Ginkgo and Stroke Recovery
The evidence is still preliminary, but research suggests that Ginkgo biloba, an herb that's received a lot of attention for its role in preventing memory loss, also may play a role in helping people recover from strokes.
Ginkgo reduces the tendency of platelets to form clots. It essentially makes blood "thinner" and helps increase circulation in the brain. It also appears to strengthen blood vessels, which reduces the risk of bleeding.
Ginkgo isn't a replacement for conventional stroke therapies, but it may be helpful as pan of an overall treatment plan. |

Although most showed no effect, three spices and one herb tripled insulin activity: cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and bay leaves. Cinnamon was the most potent.
Only a little cinnamon, such as the small amounts sprinkled on toast, can stimulate insulin activity, he says. A dash of cinnamon on any number of appropriate foods may help keep blood sugar in check.

Most of us have also heard of the potential protective effect of the herb ginkgo biloba against dementia. It's thought to decrease free-radical damage to the brain and increase the flow of blood to vital areas responsible for memory. Scientists have found support in several randomized, protective studies and ginkgo is already on the German Commission E list as a safe treatment for dementia. Interestingly, ginkgo nuts have been a common food in Japan for centuries and are a common find in the typical Japanese pantry. |

One of the most interesting aspects of this herb is that it allows the body to assimilate more oxygen. A study in China for altitude sickness found that it prevented the symptoms in 97.5 percent of 238 soldiers. In the control group, 80.31 percent experienced altitude sickness.66 This may be a reason I've seen debilitated pets heal quickly. Reishi is a good adjunct to most chronic diseases and is quite safe.

Dairy Products
The food pyramid calls for two to three servings daily of dairy products, which include milk, yogurt, and cheese. A standard serving of milk is considered eight ounces of milk or yogurt or one-and-one-half ounces of cheese. One-quarter cup of a wet cheese like cottage cheese also constitutes one dairy serving. One slice of cheese, about the size of a computer disk, equals one serving.
Skim milk or 1-percent-fat products are the most desirable for your health. |
