Several of the herbal remedies tested inhibited the Epstein-Barr virus by more than 90 percent. The group also reported for the first time the activities of sixteen new medicinal plants as potential anticancer herbs.60
Many researchers like Abdullaev at the National Institute of Pediatrics in Mexico City make the comment that considering the prevalence of cancer and the fact that it is a leading cause of death, it is important to investigate readily available natural substances from plants, vegetables, herbs, and spices that might be useful in the prevention and treatment of cancer. |

In 1991, "Guidelines for the Assessment of Herbal Remedies" (WHO/TRM/91.4) were developed to assist those countries which were interested in establishing basic legal guidelines but had not yet done so. Experts at the "WHO Collaboration Centre for Traditional Medicine" at the University of Illinois at Chicago collected, compiled and assessed the available literature, completing this process in July 1996; in November of the same year, in Bahrain, their work was published in the form of WHO medicinal plant monographs. |

In a survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates for Prevention magazine, researchers noted that 36% of herb users employ herbal remedies in place of prescription drugs; 31% with prescription drugs; 48% instead of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs; and 30% with OTC drugs (Johnston, 2000). In the Slone Survey (Kaufman et al., 2002) of 2590 participants from about the same period of time, 81 % stated that they used at least one medication (Rx or OTC), 50% took at least one prescription drug, and 7% took five or more drugs simultaneously. |

There can be no debate that herbal remedies such as the Hoxsey therapy and Essiac have, historically, been extremely powerful anti-cancer treatments. In today's modern world, there are still people getting well from cancer using these herbal treatments. Finding herbal sources today that use good quality herbs and prepare the herbs optimally is the biggest concern. Since it is difficult to be sure of the efficacy of any particular version of Essiac, it might be best to use it in conjunction with another recovery approach with which Essiac tea is compatible. |

Before I had the herbal remedies, my menstrual cycles were extremely heavy, I had mood swings, and I was very prone to exhaustion. I was extremely irregular. When I started taking the herbal remedies, the menstrual cycle became very regular again, approximately every thirty days. The flow was more regular, the cramping was easier to deal with. The mood swings disappeared, and I became balanced. My own body told me that this was certainly working for me. The herbs have made a fundamental difference in my life. |

According to the same report, Japanese researchers found poor digestion to be the reason that some people do not respond to herbal remedies.
Pancreas, Liver, and Lymph
After the digestive process in the stomach is completed, food substances are released into the duodenum, where most digestion and absorption takes place. If (and only if) there is sufficient acid in the duodenum, the body releases two other digestive hormones, secretin and cholecystokinin. These hormones stimulate the gallbladder to secrete bile and the pancreas to release its digestive juices. |

Here's some good news: You don't need a green thumb to raise a crop of herbs.

Experts estimate that herbal remedies and Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, have been around for 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptians used fragrant oils in what may have been an early version of aromatherapy, and hydrotherapy was practiced in ancient Greece and Rome. And homeopathy, one of the newest techniques, is more than 200 years old.
Homeopathy, in fact, was as big as allopathy, the type of medicine practiced by conventional doctors, in the early nineteenth century, according to David Edelberg, M.D. |

Homeopathy, dietary changes, and herbal remedies —not antibiotics, antihistamines, or decongestants—will be the initial treatment for such common ailments as sinus and middle ear infections, diarrhea, hay fever, and other allergies. For asthma, we would no longer routinely prescribe inhalers, bronchodilators, and steroids —substances that combat the inflammation and constriction of the bronchi but create dependence and do not significantly alter the course of the illness or address its causes. These have their place, but as last resorts, not as primary treatments. |

In working with patients, healthcare professionals should ask about botanical medicine use when the patient has chronic or relapsing disease, is experiencing or concerned about adverse drug reactions, or there is unexplained poor compliance with treatment or follow-up. Useful questions when inquiring about use of botanical medicine include: "Have you tried other treatments for this problem?" "Have you changed your diet because you thought it might help this problem? |

Our strongest immune responses come between the ages of five and 25—if we are well-nourished, well-rested, not under excess mental or emotional stress or deprivation, and not concurrently infected with an organism, such as the ebv or cmv viruses, which impair the immune system, or a disease process, or medications (including some herbal remedies) that impair the immune system. Cells age, and as we grow older, the immune system is less able to perform. At the same time, when the immune system is immature it is less able to process some antigens.

When it comes to treating serious illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and autoimmune disorders, many medical doctors are prescribing herbal remedies to be used in conjunction with mainstream medical techniques, says Dr. Watson. Herbs such as ginger, peppermint, papaya and fennel can help reduce the nausea caused by chemotherapy, for instance. Irish moss can thin the blood, and hawthorn berry, rosemary and motherwort can improve circulation in people with heart disease. This tradition of herbal remedies continued for centuries, until the beginning of modern science and its knowledge of chemistry. At that point, scientists and doctors could isolate the active ingredient from an herb and produce a more potent, faster-acting medicine. In 1806, a German apprentice pharmacist isolated an active element of the opium plant, a chemical alkaloid that he called morphine. |

Herbs for Children
When giving herbal remedies to children, the dosage should be decreased. As a general rule, the dose should follow the body weight, so that a forty pound child would get no more than half the dose of an eighty pound child. The doses recommended in this book are the adult doses, representing a body weight of about 150 pounds for purposes of calculation. Therefore women weighing less than 150 pounds, for example, should begin with a lower dosage. When treating very young children, only the very mild herbs should be used, such as lemon balm and catnip. |
OBTAINING AND STORING HERBS
In order for herbal remedies to be effective in the recommended doses, the herbs used must contain their full complement of active constituents. The potency of herbs depends on many factors:
1. the species
2. the growing location and climatic conditions
3. the time of harvest
4. the method of drying and preserving
5. the storage conditions
6. the form of the herb
