Massive consumer interest and an avalanche of scientific discoveries about vitamin, mineral, amino acid, herbal, and phytochemical (natural plant compounds) supplementation in recent years are causing physicians to take a broader look at the health-promoting and cost-reducing potential that these natural substances offer.
Research has demonstrated, for instance, that vitamin E supplementation combats arterial plaque formation and enhances immune function. |

The FDA sees fit to allow medical claims for the drug, but not health claims for the herbal extract.) Saw palmetto is part of a comprehensive approach to the treatment of prostate enlargement.
Symptoms of prostate enlargement are difficulty starting urination, slow urine flow, frequent urination, urgency, retained urine in the bladder, dripping after completion of urination, and nighttime urination interrupting sleep. |

Be cautious when buying any of the herbal bottled iced teas that are now available: Many are heavily sweetened with honey and thus are high in sugar—so high, in some cases, that they count as a "sweets" serving.
Bottled Juices
Bottled lemonade and other natural drinks are better choices than caffeinated beverages. However, they are often flavored with a good deal of sugar, fruit juice concentrate, honey, or corn syrup, which makes them high in sugar. Check the nutrition label: If the fruit drink is not mostly juice, you should consider it a "sweets" serving, not a fruit serving. |

The plant is native to North America and was a favorite herbal remedy of the Native Americans. Those of you who remember Lydia Pinkham's Vegetable Compound may be interested to know that black cohosh was one of its main components.
Native Americans have used the herb for the treatment of chronic fatigue, malaria, rheumatism, kidney problems, female disorders and sore throat. It has also been used as a folk remedy for bronchitis, fever, itching, high blood pressure, anxiety, menstrual cramps and the symptoms of menopause. |
The use of butcher's broom as an herbal remedy dates back to the early Greeks who used it as a tonic and diuretic. However, butcher's broom was essentially an unknown during most of our century until the 1980s when it re-emerged on the health food scene accompanied by some sweeping claims, as evidenced by the above headline.
Butcher's broom (Ruscus aculaetus) is a short evergreen shrub belonging to the lily family. It grows in southern Europe and is a close relative of asparagus. The herb is also known as sweet broom, knee holly and box holly. |

Chamomile has been used in herbal medicine since the early Roman days and is commonly used worldwide. There are two kinds of chamomile (sometimes spelled camomile). Roman chamomile and chamomile are the common names used for the plant Anthemis nobilis. German chamomile, matricaria and manzanilla are common names for the plant Matricaria chamomilla.
Roman chamomile flowers have been used as an aromatic bitter (an appetite stimulant). Large doses can cause nausea and vomiting. A tea prepared from the flowers is sometimes helpful for indigestion. |

I was also given a specially prepared herbal potion by the grandmother of the antique shop family.
We eventually carried Jujuk with us back to Seattle, where we moved for our naturopathic training. When we were moving from one home to another in 1987, an antique dealer came to the garage sale we were having. He came directly to me, looked me in the eye, and asked me if I had any fertility dolls for sale. Without a moment's hesitation, I walked into the house, brought out Jujuk, and sold her. As the man walked down the drive, I realized I was pregnant. |

Damiana is a major herbal remedy in Mexican medical folklore. It has been used for the treatment of impotence, sterility, diabetes, kidney disease, bladder infections, asthma, bronchitis, chronic fatigue and anxiety. Does it work? Many Mexicans I have spoken with say, "mas o menos" (more or less) when referring to its role as an aphrodisiac. Some find that it "calms their nerves" and may even help them sleep better. It is a relatively safe, bitter-tasting herb.

Chapter 16 presents Western herbal medicine as a separate entity—in part because it lends itself to home care, in part because the herbs it employs are widely available in health food stores, pharmacies, supplement centers, and even some supermarkets. The chapters on homeopathy, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and naturopathy also touch on medicinal herbs, because herbs figure prominently in these alternative healing systems.

Used for years as an herbal alternative to diet drugs, HCA allows the muscles of the body to absorb more glucose, the sugar in the bloodstream that is the body's main form of fuel. The chromium taken with the HCA also helps with the absorption of glucose by the muscles.
The use of glucose is important. Glucose that is not used by the muscles and other body tissues stays in the bloodstream and causes the dangerous rise in blood sugar that is known as diabetes. Elevated blood sugar causes damage to the organs and other body parts. |

In two studies, survival times reportedly doubled among those patients receiving herbal therapy that included astragalus, as compared with those who got only standard chemotherapies and radiation. Test-tube studies with astragalus show that the herb can have positive immune modulating effects. Researchers in the U.S. have confirmed some of these findings. Investigators at the University of Texas have reported strong immune-restorative effects in test-tube studies of cancer cells treated with astragalus extracts. |

Natural herbal Antiviral Medicines
Herbs make up the majority of antiviral alternatives. They include a wide range of different plant families and come from locations around the world. Some of the most interesting to me are those from the upper Amazon in South America, an area that we have only just explored around the fringes and where I conduct annual field research. Chinese antiviral herbs, another area that I specialize in, are among the most powerful and are discussed in the next chapter. |

