Dr. Varro Tyler. In one reported analysis, two out of three feverfew products bought in a Louisiana health food store had no parthenolide at all. Keep feverfew in the refrigerator to prevent its deterioration.
Should You Try It?
If you have migraines, feverfew should be your first "remedy of choice," because it can block headaches from occurring and reduce their severity with far less risk of side effects than prescription pharmaceuticals, and it is much less expensive. If it works, it's a miracle for you, too. |

De Materia Medica. This work stood the test of time—it was considered the absolute authority for over 1700 years! Dioscorides reflects the low esteem in which fungi seem to be often held in the ancient world— he says of them in general that they are difficult to digest, often poisonous, and he mentions that "they grow amongst rusty nails or rotten rags, or ye holes of serpents, or amongst trees properly bearing harmful fruits." The only fungus that seemed to have any kind of reputation as a healing medicine was the "Agaric" (Agaricon). |

His father had taken him on herb-collecting trips all over the countryside, by the dawn's early light as well as by the dark of the moon. People came from miles around to consult with his father about their miseries. Sometimes they would be given potions to take home. Perhaps a hot tub might be prepared with a selection of dried branches; the patient would soak away his pain in the tub in the kitchen. No one with the miseries ever left the healer without being questioned on eating and drinking habits. One would be cautioned about the quality of the bread being eaten, the wine being drunk. |

In general, the studies contained in this book do not prove or disprove that complementary therapies work. The primary reason for this is that there are a multitude of complementary therapies, and each may be used singularly or in combination to assist the cancer patient. Each treatment protocol must be judged on its own merits on well-defined patient groups. To date, very little clinical research has been conducted on the majority of complementary therapies, and it is simply too early to make many judgments. |

And most doctors fall somewhere in between. It is worth knowing whether you are dealing with a heavy prescriber, a sparing pre-scriber, or someone in berween. Doctors who prescribe a lot of drugs may not announce their policy other than to hand you a sample of a new drug when the old drug was working fine. A patient (who can't observe a doctor every day) might notice that almost every appointment ends with a prescription—and often a free drug sample. |

• Carotenes counter all phases of the cancer cascade and are as important to the woman with metastasized cancer as the one who wants to prevent it. As little as one carrot a day can retard the progression of cancer. In some cases and in some laboratory studies, carrots have enabled cells to return to normal, leaving no remaining trace of cancer. European and American medicine. For instance, an extract of fly agaric was prescribed by the Eclectics in the early 19th century for night sweats due to debilitating disease as well as "profuse sweating during the daytime." The dose given was 5 drops of a 1% solution of extract (Felter & Lloyd, 1898). Culbreth (1927), another Eclectic doctor, reported that this fungus "reduces force and frequency of pulse, contracts muscles of intestines and bladder, increases abdominal secretions, causes dyspnea, paralysis, death. |

This assertion is simply not true. In fact, the last 10 to 20 years have produced a tremendous amount of information concerning plants, crude plant extracts, and nutritional substances as medicinal agents.
Compare this to just 30 years ago, at which time it was impossible for the scientific establishment to determine exactly how many herbs promote their healing effects. |

Research suggests that certain chemicals produced in this tree prevent the production of chemicals in our bodies that start the pain process. According to researchers, boswellic acid extract has been shown to prevent tissue breakdown and reduce the production of biochemicals that cause inflammation. As pain lessens, take the above dosage twice and then once a day, says Dr. Broadhurst. It's safe to take boswellia for 6 to 12 months. If your symptoms haven't improved by then, seek professional care. |

Of course, testosterone, genes and poor circulation are not the only factors that cause men to lose their locks. Unlike the man who sprouts it, the body considers hair one of its least important assets. It is one of the first things to go when a serious illness, nervous-system disease or advancing years demand their share of limited nutrients. Some drug treatments, especially ones for arthritis, gout, depression, high blood pressure and heart problems, can also shut down hair growth. So can radiation therapy and the various scalp problems that fall under the umbrella of dermatitis. |

Determining quality
In the past, the quality of the extract produced was often difficult to determine, as many of the active principles of the herbs were unknown. However, recent advances in extraction processes, coupled with improved analytical methods, have reduced this problem of quality control.1"3 Expressing the strength of an extract by the concentration method does not accurately measure potency because there may be great variation among manufacturing techniques and raw materials. |

Pharmacology
The chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical applications of echinacea have been the subject of over 350 scientific studies.2-3 The overwhelming majority of the clinical studies have utilized an extract of the juice of the aerial (above-ground) portion of E. purpurea along with 22 percent ethanol (for preservation).
The following subsections summarize some of the vast pharmacological information on echinacea, with particular attention given to the species used, part of the plant used, solvent used for extraction, and other relevant features. |

Formulas typically contain from 4 to 12 herbs and are can be taken in a variety of ways, including decoctions, pills, powders, and lozenges.
Approximately 400 historic formulas are in common use today, 20% of which originated from the text Shan Han Za Bing Lun (Discussion of Cold-induced Disorders and Miscellaneous Diseases) written in the third century A.D. Contemporary formulas have also been devised, many of which are based on pharmacological studies. Whether historic or contemporary, formulas are commonly altered to suit the needs of each individual patient. |

Santa Monica, California. If you alternate between feeling constipated and having diarrhea and suspect that it may be caused by anxiety or medication, Dr. Watson suggests Nux vomica. And if your belly is bloated, your stools are hard and dry, you have a painful anus after defecating and you feel depressed and run-down, try Natrum muriaticum, she says. For each of these remedies, Dr. Watson says to take either a 6X dose three or four times a day or one 30C dose once a day.
Graphites, Nux vomica and Natrum muriaticum are available in many health food stores. |
