For years scientists believed that only two constituents in valerian, valepotriates and bornyl esters, produced its sedative effect. But one more recent Italian study notes that other chemicals in this herb, valeranone and kessyl esters, also contribute to its sleep-inducing effectiveness. The researchers concluded that the sedative effect of valerian comes from the actions of its many different constituents working in harmony with each other.

Our patient Nancy's thirty-five pounds of excess weight were the result of her low mood—she would eat to comfort herself—and her fat cravings. Substituting low-fat choline-rich foods at every meal eliminated her cravings and improved her mood.

These formulations represented a much higher profit margin than unpatentable herbal concentrates. Since cannabis was useful for so many ailments, eliminating it as a medical option would force people to use proprietary formulas rather than the cheaper herbal medicines.

Pharmacognosy and its history: people, plants and natural products
The history of pharmacy was for centuries identical with the history of pharmacognosy, or the study of materia medica, which were obtained from natural sources -mostly plants, but also minerals, animals and fungi. |

The respiratory system
Minor common disorders of the respiratory system can often be successfully treated with phytotherapy and it can be helpful as a supportive measure in more serious diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia. For infections, antibiotic therapy may be needed and although most antibiotics are natural products, their study is a separate issue and will not be dealt with here. |
In 1983, it was estimated that about 40% of Japanese clinicians were writing Kampo herbal prescriptions and today's research in Japan and Korea continues to confirm the validity of many of its remedies (Takemi et al 1985).
The European Middle Ages and Arabia
After the conquest of the southern part of the Roman Empire by Arab troops, Greek medical texts were translated into Arabic and adapted to the needs of the Arabs. Many of the Greek texts survived only in Arab transcripts. Ibn Sina, or Avicenna from Afshana (980-1037), wrote a monumental treatise Qdnunfi'l tibb ('Canon of medicine'; ca. |
Previously there had been two lines of practice: the herbal traditions of the monasteries and the popular tradition, which remains practically unknown. Books in European languages made scholastic information much more widely available and it seems that the literate population was eager to learn about these medicopharma-ceutical practices. These new books became the driving force of European 'phytotherapy', which developed rapidly over the next centuries.
The trade in botanical drugs increased during this period. |

That fiber and herbal cannabis are distinct varieties was shown in a photograph in Dewey's 1913 USDA Yearbook chapter on hemp.117 Wright understood the varietal differences which he characterized in 1918: "There are three fairly distinct types of hemp: that grown for fiber, that for birdseed and oil, and that for drugs."118 herbal and oilseed types are poor fiber producers.119 As with flax, attempts to use one type for the other purpose requires a compromise of quality. The flax community well understood this concept. In 1936, A. C. |

It was John Hoxsey, a horse breeder in Illinois, who developed the herbal remedy in the mid-1800s. According to the story as Harry told it, in 1840 his great-grandfather John had a stallion that was expected to die as a result of having developed a cancerous lesion on its leg. This horse had been one of John's favorites, so when the horse had to be put out to pasture, he kept an eye on it. He noticed that the horse exhibited atypical behavior by grazing primarily on one clump of shrubs and flowering plants. |
Finding herbal sources today that use good quality herbs and prepare the herbs optimally is the biggest concern. Since it is difficult to be sure of the efficacy of any particular version of Essiac, it might be best to use it in conjunction with another recovery approach with which Essiac tea is compatible. The only approach I know of that is definitely not compatible with Essiac, is Proto-cel. But for all other alternative cancer approaches, Essiac tea can be of great supportive value. |
For example, if a person uses Protocel while taking high doses of vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, selenium, or other nutritional or herbal supplements that can interfere with Protocel's process, then the formula may not be able to work to its fullest extent. (Be sure to review the lists of supplements and herbs to avoid.)
Last but not least, some people believe that cancer patients who have high levels of mercury or other heavy metal toxicity may exprience more difficulty recovering from their cancer using Protocel. |
So quite a few people prefer to stay away from supplemental CoQ10, vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, and cancer-fighting herbal mixtures altogether until they are cancer-free —just to be on the safe side.
If a person eats a healthy, well-balanced diet while using Protocel, the intake of the above nutrients in their natural food form will usually not be enough to interfere with the formula's effectiveness. Many cancer patients have proven this to be true time and again. However, it is recommended to keep the ingestion of those fruits that are very high in vitamin C to a minimum. |

There may have been other herbs she was originally told about, too, but these are the four she supposedly ended up using. Nurse Caisse was told that when blended and brewed together in a certain way, these herbs had more curative power than any of the four herbs individually had. |

Combinations of these ingredients can definitely suppress appetite, give you the jitters, and maybe, just maybe, burn a few extra calories.
Some "fat burners" include a mix of carnitine and chromium (both of which are discussed in chapter 4). They almost never contain the best form of carnitine (tartrate) and rarely contain more than 500 milligrams (most nutritionists think the minimum amount necessary to impact fat burning in an overweight person is 1,500 milligrams). |
The other pair of ingredients often found in these formulas are tyrosine, an amino acid helpful for improving mood, and phenylalanine, an essential amino acid that can be converted into tyrosine. Both of these are precursors to dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel peppy and bright. Tyrosine is needed for the making of thyroid hormone, but it is highly unlikely that tyrosine will boost low thyroid, even though some supplement makers claim it does.
The important thing is to read the ingredients on the labels of the products you are considering. |

These sources state that Caisse only allowed Memorial Sloan-Kettering to study one of the herbal ingredients —the sheep's sorrel. Dr. Glum states that Dr. Chester Stock at MSK did the research and discovered that the sheep's sorrel did have powerful anti-cancer properties. Glum also claims that this information was withheld from the American public, but was given to the Canadian Ministry of Health and Welfare. After receiving this information, rather than supporting the use of Essiac for cancer, the Canadian government immediately banned the sale and distribution of the sheep sorrel herb. |

Euphrasia (eyebright) has a well-deserved reputation in both homeopathic and herbal traditions for helping people with eye troubles. Euphrasia conjunctivitis is characterized by the copious flow of acrid, watery tears that burn the face. With time the discharge may become thick and mucous but never opaque or yellow-green. Often the eyes feel dry or as though there is dust or sand in them. The eyes and often the lids (especially the margins) are very red. There may be accompanying nasal drainage (see "Colds and Coughs"). |
Later he tested various herbs used in European folk medicine, and other homeopaths have since "proven" herbal medicines of many regions, and many other mineral- and animal-derived substances.
The homeopathic provings provide the experimental basis for learning what symptoms a substance causes and thus, according to the law of similars, what it cures. The provings allow the practitioner to individualize the choice of a medicine according to the totality of the patient's symptoms. |

A great remedy for an encroaching sinus infection is to rinse the sinuses with a salt water solution (1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda per 1 cup of water). This remedy takes some discipline and focus, and it's not recommended for most children. You need to put the salt water solution in the palm of your hand or a clean, wide container such as a wide, short water glass. |

This was a very coordinated effort to get people to believe that a natural herbal supplement could be dangerous. This campaign is designed to encourage Congress to ban more natural remedies, as well as require supplements as harmless as basic vitamins and minerals to be classified as drugs and be sold by prescription and manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry. This is being touted under the guise of safety. Safety has nothing to do with it. Why?

In America, pharmaceutical giants are buying vitamin, mineral, herbal, and homeopathic companies. Currently there are two products being marketed on television. The ads look eerily similar to drug ads. The packaging of the products makes them appear to be drugs. But in this instance, they are not drugs at all. They are natural products being manufactured and sold by the pharmaceutical industry at outrageous prices, because it's the pharmaceutical industry, these ads are allowed to run. |
