Herbal plants are part of the process of evolving "consciousness," and many of their identifications as healing plants were derived through psychic vision experiences, corroborated through actual healing over many centuries. Their history of providing physical health and simply wholistic magical protection from ailments, attest to their divine value and importance in the life of comen. |

Although electron microscopy studies suggest that soy saponins do less damage to cell membranes than herbal varieties and are not dose dependent,20 the cholesterol-binding mechanism that causes the damage gets credit for lowering blood and liver cholesterol and preventing and reversing colon cancer.21
CHOLESTEROL DOWNER
Saponins do lower cholesterol. Their ability to bind with cholesterol and with bile decreases absorption by the intestines and increases elimination in the feces.2225 However soy protein rat feed has sometimes been found to greatly suppress the effects of soy saponins. |

V Ivy (Hedera helix). Compounds known as saponins, which are found in ivy leaves, are active against several bacteria and fungi that cause skin problems. Commission E endorses using ivy to treat bronchitis, which is an indication of the herb's safety.
Ivy has an extensive folkloric reputation for treating dermatitis. If I had a skin problem, I would chop some leaves in a blender and apply the paste directly to the affected area. |

Neurological Disorders
OUR BRAINS ARE THE MOST important part of our bodies—they make us who and what we are. They control everything we do and say, and their health is fundamental to our survival. Unfortunately the massive recent escalation of brain-related health problems suggests that there is something about modern living that has quite literally poisoned our minds.
In the past, scientists have tried to explain this massive increase in disease by blaming an aging population. |

Practitioners of Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, India's traditional healing system, often prescribe herbal formulas. Many of the microdose medicines used in homeopathy come from plants. In fact, it was experiments with cinchona bark—the first effective treatment for malaria—that laid the groundwork for the development of homeopathy. Plants also provide the basis for Western herbal medicine, a cross-cultural blend of age-old European, Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and Native American herbal traditions. |

Another important type of chromatography frequently used to analyze herbal products is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Gas chromatography is very similar to HPLC, in that the sample flows with the mobile phase through a tube. However, in GC, the tube is extremely narrow and long, and its walls are coated with a gel that functions as the stationary phase. The mobile phase is helium gas

The generally accepted plan of treating the eye as an independent and isolated organ should be abandoned ... on account of the influence exerted by remote structures."

Infuse 1 tsp of the combined herbs per cup of water for 5-10 minutes and drink. Add a little honey to sweeten if needed. This blend of herbs is suitable for children and can be used daily to treat hyperactivity. The formula is mildly sedating, nourishing, reduces spasms, soothes digestion, and calms the spirit, especially at times of stress.

In Ayurvedic tradition, an herbal remedy prepared principally from vine extracts, Darakchasava, has been used for millennia as a cardiac tonic. Given the omnipresence of wine in European and Mediterranean culture, it is rather ironic that the first clues as to the beneficial role played by resveratrol in disease prevention come once again from the East. More interestingly, the societies in which wine is practically absent have still managed to identify and use preparations rich in resveratrol to treat cardiac and circulatory disorders. |

For years scientists believed that only two constituents in valerian, valepotriates and bornyl esters, produced its sedative effect. But one more recent Italian study notes that other chemicals in this herb, valeranone and kessyl esters, also contribute to its sleep-inducing effectiveness. The researchers concluded that the sedative effect of valerian comes from the actions of its many different constituents working in harmony with each other.

Due to the success of this naturopathic treatment in alleviating Julie's diabetes and secondary complications, I received a grant to conduct a 15-month clinical trial for the use of herbal medicine in the treatment of blood sugar metabolism. The results of the study showed that 88% of patients with hyperglycemia were able to lower the blood sugar by one third, while at the same time the patient who had too much insulin was able to lower it by 25%, and patients with reactive hypoglycemia had a 44% decrease in hypoglycemic symptoms. |

Albuterol is a clinically important bronchodilator used to treat asthma patients when they have acute attacks. |
Conditions have been worked out for many of the major herbal drugs so that one can determine whether the active ingredient is present and, in some cases, whether certain adulterants or undesirable compounds are present. Recall that in order to visualize the spots in a TLC experiment, one often views the plate under ultraviolet light. This is actually a form of spectroscopy; UV light is a particular set of wavelengths, and the compounds are absorbing some of the light that hits them, giving rise to various colors. |

Thus, the first book on Chinese materia medica is named after him, the herbal Classics of the Divine Plowman. The book is believed to have been written between the first century B.C. and the first century A.D. It represents a systematic account of all knowledge related to the application of drugs in that period in Chinese history. Unfortunately, the original text was lost long ago and what is available today is a script assembled during the Ming and Qing dynasties from quotations contained in many other classics. |
The drugs have spread throughout China and have been regarded as the main component of the Chinese herbal medicines. About 500 items are commonly used in Chinese traditional medicines, of which Panax ginseng, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and Rheum palmatum are well known.
National Minorities Drugs
National minorities drugs (minzuyao) are used by doctors of different national minorities, of which Tibetan, Mongolian, Uygur, and Tai are the most important. These drugs are all closely connected with Chinese traditional medicine but are characterized by factors of nationality and locality. |

Lavender oil (from Lavandula angustifolia) is an ancient herbal remedy with antiseptic and sedative properties. One of the main components responsible for improving sleep is linalool, which is found in high concentration in the oil. Eucalyptus oil, used in cough drops, contains a high percentage of 1,8-cineole, which is believed to be responsible for the expectorant and cough-suppressing activities of the oil. Peppermint oil (from Mentha x piperita) has many of the same properties and is also useful in settling an upset stomach. Its main component is menthol. Sage species (Salvia spp. |
