Herbs of Life: Health & Healing Using Western & Chinese Techniques

Lesley Tierra
See book keywords and concepts
It is interesting to note that while most herbal products cannot make claims on what they are good for, homeopathics can. This is because they were once the main medicines used in Western medicine before drugs were created, and so the remedies were already passed and accepted by the system at that time. Herbal Body Products While not used for healing, herbs are now made into shampoos, conditioners, lotions, deodorants, soaps, creams, hair sprays, massage oils and bath lotions, bubbles and oils.
There are organizations now, however, whose job it is to promote and maintain herbal standards, including AHPA (American herbal products Association), AHG (American Herbalists Guild) and the Herb Research Foundation. For further guidelines, see the "Shopper's Guide to Quality Herbs" given at the end of this chapter. Herbs will be available as the root, leaf, seeds, flowers, fruit, stems, bark, root bark or any combination of these. For some herbs only one form is used, such as ginger root or chamomile flowers.

The National Center for the Study of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), at the National Institutes of Health, was set up to study herbal products, a clear demonstration that there is significant interest in the United States. The Canadian government has also launched a multimillion-dollar initiative to investigate "nutraceuticals," foods that have pharmaceutical-like properties when eaten whole, such as soy foods, flax, and various herbs.

The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine: How to Remedy and Prevent Disease with Herbs, Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutrients

Daniel B. Mowrey, Ph.D.

The bottom line, cutting through the misleading aspects of the paper and the irresponsible editorial style of the journal, is that one should be careful about where one buys herbal products. Burdock root is perfectly safe, as long as it truly is Burdock root. See Also DETOXIFY/NURTURE. SKIN DISORDERS; BONE-FLESH-CARTILAGE ECHINACEA is also a classical alterative. A physician during the previous century reported over 100 blood counts made in cases of infectious disease, mainly tuberculosis.
It is hoped that the reader is using good herbal products to not only treat colds and infections but to prevent them as well. During cold weather or other periods of stress, the body requires a well-rounded health regimen, including herbs, to maintain health (1). ECHINACEA, one of the primary medicinal agents of the past century, was used to treat common fevers and minor infections, as well as typhoid, meningitis, malaria, diptheria, etc., and is still an expedient treatment of infectious diseases today.

These two benign solvent-preservatives can adequately infuse our favorite herbs and conserve the herbal products we prepare for our domestic purposes. Bear in mind medicated vinegar has been an important player in official literature throughout medical history. The pharmacopoeias of many countries have included the Four Thieves Vinegar as an official medicine.
Remember, when you make medicines at home and distribute your own herbal products to family and friends, you don't have the FDA (forever dull administration) editing your labels, monitoring your moves, or standardizing your panache. Herbalism thrives freely in the home — you can be as elaborate, outrageous, and nonconforming as you want. Package as you will. Have fun, give your herbal medicines a magical air. They will entertain and entice, manifesting ancillary wonders in a special way.
Let the herbal marketers rave on, but know it is in your home that you can access and create for yourself the finest, most effective herbal products. In the simple environment of your domestic dwelling, you can fully empower yourself with experiences of functional herbal knowledge and competency; and all you need to help you do this is some basic knowledge and your own juicy kitchen-lab, supplied with the following equipment. JARS AND BOTTLES Jars are used to hold, blend, shake, seal, and store herbal stuff.
Mind you, there are some excellent herb companies active in the marketplace run by skilled herbalists whose intent is to make high-quality herbal products and a good living while also empowering their customers. These folks provide premium-quality products while evoking a marketing atmosphere of integrity and sound herbal education. I praise and honor these folks.
These same nou-veau-archetype symbols are being adopted by much of today's herbal products industry to suggest that they also produce (herbal) commodities that the common person— who does not have access to the company's advanced technology and special (scientific) knowledge—can't match.

You can usually find standardized herbal extracts quite easily wherever herbal products are sold. If you don't see them, ask for them. If an herbal product is standardized, it will say so on the label. Wkat trie Latels Won't Tell You Unfortunately, the labels of herbal preparations often don't say much else. That's because an herb must be approved as a "drug" in the eyes of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to specify its medical or therapeutic use.

Be suspicious of herbal products that claim to boost energy. They may contain naturally occurring caffeinelike ingredients that could interact with other medications. Coffee and tea can get some people into trouble in an entirely different way. Both beverages (but especially tea) may interact with supplements taken to combat iron deficiency anemia. The tannins in the tea grab on to the iron in the supplement and keep it from being absorbed.

Questions have been raised about the consistency of the milligram dosages found in herbal products, since there are no standards for their manufacture comparable to those for prescription drugs. In spite of this, many patients report the herb is an effective antidepressant, which has also been borne out in the many clinical studies that have been published. Although herbs like St. John's wort have been used for centuries and appear to be safe, they are perhaps best used short-term, for up to a year, in combination with other natural alternatives.

Phytoestrogens are found in soy products and herbal products like Dong Quai and Black Cohosh. An adequate intake of phytoestrogens will minimize the symptoms of estrogen deficiency. In Asian countries, where the intake of fermented soy products* is very high, women suffer virtually no adverse symptoms of menopause. Phytoestrogens contain compounds that have no propensity to increase the risk of breast cancer, and many studies show that they may reduce the risk for cancer. Eliminate caffeine and drink adequate amounts of pure water per day.

The pay was horrible, and the attitude was cheap, but it was a living, and somehow I was going to tell this story. They let me talk and gave me an audience. I came to the realization that this story was to be a book, but I was not a writer. I had no one to commission me to write it. I had to pound it out myself in my spare time when I was not working, and I no more wanted to do it than I wanted to speak in public that first time. But it had to be done. I learned so many things from living in Los Angeles.

For ingredients that have no RDI, such as herbs, the package will list the ingredients. herbal products must identify the part of the plant used to make the substance. Supplements could only claim to be 'high potency' if a nutrient is present at 100 per cent or more of the RDI. For multivitamin supplements to carry the 'high potency' labeling, at least two-thirds of the nutrients must be present at levels that are more than 100 per cent of the RDI.
