Milk thistle
This is a traditional herbal remedy for liver problems that is just now getting recognition for its cancer-fighting properties. A primary way it works against cancer is to bind to loose iron. [Gastroenterology 109: 1941-49, 1995] Surprisingly, silibinin, the active ingredient in silymarin, the extract of milk thistle, is now considered a cancer-preventive agent for skin, cervical, prostate and breast cancer. [Molecular Carcinogenesis 26: 321-33, 1999] It is now in Phase I study for human prostate cancer. |

The Latin name of elecampane comes from Helen of Troy, who was supposed to have carried the herb with her while being abducted by Paris. The herb was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to treat indigestion, melancholy, sciatica, bronchitis, and asthma.
EVIDENCE OF BENEFIT
Elecampane is regarded as a long-term treatment for respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. It is also recommended as a daily supplement to improve digestion. |
The herbal treatment relieved symptoms without the side effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and steroids, which are helpful but can cause serious side effects, especially if used for long periods.
• Atherosclerosis and high cholesterol. Ginger retards the production of cholesterol by the liver, where most of the body's cholesterol originates. |
Herbal formulas call for thick, diagonal slices of peeled rhizome. Powdered dioscorea serves as a thickening agent for many foods.
EVIDENCE OF BENEFIT
Dioscorea has analgesic, antiarthritic, antiasthmatic, antidiabetic, antitussive, and expectorant effects. It is used for colic, irritable bowel syndrome, kidney stones, and neuralgia.
Benefits of dioscorea for specific health conditions include the following:
• Diabetes. In animal studies, alcohol extracts of dioscorea have had dramatic effects on blood-sugar levels. |
This herbal combination also improved regularity.
• Liver problems and gallstones. The bitter principles in dandelion increase bile production and bile flow in the liver. This makes it useful for people with sluggish liver function due to alcohol abuse or poor diet. It is restorative to the liver and helps reduce the risk of developing gallstones, but you should avoid it if you already have gallstones.
• Osteoporosis. Dandelion is a rich source of boron, which helps to raise estrogen levels in the blood, and in turn helps preserve bone. |

According to the study report, subjects who took 75 mg of this herbal product per day for four months saw a 50 percent or greater reduction in the frequency of their migraine attacks. The only side effect reported was occasional burping. Other earlier German studies confirm this finding. Petadolex can be purchased through many Internet sources.
Research also shows that riboflavin reduces migraine frequency. Natural foods that contain good amounts of riboflavin include leafy green vegetables, avocados and grains. Alcohol consumption and oral contraceptives tend to cause riboflavin deficiency. |

Natural medicine refers specifically to the use of natural and nontoxic substances as well as preventive lifestyle measures to promote health, and is the most accurate term to describe herbal medicine. Many natural health practitioners feel that the "whole" in
"holistic" refers to the whole person, not necessarily to the whole range of medical options available, and point out that many aspects of conventional medicine do not treat the whole patient. Most agree that holistic medicine does emphasize addressing the whole body and life of a person, both in sickness and in health. |

Smoking is especially problematic in women who use oral contraceptives. |
Hot flash frequency and intensity did not differ between the herbal interventions and placebo at 3, 6, or 12 months with one exception. At 12 months, symptom intensity was significantly worse in the group that received the multibotanical formula plus dietary soy versus the placebo group. The unfortunate news here is that black cohosh extract, in a higher dose than is generally used in clinical practice, did not show benefit in the relief of hot flashes.
In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, a combination of black cohosh and Saint John's wort was studied. |

The FDA already ordered the destruction of recipe books that mentioned the natural herbal sweetener stevia, by the way...)
Will the FTC now order the destruction of Trudeau's Natural Cures weight loss book? If so, I can't wait to cover this one. They'll turn Trudeau into a martyr and find themselves under attack by a mob of raging librarians (I'm not kidding. Librarians don't tolerate book burnings...).
I'm not saying Trudeau's marketing of his Natural Cures weight loss book is one hundred percent honest. I haven't read the book, and I haven't watched the infomercial. |

Adulteration: Mature tea leaves (with a lower caffeine and tannin content) are used for extract production but are also frequently encountered in low-grade tea varieties. They are difficult to recognize in batches of cut tea or tea bags. Whole and rolled green tea with a somewhat intact leaf structure is therefore preferred. The Ph. Fr. states a maximum of 2% foreign matter.