Eurocel: This is a Korean product distributed by Allergy Research Group in the U.S. It is composed of Patrinia villosa, Artemisia capillaries, and schizandra. Patrinia, or bai hua baijiang cao, is a wild perennial plant used in Japan and Korea to reduce liver toxicity. What makes this formula attractive for HCV treatment is that a small pilot study carried out over a two-year period in Korea showed dramatic reduction in ALT levels, as well as viral load. |
Natural Medications: You may use the same herbal medications as for the common cold, but increase the dosage and take them for 10-14 days, even after symptoms subside. Gargle with myrrh tincture for sore throat. |

(Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, all countries more modernized than China, and advanced European countries like Germany, are also conducting scientific research on Chinese herbs.)

Another favorable aspect of the omega-3 fatty acids is their compatibility with the whole range of psychiatric medications, other prescription and non-prescription medication, and most herbal treatments. The omega-3 fatty acids can be safely mixed with whatever medication you may be currently receiving. The only known exceptions may be blood thinners, such as high-dose aspirin (or similar drugs, such as ibuprofen) or warfarin (Coumadin). |
The fundamental difference between the omega-3s and both synthetic or herbal antidepressants is that the omega-3 s are not used as an added, foreign substance to fix a problem. Supplying omega-3s appears to give back to the body what it requires and needs for proper functioning. The omega-3 fatty acids are essential building blocks of health that must be supplied in the diet— in food or supplement form. |

And soon a so-called "herbal fen-phen" that purported to do the same thing "naturally" appeared in health-food stores as well.
In the meantime a small biotech company in Massachusetts, Interneu-ron, was seeking approval for a new drug that had the potential to be a fully patented, FDA-sanctioned combination of fen and phen in one pill: dexfenfluramine. Since 1990, it had been marketed outside the U.S. by Serview, the French company that had created the compound. The drug was to be sold under the brand name Redux, using the marketing muscle of Interneuron's eventual partner Wyeth-Ayerst. |

And, of course, no one researched the benefits of herbal remedies on type 2 diabetes. Instead they were tightly focused on the art of giving medicine.
During the last eight years I have been a practicing family physician in Renton, Washington. I have had the privilege of caring for many patients afflicted with diabetes—borderline diabetes, advanced diabetes, and complicated diabetes—and for patients who didn't know they had or would get diabetes. There are many people in this latter category. |
In my program, I use a common weight-loss herb known as hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, which has been used for years as an herbal alternative to diet drugs like fen-phen and Redux.
HCA., unlike these controversial diet drugs that work by altering brain chemistry, allows the muscles of the body to absorb more glucose. When this happens, a "full" signal is sent to the brain, resulting in a reduced food intake.
In addition to increasing the rate of glucose absorption, hydroxycitric acid also binds up leftover glucose in the bloodstream, slowing down the rate at which glucose is converted to fat. |

The researchers concluded that the beneficial effects caused by these herbal infusions on urolithiasis can be attributed to some disinfectant action, and, tentatively, to the presence of saponins.12
DOSAGE
As a general tonic and mild liver remedy, the root can be used at the following dosages three times/day:
• dried root: 2-8 g by infusion or decoction
• fluid extract (1:1): 4-8 ml (1-2 tsp)
• tincture: alcohol-based tinctures of dandelion are not recommended because of the extremely high dosage required
• juice of fresh root: 4-8 ml (1-2 tsp)
• powdered solid extract (4:1): 250-500 mg. |

The remainder, as with any herbal preparation, is plant matter that is not used by the body. This difference between garcinia content and active HCA has been taken into consideration in the product chart below.
Research has shown that it is virtually impossible to take too much, or "overdose," on HCA. Researchers liken its toxic effects to citric acid, the substance that gives oranges, limes, and other citrus fruits its tangy taste. |

All reported cases of licorice-induced problems have been linked to candies, gum, laxatives, or chewing tobacco, not from the use of licorice as herbal medicine. (Most "licorice" candies manufactured in the United States are actually flavored with anise; imported candies usually contain real licorice.)38
Because licorice can lower potassium levels, it should not be combined with diuretics. Also, the side effects of licorice can mimic the effects—and side effects—of systemic steroids.
Deglycyrrhizinated forms of licorice are available and recommended for conditions such as ulcers. |

V These herbal allies nourish and tonify the veins, reduce irritation and inflammation, and help prevent blood clots:
Garlic is renowned as a protector of the blood vessels.
Red clover and nettle (equal parts) infused with a pinch of horsetail gently thins the blood, strongly counters inflammation, and is said to restore the veins to youthful vigor.
Hawthorn (Cratageus species) berries, leaves, and flowers have long been used as tincture (75-100 drops a day) or infusion (1-2 cups/250-500 ml) to relieve inflammation of the blood vessels. |
