Labels reveal other valuable information about the quality of herbal products. My advice is to consider the following when making your selection. standardization. As I mentioned earlier, I prefer standardized extracts over other herbal preparations because they indicate that I'm getting a specific amount of one or more of an herb's medicinal compounds. If a product is standardized, its label should say so. The label should also indicate which of an herb's active ingredients have been used for standardization.

Some herbal products have ingredients other than the herbs themselves. Tinctures, for example, are made with alcohol or glycerin. Tablets may contain all sorts of filler substances. Does the product you're considering have extra ingredients? If so, how does it look? It should be clean, with no obvious extraneous materials. dosage. A product's dosage can serve as a good indicator of its quality. Sometimes a dose of one brand is two to three times the dose of another brand. In this case, more is not necessarily better! I'm not comfortable recommending dosages, because I'm not a physician.
In German pharmacies, herbal products are sold right alongside conventional medications. Herbs account for about 30 percent of Germany's nonprescription drug sales, and they're routinely recommended by pharmacists and prescribed by physicians (especially general practitioners). In fact, German pharmacists and M.D.'s are required to study herbal medicine as part of their professional training.
An Herbal Buying Guide So now you're in the health food store, scanning shelves of herbal products in search of good standardized extracts. And you're wondering which brand should you buy. At this point, I must reveal that since I retired some years ago, I've been serving as a consultant to Nature's Herbs, a wholly owned subsidiary of Twinlab. I'm a senior science advisor, helping the company to select the best herbs and the best extraction processes so that it can produce the best products.

See: LABELLING OF herbal products. Dosage of tablets varies according to each product. As a general average: Adults (over 12), 2 tablets thrice daily. As regards efficacy, the Licensing Authority bears in mind the traditional nature of herbal products and realise that it would be unrealistic to require special studies such as clinical trials. Instead, it will accept evidence found in established official and herbal pharmacopoeias to support an application for a licence. They feel "that an absence of scientific proof should not prevent continued use by the public of herbal treatments they have come to rely on". The Licensing Authority will accept evidence of efficacy when based on appropriate bibliographies and traditional use.

America's leading health-food stores. Of those surveyed, 50% of all herb sales were for laxative products. In my own formulating work I've discovered also that my laxative formulas have always outsold every other product I've created, seven to one. It can truly be said that health-minded Americans have a real love affair with their colons and herbal laxatives. Most of the herb books on the market will list a number of standard laxative agents: cascara sagrada, buckthorn bark, senna, turkey rhubarb, and psyllium seed. These are in addition to the old standby of prune juice.

Most of those dollars are spent in natural food stores, for everything from concentrated herbal essences and capsules to beauty products—those mysterious herbal lotions and potions you may have seen lurking on the shelves but couldn't find a use for. But the simplest—and surely the most pleasurable—way to unleash the healing power of herbs is the way generations before us did: by using them to lend flavor to their food and brewing flavorful teas. There are many ways to do this. Try a tabbouleh (buckwheat) salad spiked with the crisp flavors of parsley and mint.
