As Hazardous Herbs Some people believe that all herbal products are safe. This is far from true. Although this is not a complete list of unsafe plants, those mentioned deserve special attention. The following herbs are dangerous and should not be used as remedies. Plant •'¦*: Potential Danger Borage Harmful in large doses; may cause liver damage and cancer Broom Toxic; diuretic Chaparral .
These herbal products are prepared for external use. Use according to label directions. not drugs. Of course, if an herb manufacturer wants to prove the therapeutic value of an herb, it's welcome to do so. But the FDA's medical testing process is so expensive that most herbal manufacturers can't afford it, says Dr. Duke—especially since the return, financially, is never as great with herbal remedies as with pharmaceuticals. "Who can afford to invest $231 million to prove that an herb such as feverfew, which you and I could grow in our backyards, can prevent migraines?
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) forbids manufacturers of herbal products from putting therapeutic information on the labels, says James Duke, Ph.D., an economic botanist and toxicology specialist retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That's because herbs are considered to be nutritional supplements, A Road Map for Shoppers When you walk into a health food store, you'll find that herbs are sold in a variety of forms. Teas are probably the most familiar, but here's a quick consumer's guide to other types. Capsules and tablets.

Manifesto for a New Medicine: Your Guide to Healing Partnerships and the Wise Use of Alternative Therapies

James S. Gordon, M.D.

There are far more health food stores than there were in 1990, and many carry complete lines of herbal products, food supplements, and homeopathic remedies. Even conventional pharmacies and chain drugstores have set aside whole sections for "natural remedies." Comprehensive training in acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, and naturopathy, or natural medicine, is widely available, and most major cities have introductory courses in these and other alternative approaches.
Every health food store and many pharmacies have several lines of herbal products. In 1974, however, I could find only the naturalist's and hippie's bible, Jethro Kloss's Back to Eden, and a few raggedy copies of old herbals— compilations of herbs. The herbs, arranged in alphabetical order and indexed by disease, were accompanied by line drawings or watercolors and Latin names. Some of the books, like Mrs. Grieve's Herbal, were both cozy and familiar, and rich with history and literature, myth and magic.

Outside China, a worldwide distribution network is already in place making herbal products readily available. 5. The Chinese have the will, facilities, and manpower to conduct extensive clinical and scientific research; they are doing so in several research facilities in China. (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, all countries more modernized than China, and advanced European countries like Germany, are also conducting scientific research on Chinese herbs.) 6.

Whether the herbal product is available by prescription or OTC is based upon its application and safety of use. herbal products sold in German pharmacies are reimbursed by insurance if they are prescribed by a physician. Because the German system allowed companies to market their products according to the guidelines of the Commission E, many companies achieved success with their products allowing them to fund the necessary research to gain greater acceptance within mainstream conventional medicine.
Grinding is employed in the production of crude herbal products as well as in the initial phases of extracts. Often the material has to be pre-chopped or minced before feeding it into a grinder. In the process of grinding, a number of machines can be used, but the most widely used is the hammer mill. These machines are simple in design. The hammers, arranged radially, follow the rotation of the shaft to which they are attached, breaking up the material that is fed into the machine from above.
The answer: Germany addressed the issue of rational claims for herbal products by developing the Commission E series of monographs (now totaling over 400). The monograph system allowed companies to market their products according to the guidelines of the Commission E. With the ability to make appropriate claims, many companies achieved success with their products and were then able to then fund the necessary research to gain greater acceptance within mainstream, conventional medicine.
Currently, herbal products continue to be sold as "food supplements" and manufacturers are prohibited from making any therapeutic claims for their products. The German experience: St John's wort extract as an example Over 25 double-blind controlled trials (15 vs. placebo, 10 vs. standard anti-depressant drugs) have shown St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) extracts standardized for hypericin content to yield excellent results in the treatment in depression with virtually no side-effects.
The best single illustration of the difference in the regulatory issues of herbal products in the US compared to Germany is Ginkgo biloba. In Germany, as well as France, extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves are registered for the treatment of cerebral and peripheral vascular insufficiency.7 Ginkgo products are available by prescription and OTC purchase. Ginkgo extracts are among the top three most widely prescribed drugs in both Germany and France, with a combined annual sales of more than $500 million.
In Japan, the figure is thought to be even higher. herbal products are a major business in the US as well, with an estimated annual sales of $4 bilhon for 1996. Annual sales have been increasing for several years. However, it is interesting to note that while annual sales of ginseng products in the US in 1992 was roughly $10 million, over 3 million pounds (roughly $100 million) of American ginseng were exported.2,3 The rebirth of herbal medicine, especially in developed countries, is largely based on a renewed interest by the public and scientific researchers.

You won't find many references to such problems in standard interaction references or data bases. That interactions can occur, however, is unquestioned. Provided products are safe and are not promoted by exaggerated claims, the future of herbal products is not at risk. A doctor with knowledge and experience of herbal medicine may prescribe them if he considers that they are a necessary part of treatment for his patient. Herbalism is aimed at gently activating the body's defence mechanisms so as to enable it to heal itself. There is a strong emphasis on preventative treatment. In the main, herbal remedies are used to relieve symptoms of self-limiting conditions.

All herbal products lose potency over time. Bulk herbs and teas go first, and they seldom have expiration dates. Tinctures and capsules last a bit longer. Ideally, any packaged product that you choose should have an expiration date. Beware the Hazardous Herbs While I prefer herbs to pharmaceuticals in part because herbs are safer, I'm not suggesting that all herbs are harmless. In fact, some can be quite deadly. Fortunately, they're rarely, if ever, sold in stores that carry well-labeled, commercially marketed herbal preparations. But they're listed here anyway—just in case.
