For example, some active chemicals found in plants are not soluble in water; therefore preparing a hot tea with the plant or boiling the plant in hot water won't extract these chemicals into the resulting water extract/tea remedy. Generally, if the chemicals aren't soluble in water, they won't be broken down in the digestive process either, so taking the plant in capsule or tablet form won't be much help either. If the active chemicals aren't in the prepared remedy, they probably won't provide any of the benefits attributed to them. |

By the 1990s, the Soviet Union had initiated joint research projects with the Swedish herbal Institute (SHI) to test adaptogen formulas. The goal was to find the best combination of adaptogens to enhance mental and physical performance under stressful conditions. The Soviet-Swedish collaboration produced a formula called ADAPT, also known as MPPA—short for mono- and polyphenolic acids. |

Something will be labeled herbal skin care or the word "herbal" will be in it and it is only one herb. It is not even the main ingredient. It is still mineral oil based stuff many of the times. I find that outrageous as well. Is this part of the motivating factor that got you moving forward with this product line?
Minka: Well that was one of the main things because I could not find anything in the store that worked for my skin because if it was natural it seemed drying and that it would really deplete my skin of nutrients. |

It's not nearly as intense as, say, John Barron's super garlic tincture from Baseline Nutritionals, but that's okay since not everybody can handle that level of herbal intensity. Fitura's Power Immune is certainly far more potent than a lot of the herbal products found in retail, many of which are watery and seem to contain very little actual herbage.
The ingredients in Power Immune are:
Echinacea Purpurea
Licorice
Cat's Claw
Green Tea
Shitake Mushroom

Here's yet another herbal endorsement from Commission E. I know that I mention their recommendations a lot for certain conditions, but a nod from this body of scientists should be viewed with respect. Their research suggests using about one teaspoon of dried primrose flowers or a half-teaspoon of root in tea as an expectorant for treating bronchitis, colds and cough. I should point out also that this particular recommendation is for primrose, not evening primrose (Oenothera biennis), which shows up so often elsewhere in this book.

Soybean oil is an important source of stigmasterol and is a better source for laboratory synthesis of progesterone than is beta-sitosterol. Some herbal sources include burdock, fennel, licorice, alfalfa, anise, and sage.
The phenolic phytoestrogens are members of the flavonoids, the largest single family of plant substances, which has over 4,000 individual members. The term flavonoid derives from the Latin flavus meaning "yellow" because the flavonoids are responsible for the yellow, red, white, and blue pigments in plants. |
Numerous natural alternative therapies are available, including lifestyle changes, vitamin and mineral supplementation, herbal medicines, and natural hormones. Many of these have demonstrated their effectiveness in standard scientific studies. But at least an equal number have either shown no effect or an effect that was not significantly greater than the placebo effect. |

Willow bark was the original herbal aspirin. It contains a chemical called salicin, which the Bayer Company eventually transformed into little white tablets of acetylsalicylic acid—the painkilling drug called aspirin that so many people with arthritis take daily.
Willow bark tea has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects similar to those of aspirin. But because the irritation-causing ingredient in aspirin tablets is diluted in tea, you'll have less risk of stomach upset, ulcer and overdose if you take the tea instead of the pills.
Still, willow bark might upset your stomach. |

Cacao finds a place in the 1633 edition of John Gerard's famous herbal or General History of Plants, but he obviously knew it only at second hand. Accotding to this pioneer botanist, "Cacoa," as he calls it, is a fruit "well known in divets parts of America"; and he is aware that in some places they use it as money, "and to make a drinke, of which, though bitter, they highly esteeme." Gerard goes on to say that the fruit is "of an astringent and ungrateful taste," an opinion that he may have picked up by reading Benzoni. |
Cacao tree, from the 16th-century herbal of Francisco Hernandez, royal branches, a pattern technically physician to Philip 11 of Spain. known as "cauliflory." It is amusing to see European illustrators vainly trying to cope with this alien (to them) way of flowering: those who never saw the actual tree usually moved the cacao pods out to the smaller branches, obviously thinking that the native watercolorists whose work they were engraving had been mistaken in their observations. |

