Many physicians in that country prescribe herbal remedies for their patients with the luxury of knowing their manufacturers must follow strict quality controls.
No Quality Control in America
We have no such standard of quality control with the production of herbal medicines in the United States. Without this control we have absolutely no assurance that the tablet contains what the bottle claims it does. No organization or government agency certifies the accuracy of herb labels. |

When asked whether these products were effective, 4 % said no, 38 % had no opinion, and 54 % were convinced that herbal remedies are effective. Most of the responders believed, however, that natural remedies worked differently from synthetic drugs.
Opinions on product safety were even more revealing: 82 % of those surveyed rated the risk of treatment with natural remedies as "low" while 84 % rated the risks of synthetic drugs as "moderate to high" (Fig. 1.5). This opinion was held about equally by devotees and opponents of natural remedies. |

The herbal remedies in this book can be self-applied, but whenever there is an uncertainty about the nature of the ailment or the efficacy of the cure, a trained professional should be consulted.
Today there are many practicing herbalists and many doctors open to the idea of using natural methods of healing, including herbs. Seek out these individuals in your area and go to them for consultation when this seems appropriate.
Very special care must be taken if strong herbal remedies are used in conjunction with modern pharmaceuticals, as there might be adverse effects of the combinations. |

A Word about Herbal Remedies
It is unclear why herbal remedies are often referred to as "alternative" medicines. When you consider that about 25 percent of all medicines prescribed today were derived from plants or plant products, there is nothing alternative about them. In the 1700s, the plant foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) was used in herbal teas to treat dropsy (heart failure). The active ingredient in foxglove (digitalis) is now given in pure form and is a standard therapy for those who suffer from heart disease. |

They conduct these raids with armed agents with guns drawn. Toxic Metals in Asian Remedies
Reports of unacceptable levels of toxic metals in herbal remedies regularly appear in the literature. One report described arsenic poisoning in Singapore, and other reports attribute lead poisoning to the use of an Asian herbal medicine. Aside from the herbs themselves, potential sources of contamination include lead-releasing brewing pots, grinding weights, and other metal utensils. |

Note that the order of the indications in Table Ai corresponds roughly to the eight chapter headings in this book. Ginkgo preparations are discussed mainly in Chap. 2 (Central Nervous System), and chamomile preparations for external use (pain, rheumatic conditions, bruises) and anti-inflammatory internal use are discussed in Chap. 8 (Skin, Trauma, Rheumatism, and Pain). |

Piperidine Alkaloids
The piperidine alkaloid coniine is the most important alkaloid in poison hemlock (Conium maculatum). This colorless, strongly basic oil has a mild pepper odor and a burning taste and occurs in all parts of the plant. Four other piperidine alkaloids are also found in poison hemlock. Coniine is lethal to all forms of animal life. |

Present-day Europeans use many herbal remedies to treat illnesses such as the common cold. Unfortunately, medicine in the United States has a different approach to herbs. In most medical schools in this country, the herbal remedies of Asian and European societies are simply not taught.
For example, the only medicinal herbs I learned about in medical school were the flowering foxglove plant, which is a source of the heart medication digitalis, and rauwolfia, the source of a medication used to control high blood pressure. |

Chinese Herbs
The Chinese have dozens of tried and true herbal remedies called "patent medicines" that they have used for thousands of years. These are just starting to catch on in the United States. They are available at many health food stores and herb shops. There are two that work well for warding off colds and flus. Ganmaoling tablets are a general cold/flu remedy. If you're starting to get a cough or other symptoms in your lungs, try Sangchu tablets. These herbs work very specifically to balance the body and work best if they are taken alone, without any other medication. |

This class of alkaloids was the model for the development of sympathomimetic drugs. The main representative is l-ephedrine, first found in ma huang (Ephedra sinica). Since ephedrine has other, more prominent activities, its action on the heart is often considered a side effect. Ephedrine and its relatives have been found in plants in the families Portulacaceae, Rutaceae, Cactaceae, Amaryllidaceae, Moraceae, Musaceae, and Rosaceae. |

A Little Goes a Long Way: herbal remedies for Children
Children aren't just little adults — their bodies have different requirements and often don't need the same dosages of medications for effective treatments. This applies to herbal remedies, too. The good thing about herbs is that they are far more gentle than even over-the-counter remedies, but you should still take care to give the right dosage and watch for any side effects. Here are some handy rules for determining herbal dosages for children.
¦ Weight Rule: Divide the child's weight by 150 to determine dosage. |

HERBAL REMEDIES
The following herbal remedies contain plant estrogens that can often relieve acute menopausal symptoms. Even though their estrogen effect is four hundred times weaker than prescription estrogen, they should generally not be used for any conditions for which estrogen is contraindicated, such as estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.
• Take dong quai (up to two 500-milligram capsules two to four times a day) or a dong quai-containing combination herbal formula (see at the end of Chapter Nineteen, "Menopause"). |

Herbal Remedies: Kava and Valerian
In recent years, a number of herbal remedies have become increasingly popular alternatives to more potent, prescription drugs for anxiety and insomnia. Kava is an ancient ceremonial and medicinal herb of the South Sea islands: Tahiti, Fiji, the Marshall and Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, and Samoa. Kava's Latin name is Piper methysticum, meaning "intoxicating pepper."2 In the South Pacific, kava is served as a drink in coconut shell bowls. Kava has a mellowing effect, inducing a state of contentment and well-being. |

In the Slone Survey (Kaufman et al., 2002) of 2590 participants from about the same period of time, 81 % stated that they used at least one medication (Rx or OTC), 50% took at least one prescription drug, and 7% took five or more drugs simultaneously. |

From a green perspective, talking of chemical drugs as "unnatural" and herbal remedies as "natural" is problematic. The interactions that occur among plants and humanity on the biochemical level show us that chemistry is also natural. If a chemical exists in the body of the plant, it must be natural. If it was not natural, it could not exist without causing major trauma to life on earth. This is, of course, also the case with technological aberrations such as plutonium, but in general, how can we differentiate between what is and is not natural based simply on how it is presented to us? |

Because valerian-containing products are often promoted as natutal herbal remedies, the public mistakenly believes they are safe to take on a regular basis. Studies indicate, howevet, that thete is a significant toxicity risk when valerian is taken over an extended period of time. Patients can develop tolerance to valerian because of its Valium-like properties, and people often need to take increasing amounts of it as time goes by to continue to obtain the desired hypnotic effect. The chronic use of valerian could result in permanent livet damage and potential central nervous system impairment. |
