A Digestive Aid
The next time your stomach sends out a postprandial SOS, try sipping a cup of basil tea. This herb has a reputation for easing a variety of digestive disorders, especially gas.
No one's sure exactly why basil appears to soothe stomach upsets. One possible explanation is a compound called eugenol. This compound, which is found in basil, has been shown to help ease muscle spasms. This could explain why basil appears to help ease gas and stomach cramps.

Take a 40-milligram capsule 3 times a day for 1 -2 months.

Even though parsley is best known as a culinary herb, you'll get more of its healing benefits by using it as a main ingredient. The Lebanese salad called tabbouleh, for example, typically calls for up to 1 cup of chopped fresh parsley. Or you can add half a bunch to a garden salad. Using whole sprigs will provide a pleasant texture, along with a celerylike flavor. Italian flat-leaf parsley has a stronger flavor than curly parsley.
Store it well. Since it's easier to store dried parsley than fresh, most cooks have a small bag or bottle stored in the kitchen pantry. |

Scientific interest in feverfew began when a 1983 survey found that seventy percent of 270 migraine sufferers who had eaten feverfew daily for prolonged periods claimed that the herb decreased the frequency and/or intensity of their attacks.'3 Many of these patients had been unresponsive to orthodox medicines. This survey prompted several clinical investigations of the therapeutic and preventive effects of feverfew in the treatment of migraine.74-77

Calendula This herb is known to have antibacterial and wound-healing abilities. For irritated eyes or itching caused by allergies, make a compress by adding calendula to hot water. Allow the water to cool and then dip a cotton cloth in the solution and hold over the irritated eye. cucumber Ten minutes with a fresh cucumber slice over each eyelid tones the membranes, and cools and soothes tired eyes.

But, use this herb with caution — ephedrine is an extremely powerful stimulant, and long-term use can be harmful. It should never be used by pregnant women or by people with elevated blood pressure.

Native American Indians used this helpful herb to treat skin problems like acne and boils. They applied an echinacea tincture directly on the blemishes. essential oils Dab pure essential oil of lavender or castor oil directly on blemishes. honey Warm honey will help bring spots to a head, and you can get the job done quicker if you add a little wheat germ. Dab each blemish at night and in the morning, leaving the preparation on for 15 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.

Ephedra, or ma huang, is a potent anti-allergic herb. It contains alkaloids that help soothe bronchial spasms, making it effective against asthma.
CAUTION: Ephedra should never be used by pregnant women or people with high blood pressure. eucalyptus Australians ease congestion by breathing in eucalyptus vapors. To try this, put the leaves into a large pot of boiling water, and boil them for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and, with a towel draped over your head, breathe in the steam. You can also add a few drops of lemon balm or chamomile oil. All of these will soothe mucous membranes. |

Phyllanthus amarus
Phyllanthus amarus is an Asian herb with a long history of use in treating liver disorders. A preliminary report in 1988 demonstrated that fifty-nine percent of patients with hepatitis B had lost the hepatitis B surface antigen when tested fifteen to twenty days after treatment with a preparation of Phyllanthus amarus (200 mg of the dried, powdered, sterilized plant in capsules three times per day).29 This report was met with a great deal of excitement. In this double-blind study only one in twenty-three (four percent) of the placebo-treated controls tested negative. |

The usual dose of the Panax herb is one capsule three times a day, or as tea (one cup a day is what most ginseng devotees drink), or 1 or 2 teaspoons in water taken on an empty stomach. Ginseng can make you nervous or jittery, so don't take it at bedtime. Avoid it too if you have high blood pressure or suffer from chronic headaches because ginseng has been known to aggravate both. Be aware that it can also cause vaginal bleeding, especially if you're menopausal. If this occurs, report it to your doctor. |

Sesame Oil
Sesame oil comes from an annual herb (Sesamutn indicum). The plant is a warm weather plant that grows from the tropics to warm temperate regions. The major producing countries are China, India, Sudan, and Mexico. The seed is 40 to 60 percent oil and is used directly for food purposes when it is cold pressed. The oil is also recovered by combined expeller and solvent extraction. Sesame paste is a popular food in the lands along the eastern Mediterranean. |

The first is a common wild plant and the second a popular garden herb found throughout the British Isles.
This is what that ancient volume had to say about the first common weed in the olde English in prevalent use then. "Pellitory of the wall boyled, and the decoction of it drunken, helpeth such as are vexed with an old cough, the gravell and stone, in bothe man and beaste. |
It draws its strength from the essential oils contained in tiny glands on the outside or deep within the roots, wood, leaves, flowers, or fruit of an herb. This potent, aromatic substance is a concentration of the plant's own "life force."
In aromatherapy, the inhalation, external application, and baths are the chief ways in which such essential oils may enter a human or animal physical system. The oils themselves are highly volatile, evaporating readily on exposure to air. And when inhaled they may enter the body through the olfactory mechanisms of man or beast. |
But just because yucca is a tremendous herb doesn't mean an animal should receive it every day. My general recommendation is that a pet receive the emptied contents from two capsules of yucca (about one teaspoon) every other day and then only in just one meal. Adding a complete B vitamin of one-half teaspoon brewer's yeast with this works even better.
Finally, I prescribe Rex Wheat Germ Oil to all creatures, both great and small, two-legged as well as four-legged. Cats and small dogs get one-half teaspoon every day while larger dogs receive one tablespoon. |

During the elimination stage, it's important to provide adequate fluid to the patient. herb teas, used either for their diaphoretic or therapeutic effects, are most appropriate.
This phase may last up to an hour. The treatment should be ended quickly if the patient begins to feel chilled or becomes uncomfortable.
The treatment ends by quickly removing the patient from the pack, frictioning the skin briskly with a dry towel, and having the patient dress. As this is often an intensive treatment, it should be followed with rest or appropriate activity. |

Menstrual Cramps
Cramps that occur before, during, and sometimes after a menstrual period. They can cause lower abdominal pain, along with referred pain to the lower back and thighs. Painful cramping can be accompanied by overall fatigue, bloating, irritability, diarrhea, and other symptoms.

Boswellia serrata
Another herb historically used in the treatment of osteoarthritis is Boswellia serrata, a large branching tree native to India. Boswellia yields an exudative gum resin known as salai guggul. Although salai guggul has been used for centuries, newer preparations concentrated for the active components (bos-wellic acids) are giving better results.
Boswellic acid extracts have demonstrated anti-arthritic effects in a variety of animal models. |

Vi pound very firm tofu, cut into 1 -inch cubes
1 tablespoon Spike, Schilling Garlic and herb, or other seasoning mix
2 tomatoes, cut into wedges Preheat the oven to 500°F.
Prepare the vegetables as directed and mix them with the tofu cubes. Divide between two 9x13-inch baking dishes and sprinkle wirh the seasoning. Toss to mix, then spread evenly in the dishes. Bake until the vegetables are tender and the edges just begin to darken, 15 to 20 minutes.
