Every single one of these diseases is preventable through nutrition, through herbal supplements, through lifestyle changes, and through the avoidance of toxic ingredients in the food supply like hydrogenated oils and refined sugars.
Every person I talked to backed this up. They said we do not need to live in this kind of society, as we have the technology, the products, and the knowledge available right now. Right now, people can go out and get things that can prevent all of these diseases, if not outright reverse many of them. |

You'll notice that the FDA only applies this standard to prescription drugs; never to nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, Chinese medicine or anything in the world of alternative medicine. The FDA will argue that drugs that are killing tens of thousands of Americans should be kept on the market because they have some benefit, but when it comes to a natural remedy or a medicinal herb, the FDA will bend over backwards to argue the exact opposite.
It's never about the benefits versus the risks in the case of herbs. |

I'd be floored, and I'd rave endlessly about General Mills if they went straight to natural herbal sweeteners.
Of course, to do that, the FDA has to give up protecting the Nutrasweet monopoly and actually legalize stevia as a safe food ingredient, and that's another story altogether. It seems to take an act of God just to get the FDA to do anything for the public good these days, so don't expect miracles any time soon on this front. |

In addition, if we have to, there are some natural herbal therapies that can be used to help decrease their cholesterol levels. I always try first to do it with diet and nutrition, and then use the herbs.
Mike: That's interesting. Do you find that patients are able to integrate the diet and nutritional advice?
Dr. Pizzorno: Well, not everybody's willing to do that, but I admit, I see a skewed population. And that is, if people come to see me, and come to see naturopathic doctors, in general they know what to expect -- they know they're not just going to get a pill. |

In fact, virtually all the healing arts -- acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, Ayurvedic herbs, etc. -- have all been "dumbed down" as they were introduced to western cultures. The teaching of alternative medical therapies in this country is far too technical, and it lacks any real art. Some people are taught that acupuncture is basically a system of points that correspond to certain symptoms: put a needle on the P6 for this problem, or Liver 3 for that problem, and so on. And that's all hogwash. |
Patients should be taught to use herbal medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic care, nutritional supplements and naturopathic advice in conjunction with their own good decisions about health. That's where herbs are truly powerful and can, indeed, help a person overcome practically any disease: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, you name it.
Similarly, acupuncture is much more than just something to stop nausea after chemotherapy (a role to which organized medicine would love to relegate the therapy). |

It has gone out of its way to bury evidence proving that these drugs are dangerous and yet at the same time discredit nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, vitamins and other natural strategies for preventing chronic disease and boosting health. In fact, the whole environment at the Fraud and Drug Administration is that of oppression... and suppression of scientific evidence. 21% of the scientists surveyed felt that the work environment at the FDA offered little or no room for dissent. Half of those surveyed said that scientific dissent was allowed only "to some extent. |

What we would rather do is look at why is that person's immune system not working the way it's supposed to, and look at what diet, herbal, lifestyle changes they need so that their immune system will work properly, and not only will that current infection go away, but they'll have less chance of infections in the future.
Mike: It sounds like it's an approach that has a lot of faith in nature and faith in the human body to heal itself.
Dr. Pizzorno: Very much so. We in naturopathic medicine have this theme called vis medicatrix naturae which is "the healing power of nature. |

Balsam also has a potent, but pleasant, herbal fragrance. Why then has balsam fallen out of the limelight? Despite balsam's positive attributes, it has overwhelming negative points—specifically, it makes hair feel sticky, and, because it builds up, can make hair brittle. It is best avoided in any hair-care formulation.
Thickeners and emulsifiers are the ingredients responsible for the consistency of all hair-care products. Thickeners also function as emollients in hair-care products, but primarily they help produce the feel and texture of the formulation. |
Is Clairol's Hydrience better for hair than Clairol's Ultress, and does Clairol's herbal Essences contain plant extracts that help hair, and if so, why aren't they in Clairol's other hair-dye products?
To make matters worse, and supposedly to help us understand what kind of hair dye we are purchasing and how long it will last, the companies have created phrases like "harmonizing color," "tone-on-tone," "oxidation" and "nonoxidation," "permanent" versus "intermediate" or "midcolor," or "level 2" and "demi color"—but what does any of that mean? First, there is a whole class of foods and food ingredients you have to avoid to protect your nervous system (ingredients that I call "metabolic disruptors"), and then there is a whole other group of nutritional supplements and herbal supplements that can enhance brain function.
Let's go through these quickly. On the things to avoid list, you certainly want to avoid hydrogenated oils. Those are described as brain poison, and they're terrible for the nervous system. |

I also give a cautious recommendation to Sambucol, made from black elderberries, although this is a single-ingredient solution and not as powerful, in my view, as the herbal combination products listed above. Sambucol is also typically sweetened with glucose syrup or other sweeteners that I definitely do not recommend. And yet its antiviral capability is well documented, so it does quality as a proven antiviral supplement. |

You're going to have to fend for yourself, and to do that, you'd better have a stockpile of herbal medicine ready at your side. You'd better have purchased it well ahead of time, and you had better be prepared to take it.
Take responsibility for your own bird flu prevention
This is my opinion. Conventional medicine and medical authorities strongly disagree. My lawyers always tell me to say, "Check with your doctor. Check with your qualified health practitioner before you do anything." So, you'd better check with them before you do anything about your health. |

