Historically, mullein has been used as a remedy for the respiratory tract, particularly in cases of irritating coughs with bronchial congestion.24 Other herbs commonly used as expectorants in traditional medicine include elecampane (p. 418), lobelia (p. 442), yerba santa (Eriodicyton californica), wild cherry (p. 468) bark, horehound (p. 434) (Marrubium vulgare), gumweed, anise, and eucalyptus (p. 421). Animal studies have suggested that some of these increase discharge of mucus.25 However, none of these herbs have been studied for efficacy in humans.

The essential oil of horseradish (p. 436) has been shown to kill bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections.23 The concentration that is required to kill these bacteria can be attained in human urine after oral ingestion of the oil. One early study found that horseradish extract may help people with urinary tract infections.24 Further studies are necessary to confirm this report.

In 1978, the German government established Commission E, a panel of physicians, pharmacists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, and other professionals familiar with the vast body of historical and scientific literature pertaining to herbs and medicinal plants. The panel's mission is to pass judgment on the safety and effectiveness of various herbs as treatments for human health complaints. To date, Commission E has reviewed more than 300 herbs and has published a report (or monograph) on each herb's therapeutic dosage, benefits, and side effects. |

In one study, forty-eight women diagnosed with infertility (ages 23 to 39) took vitex once daily for 3 months.21 Forty-five women completed the study, with successful treatment reported in thirty-nine women. Seven women became pregnant during the study, while in twenty-five of the women, progesterone levels normalized—which may increase the chances for pregnancy. Many doctors of natural medicine recommend taking 40 drops of a liquid extract of vitex each morning with some liquid. Encapsulated powdered vitex provides a similar amount of the product, with one capsule taken in the morning. |

Christianity. Many medieval churchyards contain ancient yews, some thought to be over 1,000 years old. In the Middle Ages, the best longbows were made from yew wood, as were "magic wands." Medicinal Actions & Uses Though yew has been used in small doses to treat rheumatic and urinary problems, its extreme toxicity makes it an unsafe medicinal plant. Research Taxol inhibits cell division and has been extensively researched for its potential as an anticancer drug. Taxol is most commonly found in the Pacific yew (T. brevijolia), though some varieties of T. baccata also contain the substance. |

Diet
Diet is especially important when treating sleep disorders, and it is essential to rule out food intolerances as a cause. In one study of infants, sleeplessness was eliminated by removing cow's milk from the diet and then reproduced by its reintroduction.18 Leon Chaitow, N.D, DO., of London, England, and other alternative practitioners recommend a combination of nutritional adjustments to aid sleep, including:
• A marked reduction in alcohol consumption.
• Avoid caffeine in all forms (tea, coffee, cola, chocolate). |

Most plant-source foods contain some fluoride, though the amount can vary gready depending on soil fluoride content. Soil deficiency of fluoride is fairly common.
Fluoride is added to the drinking water of many municipalities at the concentration of 1 ppm. More than 2 ppm can cause problems, so the concentration must be finely monitored. People drinking city water who also consume fluoride-containing foods or black teas can develop fluoride problems as well, though toxicity has not been found to be appreciable with moderate amounts. |

Short-term infusion (infusum) is the commonest method of preparing medicinal teas. Boiling water is poured over the crushed or crumbled drug, covered with a lid and left to steep in a warm place for at least ten to fifteen minutes. |

Solid foods should be restricted to brown rice, steamed vegetables, and moderate intake of lean protein sources.
In chronic cases, follow the dietary recommendations given in Chapter 50. The diet should be low in saturated fats, simple carbohydrates (sugar, white flour, fruit juice, honey, etc.), oxidized fatty acids (fried oils), and animal products. A diet which focuses on plant foods (i.e. a high-fiber diet) has been shown to increase the elimination of bile acids, drugs and toxic bile substances from the system. |