In the German Standard Licenses, appropriate indications concerning drug stability are provided for a variety of drugs. For essential oil drugs, the shelf life can be calculated based on the initial value (content at the time of packaging) and the (%) decrease per time unit. For other drugs, the shelf life is indicated directly in years. |

PHILOSOPHICAL CHANGE ON THE WESTERN FRONT
A change in the philosophical beliefs and premises of science led to the demise of herbal medicine early in this century. At the turn of the century, natural healing was well developed, highly respected, and relied upon here as much as it was in any other part of the world. There were hundreds of institutions and schools that taught methods of natural healing. Nature was respected as a primary and competent resource for health-giving and healing substances, and medical practice reflected that.

Nutritional and herbal supplements can then be used in addition to your conventional treatment.
A naturopathic physician can also provide natural therapies to augment your immune support, prevent side effects from the medications, and help you to recover optimally from the infection.
If you have severe liver disease due to hepatitis B, I would strongly consider alternative treatments as the primary treatment, with careful monitoring of liver enzymes and liver biopsy with the help of a specialist. |

Tooth and Gum Tonic (see Resources) is an herbal mouth rinse that is also effective at inhibiting mouth sores. You will not find this product in any health food store or pharmacy, but it can be ordered by a dentist or health care professional.
Other suggestions for relieving mouth sores:
• Rinse mouth with a decoction of white oak bark, sage, licorice, and slippery elm; use four to six times daily.
• Take acidophilus tablets internally and also rinse mouth with Vi to 1 teaspoon of acidophilus in 1 ounce of warm water before bed.
• DGL, a licorice-derived powder, is available in tablet form. |
Enemas
Enemas are useful to cleanse the colon and stimulate the liver. herbal, acidophilus, or coffee enemas are all helpful for constipation. Coffee enemas, in particular, are a safe and effective way to avoid the use of laxatives. See chapter 8 for formulas and instructions for taking enemas.
It is important to remember that when treating cancer, both diarrhea and constipation should be treated immediately.
NAUSEA AND VOMITING
Although there is a drug called Zofran (ondansetron HCL) that works very well in combating the nausea from chemotherapy, I am not convinced that this is beneficial. |
By using herbal nutrients, on the other hand, such as saffron extract (which is rich in aqueous carotenoids), one can enhance oxygen uptake of the cell and quench free radicals at the same time. This is another example of the wonder of nature and its healing properties.
Another factor in the inhibition of tumor-cell proliferation is temperature. |
A good substitute for coffee is green tea or other herbal teas (e.g., nettles, dandelion, licorice, orange peel, red clover). Green tea infusion contains catechin polyphenols, which are nonspecific and broad-spectrum anticarcinogens. Black tea also contains some novel polyphenols called theaflavins, which occur through the oxidation process of green tea's catechins. Black tea's theaflavins and green tea's catechins are also strong inhibitors of HIV-reverse transcriptase.
Alcohol
Cancer patients should avoid alcohol. It depletes glutathione levels and stresses the liver. |
In a popular Indian daily rejuvenizer amla is called chyvanprash, combined with a blend of delightful aromatic herbs to create a sweet, jamlike herbal concoction. It is esteemed for its power to enhance health and reverse the aging process. Amla is a rich source of other antioxidants, including bioflavonoids, vitamin E, polyphenols, the vitamin B complex, and carotenoids. Studies have shown that amla can elevate levels of the important antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dis-mutase (SOD). |

Four-Gentlemen Decoction
This traditional Chinese herbal formula contains the four "gentlemen" of TCM: atractylodis, ginseng, hoelen, and licorice. In Chinese culture, it was common to refer to four important things, in this case, four important herbs, that were harmonious as a group and not given to extremes as four gentlemen or four emperors. This title was modeled after the Confucian term for a person who exhibits ideal behavior. |
