When Senna becomes highly concentrated in the organs or bloodstream, through over-consumption by whatever means, this herb can lead to the recipient developing a variety of health problems. Senna seems to primarily affect body systems related to the blood and/or natural cellular functions but can also severely damage the liver. |

Boneset leaf is a Native American herb that gets its name from the disease it was used to remedy, an epidemic flu so strong that the muscle contractions it caused broke people's bones ("breakbone fever"). This tea would relax the contractions. It's a cooling upper-respiratory remedy, eases aches and pains, lowers fever, and is antiviral, so it's ideal for cold and flu. While it was trendy in the past and is still widely available, it hasn't yet been "rediscovered" and is quite economical. Boneset can be taken at a dose of 1 to 2 ounces as tea daily for acute conditions. |
This Ayurvedic herb is antibacterial, not antiviral, so it won't help you attack cold or flu "bugs" directly, but it may help prevent secondary bacterial infections (such as sinus). Mote importantly, it is pungent, astringent, and warming, thus controlling kapha energy (cold, wet, mucusy). An excellent warming and drying cold relief solution from Ayurveda is bayberry combined with cinnamon and ginger.
SYMPTOM SOOTHERS
The following will help relieve specific, acute symptoms, regardless of the type of infection. |
However, this herb also has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis properties. According to Ayurvedic doctor Virender Sodhi, M.D., ashwaganda's high steroid content produces more potent action than hydrocortisone in rats and also produces results comparable to the effects of the drugs phenylbutazone and aspirin (without the immunosuppression and intestinal irritation). |

John's Wort, lemon balm herb and many others that have powerful antiviral properties.
My impression of the statements from governments around the world on bird flu is that they are basically designed to calm people down and are largely false statements. I fail to see how any country can be stocking up on a vaccine that doesn't even exist. And those who say they're stockpiling Tamiflu can't possibly have enough Tamiflu to treat any reasonable percentage of the population for very long. They would run out in less than a month, leaving everybody on their own. |

Experiments done on rabbits demonstrated that an extract of the herb would substantially reduce blood sugar without any toxic side effects.
Clinical Applications: Devil's club is used for arthritis, rheumatism, stomach pains, constipation, and especially for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. The bark can be burnt and applied to cuts. A paste can be made out of the root powder and applied as a poultice to decrease pain and swelling from insect bites and stings.
Dose: 1-2 g t.i.d.
Contraindications: None known. |
Hemoglobin and handgrip strength increased significantly in the combined herb group compared to controls.
In another clinical trial, 3 g per day of root powder was given to 101 healthy males aged 50 to 59 years. All subjects showed significant increases in hemoglobin and red blood cell count along with improvements in hair melanin, seated posture and reports of sexual performance.37

John’s Wort is a natural medicinal herb that has been used safely and effectively by cultures throughout the world for thousands of years. So with the findings of this study, we once again see a much better alternative for treating depression than prescription drugs
We also learned recently that St. John’s Wort is only one of many natural treatments for severe depression. A diet of select foods high in omega-3 fatty acids offers good, strong nutrition normally lacking in the American diet, and also aids in treating depression much more effectively than prescription drugs. |

There is no food, no exercise, and no herb that will cause your body to remove fat in one place versus another.
If you want to reduce body fat, you need to start consuming fewer calories than you expend on a daily basis. In other words, have a calorie deficit. In time, your body will start converting fat into useable energy, and by doing so, fat stores will begin to vanish across your body. But they won't just magically disappear from one particular place.
If you are a male, abdominal fat is probably the last fat that will disappear from your body. |

Can you imagine the front-page headlines if somebody found out that an herb killed 60,000 people? But when it's a drug, the newspapers just called it an "unintended side effect."
Where are the stories about the abuse of Ritalin by our nation's schoolchildren? Where are the stories about how our food supply is promoting chronic disease? Where are the stories about organized medicine being the number one cause of death in this country, now responsible for more than 750,000 American deaths each year? |

Then, during World War II, the Dutch physician F. E. Revers, M.D., saw a small-town pharmacist prepare a licorice paste for townspeople suffering from stomach ulcers. Dr. Revers could not help trying licorice with a few of his own patients, and he found that it worked just fine. In at least half the patients he tested this paste on, the ulcers were nearly gone within a month. The only real problem that he encountered was that some of his patients developed water retention. In the meantime, doctors have also found that licorice sometimes increases high blood pressure. |