Sparkling Mineral Water herbal Complexion Mist ($7.48 for 4 ounces) isn't akin to San Pellegrino in a bottle, though misting that on your face would be a far gentler option. This product is not recommended due ro a list of irritants that includes balm mint, mistletoe, yarrow, and fragrant oak musk oil.
© Collagen TCM Therapeutic Cream Moisturizer ($13.48 for 2 ounces) claims to deliver 100% pure, soluble collagen and elastin onto the skin, rather than into it. |
Natural herbal Seaclay with Goa Herb Oil Balancing Mask, for Oily Skin ($8.98 for 4 ounces) contains peppermint oil, which sabotages an otherwise effective but average clay mask. Goa herb oil (also known as ringworm oil) is very irritating to skin and mucous membranes, and is also easily absorbed, where it can cause systemic problems (Source: www. naturaldatabase.com). |
Deep Cleansing herbal Clay Masque ($19 for 4.4 ounces) is as standard a clay mask as it gets. Although this masque has enough emollients to make it more "comfortable" than many other clay masks, the emollients are more suited to normal to dry skin than oily skin. Clay is not cleansing in the least, though it can absorb oil from skin.
© Intensive Hydrating Masque ($19 for 5 ounces) brings the skin a mixed bag of helpful and potentially harmful ingredients and, despite the name, isn't all that hydrating (you won't think so if your skin is dry to very dry). |

Nutraceuticals may range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements, and diets to genetically engineered "designer" food, herbal products, and processed products, such as cereals, soups, and beverages. The increasing interest in nutraceuticals reflects the fact that consumers hear about epidemiological studies indicating that a specific diet or component of the diet is associated with a lower risk for a certain disease.
The major active nutraceutical ingredients in plants are flavonoids. The flavonoids are a group of organic molecules ubiquitously distributed in vascular plants. |

Some actually contain the very same chemicals banned by the FDA in herbal medicine.
For example, the FDA outlawed the selling of ephedra, a common herb in Chinese Medicine, yet the same active chemical is openly allowed to be purchased in over-the-counter cold medicines sold at virtually every corner pharmacy in America. Apparently, the FDA believes the herb is dangerous, but somehow the refined, highly-concentrated drug is far safer -- which is like saying crack is safer than coca leaf tea. |

It contains krebs cycle nutrients, high-end forms of all the major minerals, expensive forms of B vitamins (their vitamin B-12 is methylcobalamin, not the toxic cyanocobalamin found in cheap products) and powerful anti-cancer herbal ingredients like turmeric and quercetin.
It has none of the usual junk found in multi-vitamins for kids (no artificial colors, no sugars, no chemical sweeteners, etc.), but it's loaded with plant extracts and even tastes great thanks to the xylitol and stevia in the formula. Overall, the festival has already been a wonderful journey of food, fun, healing and artistry, and it's only beginning! Tomorrow will see probably twice as many people at the event, along with yet more musical performances, spiritual teachers and raw foods speakers. I'll do my best to keep reporting on the event throughout the weekend, assuming I'm not high on raw cacao and passed out in a hammock somewhere, wired on hemp protein and maca root... |
Brigitte offers some outstanding books, including The Desktop Guide to herbal Medicine, which you can find on her website. See more of her books here: http://www.brigittemars.com/framefiles/books.htm
Although Dr. Gabriel Cousens isn't personally at the event this weekend, his Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center is represented here (www.TreeofLife.nu). If you're looking for a miraculous transformation with a raw foods lifestyle, check out his retreat located in Southern Arizona. Thousands of people have gone there and experienced amazing healings from diseases like diabetes and cancer. |

