF THE BOOK
It goes without saying that medicine and the medical model, at the very heart of American culture, will not disappear. But the very act of so imagining allows us to evaluate its role: for the good—and also for the harm—it does in contemporary society.

It is difficult to get the recommended daily amount of zinc (60 mg) from diet alone, but make a point of taking more zinc from your food while trying other herbal treatments for tinnitus. You can also take a 60-120 mg zinc supplement a day.
Supplements: Magnesium deficiency may cause tinnitus, and magnesium supplements (1,000 mg a day) may relieve tinnitus associated with Meniere's disease and protect the ears from damage. A manganese deficiency may be the cause of some cases of Meniere's disease, so if you have been diagnosed with this condition take 5 mg of manganese a day. |

Tarragon has also been used traditionally in herbal treatments for diabetes. When diabetic mice received tarragon as part of their diet for nine days, the animals' desire to overeat and excessive thirst was significantly reduced, plus their loss of needed body weight was lessened— all of which happened without any significant alterations in plasma glucose or insulin concentrations, suggesting that tarragon's beneficial actions occur independently of any improvement in blood sugar control. |

When these herbal treatments are insufficient, supplementing with bile salts is often helpful.
Only a small proportion of the bile salts secreted by the liver leave the body via the stool; the vast majority return to the liver to be re-used. Consequently, continuous supplementation with bile salts could lead to an excessive accumulation, resulting in diarrhea or green stools. Bile-salt supplements should therefore be used intermittently and only with professional supervision.

383 options. Treatment is often advised with plants which are mild diuretics (remove excess water) with the theory that the toxic substance (uric acid) will also be removed through the kidneys.2 It is, however, well known that, with orthodox diuretic therapy and removal of fluid, there is in fact an increase in the level of uric acid and an increase in frequency of attacks of gout. |

The generally accepted plan of treating the eye as an independent and isolated organ should be abandoned ... on account of the influence exerted by remote structures."

Many people take a hunt-and-peck approach to herbal treatments. If you are taking herbs or are seriously considering them, make your decision carefully and seriously. Know what you are dealing with. Please refer to the resource section at the end of the book, where I list several books on herbs that may prove to be helpful. Above all, know that when you choose to start taking an herb or group of herbs, you are actually using drugs. Respect this truth and have the courage to inform your doctor of everything you are taking. |

Nevertheless, herbal treatments are documented as the oldest type of treatment for cancer and have been used with success for thousands of years by indigenous people all around the world.
In recent years, modern science has proven that many herbs do, in fact, have cancer-fighting properties. They have been shown to support the body's immune system, improve blood circulation, strengthen the functioning of major organs, and enhance the efficient elimination of toxins, among other things. They can act very much like a potent drug, as well. |
In today's modern world, there are still people getting well from cancer using these herbal treatments. Finding herbal sources today that use good quality herbs and prepare the herbs optimally is the biggest concern. Since it is difficult to be sure of the efficacy of any particular version of Essiac, it might be best to use it in conjunction with another recovery approach with which Essiac tea is compatible. The only approach I know of that is definitely not compatible with Essiac, is Proto-cel. But for all other alternative cancer approaches, Essiac tea can be of great supportive value. |