A Word about herbal Remedies
It is unclear why herbal remedies are often referred to as "alternative" medicines. When you consider that about 25 percent of all medicines prescribed today were derived from plants or plant products, there is nothing alternative about them. In the 1700s, the plant foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) was used in herbal teas to treat dropsy (heart failure). The active ingredient in foxglove (digitalis) is now given in pure form and is a standard therapy for those who suffer from heart disease. |

It says, "Make sure you keep those people ignorant about antiviral herbs; we couldn't give any credence to herbal medicine, because that might hurt the profits of vaccine companies. That might hurt the profits from the sale of the Tamiflu. It might discredit conventional medicine if we told people the truth. So, we've got to keep people in the dark."
I have no doubt that somewhere along the line in this whole decision process for the national strategy for pandemic influenza somebody said, "Better not mention herbs; keep people in the dark on that one. We don't want anybody to know about that. |

Mike: I'm reminded of some of the shampoos that you can find at Wal-Mart, like herbal Essences Shampoo. You look at it, and where are the herbs?
Bronner: Exactly, and it's almost worse (than) what's happening in the natural channel because at least at Wal-Mart, the consumer doesn't necessarily care whether there are herbs. But at health food stores, consumers are motivated to support organics. They want organics. It's that much worse, then, to see this deceit, deception or fraud going on. A lot of people complain about the Clairol "Organic and Orgasm" ad, and yes, that's not great. |

With most other herbal companies, you have to use a quarter to one-half teaspoon per 10 or 20 pounds of body weight. That is a lot more product to try and get into the body. Now, when you're putting a lot more product into the body, the body has to digest and utilize that in order to extract the therapeutic ingredient. A lot of energy goes into the digestion and assimilation, and there is not much more energy left over for applying the therapeutic agent to healing.
That is what is different about our products. Because they are concentrated, they work very quickly. |
Newman: I guarantee you that every drug that dog was on could have been taken care of by an herbal supplement and some nutritional augmentation.
Mike: So, is there some place our readers can go to find out what herbs you have? Does your website have a list?
Newman: The website (www.Azmira.com) has a list of our products, and they can educate themselves about our products and what our products do. They can call the product support help line. That's 520-886-1727. There, they can get educated about their pet's specific needs. |

Consequently, the FDA, which is out there to protect Big Pharma, has every reason to outlaw herbal remedies. That alone will boost the sales of prescription drugs.
The only real regulatory action the FDA is taking on Vioxx, Bextra and other Cox-2 inhibitor drugs is the requirement of a black box warning on the drugs. This is supposed to be a big deal, but in fact it means little to nothing. This is just a bigger print size of the same warning that's been found in the small fine print of the drug for years. Doctors routinely ignore this information. Patients almost never see it. |

So, it didn't matter what the homeopathic remedy or herbal remedies were. They were fighting this putrefied diet.
Mike: Sure, because if you're going to poison your pet with these pet foods...
Newman: That's exactly what we're doing: Poisoning our pets. Ethoxiquin is a common stabilizer in pet food. It is a rubber and lethal herbicide. It is two chemical compositions away from Agent Orange. So, it does the same thing Agent Orange does when you spray it on the plants. It dries up the root system of the plants and the plants die. |

When an outbreak is actually reported in the mainstream media, this lack of preparedness will inevitably lead to panic runs on face masks, antiviral medicines (including herbal tinctures), and even basic supplies like water and sleeping bags (to keep warm when the heat is gone). The very best antiviral medicines that I recommend in the book -- ones that are far more effective than Tamiflu at killing various viral strains -- will be rapidly sold out. During a bird flu outbreak, these will probably be selling on eBay for $250 a bottle. |

Make no mistake: the bird flu "panic" is going to bring out a bunch of crooks and hucksters in the herbal supplement market, and there will be con artists selling counterfeit antiviral products just like you see people in the weight loss industry selling bogus hoodia gordonii. That's why I strongly encourage you to stick with companies and products you can trust.
So, to be detailed, my current top-recommended antiviral product is:
Jon Barron's Baseline of Health Formula "Super ViraGon": (current price is $39.95 for one bottle, or $100 for five) http://www.baselinenutritionals. |
I've actually tasted several of his products (like his Echinacea tincture), and I can tell you that these are the strongest herbal tinctures I've ever experienced. Compared to these, a lot of the standard health food store tinctures taste like water. Echinacea tincture, for example, should turn your tongue NUMB for a few minutes (and Jon Barron's does). This Super ViraGon product tastes like a sweet garlic explosion, and it will not only fight viruses, it also contains ingredients that are well proven to lower cholesterol, boost circulation, enhance cardiovascular health, and much more. |

This is an agency that has attempted again and again to discredit Chinese medicine, nutritional supplements, herbal medicine and anything that would compete with prescription drugs. It has sought to outlaw these natural substances and herbs that have been proven healers for literally 2,000 years in the history of medicine. This is the FDA that has put drug profits first, and public safety last, time and time again.

Ming-Yi Bie-Lu, compiled by Tao Hong-Jing (452-536 A.D.), came next to be the most important classical writings on Chinese materia medica as the annotation to Shennong Herbs. It specialized in the study of herbs during the Liang dynasty. Tao Hong-Jing expounded Shennong Herbs on one hand, and supplemented it with 365 additional medicinal substances on the other. This book doubled the list of known drugs to 730. |