It's called herbal Aloe Force and it combines raw aloe vera gel with a potent combination of anti-cancer herbs including cat's claw, "Essiac" herbs and astragalus. I'm not sure yet if there's any of the aloe vera leaf sap found in this formula (I'm working on finding that out), and that's important because I like to avoid the leaf sap and just eat the gel. In any case, I immediately recognized it as a highly medicinal cancer-busting formula that I know would be extremely helpful in preventing or treating various forms of cancer. |

Herbal Adaptogens
A good example of this is seen with the immune system-enhancing mushroom known as maitake. Researchers studied several polysaccharide fractions and claimed that one specific fraction was the most active. However, when they combined the fraction with an extract of the whole mushroom, the activity was increased by more than 80 percent. A reductionist pharmacological way of looking at herbs often doesn't work.
Another example of this problem comes from German research on hawthorn, an herb used as a nerve and cardiovascular tonic. |
Our conclusion is that various active constituents found in herbal adaptogens work to stimulate the neuroendocrine and immune systems via multiple metabolic pathways. They affect the brain, nerves, endocrine glands (pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, thymus, pineal, pancreas, ovaries, and testes), and immune system by helping re-regulate, normalize, and enhance function. There are multiple theories as to what is occurring, and even scientists are unsure. We will leave it to them to unlock the mystery of how these substances work. |
We will then examine the ancient herbal traditions of India and China.
MODERN HISTORY-RUSSIA
The modern history of adaptogens began in the late 1940s. The former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) assigned the Soviet Academy of Science to develop a product that increased the performance of their elite personnel, which included athletes, military personnel, political officers, and chess players, while adhering to strict health guidelines. |
The Ministry of Health Care of USSR formed a special commercial organization, MedExport, to be in charge of exporting herbal remedies. After the exporting began in 1969, Brekhman, as a representative of MedExport, traveled all over the world to promote Russian adaptogens. As a result of such efforts, the popularity of these herbs, and especially eleuthero, has increased in England, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and the United States.
Before passing away in 1994, Brekhman formulated a product known as Prime One. |
TRADITIONAL herbal MEDICINE
Traditional systems of medicine such as ayurveda from India, traditional Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine, Greco-Arabic medicine (Unani-Tibb), Eclectic medicine, and kampo from Japan have a long and impressive history of effectiveness. Lesser-known traditions, including Physiomedicalism and Native American, African, and Siddha (Sri Lankan) medicine, also contribute a wealth of knowledge and experience that we can glean. |

Treatment was naturopathic and herbal. Patients receiving homoeopathy and acupuncture did not do as well as those receiving herbs.
Best results with herbs were: Liquorice (lg powder thrice daily); St John's Wort (Yerba prima tablets, 3, on two days a week only). Patients reported a great increase in the sense of well-being on St John's Wort. An equivalent dose of fresh plant tincture would be 10ml. The tincture should be of a good red colour. The College did not use Echinacea, which would stimulate the central immune system and which would therefore be contra-indicated. |

Naturopathic doctors who once prescribed laetrile for cancer patients, for example, have been run out of the country or arrested. herbal product companies have been censored to such a degree that none dare tell the truth about the anti-cancer effects of their own products, and even broccoli growers and marketers are scared into remaining silent about the remarkable, scientifically-proven anti-cancer effects of broccoli.
In other words, if you want to know what the cancer industry supports or attacks, just check to see which list it's on. |

Burt's herbal Defense Ointment ($8 for 3.2 ounces) contains some fragrant oils and plant extracts that can be irritating to skin, but is primarily zinc oxide, almond oil, and beeswax. It isn't something you'd want to use routinely, and for rhose occasions when a protective ointment is needed, plain Desitin is preferred to this product.

I am a big one for using herbal poultices for spider bites and anything that gets into your skin. You have to get it out.
We use charcoal and bentonite clay and slippery elm bark, and recently we have added chlorella into that poultice basic formula. Of course the chlorella with the cell wall is going to pull heavy metals and toxins out.
With those growth factors that are in there, you are going to stimulate the regeneration and healing in the local area. It is a little bit expensive now. |