And out of all of that research, the most astounding thing I've learned is not about one particular herb, or the healing effects of some nutritional supplement, but rather that the best and most powerful healing strategies – I call them health habits – are available to you free of charge.
Free and easy health solutions
Think about this for a moment: What if you lived in a society where the most powerful and advanced medicines were available to you free of charge? |

Mike: You've led me to another question -- in the press, we always hear about how an herb, usually St. John's Wort, interferes with some prescription drug, but we never hear how a drug interferes with the body or a drug interferes with a nerve.
Dr. Pizzorno: And we should. It's interesting -- many of, maybe the most of side effects from commonly prescribed drugs are due to nutritional abnormalities induced by the drug. |

And when I've talked to various retailers and suppliers of the herb, I've learned that demand is shooting through the roof. Let me give you an update on my impressions of hoodia, based on what I'm hearing from readers and users.
So far, the results are mixed. Some people are reporting that hoodia does absolutely nothing for them. Others say it completely stopped their appetite, and they are well on their way to weight loss. However, the more common response I hear is that hoodia takes the edge off appetite, but doesn't take it away completely. |

John's Wort drives Big Pharma crazy, since they cannot stand for researchers to discover yet another herb or food that works better than their drugs. Naturally, they hope that very few people ever discover this news, since it doesn't serve their interests. They want people to use prescription drugs, and the fewer people who know about nutrition and disease prevention, the better the profits are for the pharmaceutical industry.
As I've said before, I don't believe that this is some grand conspiracy. It's simply greed in action. |

While the herb had managed to help only 24% of cases of moderate to severe depression, the placebo scored 32%. It later emerged that Zoloft was also part of the trial and had helped 25%.14
The clinical difference is not that impressive - and it is getting worse. 'Somewhere between 30% and 50% of patients in depression trials get better when given fake pills,' says Leila Abboud in the Wall Street Journal, 'and that number has increased and become more volatile over time, making it more difficult to prove that a drug works. |

By the way, note that neither the Modifilan company, nor the Amazon herb Company is legally allowed to tell you the truth about what their products can do. The FDA, as you well know by now, has outlawed truthful health statements on nutritional supplements. That's why both of these companies have to describe their supplements in relatively weak language, sidestepping the truth that they are both potent medicines for reducing heavy metals toxicity and preventing (or even reversing) various cancers. |

Due to its blood-thinning properties, it should not be taken with blood-thinning drugs. The herb should also be avoided by anyone with autoimmune disorders such as lupus or multiple sclerosis, because it has been found to stimulate the immune system, and thus may cause flare-ups. Finally, cat's claw should not be used before or after an organ or tissue transplant.
_CURCUMIN_
Curcumin is an extract of turmeric—a spice well known for imparting a golden color and distinctive flavor to Indian and Thai cuisine. |
In an in vitro (test tube) study, ginger extract significantly inhibited the production and activation of two inflammatory compounds, TNF-alpha and COX-2, making it an appropriate anti-inflammatory herb, particularly in the treatment of arthritis.12
Is It Safe?
At prescribed dosage levels, ginger has no recorded problems of significance, and no drug actions have been recorded. However, at high doses, ginger can cause heartburn and other gastrointestinal problems. |

This simple herb slashes your risk of both breast and prostate cancer. Also, remember to stir prostate-friendly garlic into soups and sauces.
The form of vitamin E that best protects the prostate — gamma-tocopherol — isn't the kind people usually buy in pills. Get the protective kind from natural sources like almonds, eggs, and olive oil.
Add some curry dishes to your diet, too. The spice turmeric, which gives curry its yellow color, contains an ingredient called curcurnin, which may be another cancer fighter.

Pop to stop arthritis
Crack away! Popping your joints may prevent osteoarthritis.
Most people believe cracking your knuckles - or any other joint — can cause arthritis. Dr. Tyler Cymet, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, is out to change people's minds. "A lot of the research is old, and a lot of what we teach people is contradictory."
"It's the use of the joint that's healthy," he explains. |
Steep about one teaspoon of this dried herb in a cup of warm water and drink it three times a day. Add honey to soothe your throat.
Marshmallow root. Though not related to the soft, sweet candy you roast at a bonfire, marshmallow root has the gummy texture and slight sweetness of candy. The preparations made from this root can soothe an irritated throat and calm a cough. You can find marshmallow as a liquid extract, powdered root, dried leaves, capsules, and tablets. It's also an ingredient in some cough medicines.
Horehound. |
A member of the mint family, this herb has a place of honor at the Jewish Passover table. What's more, it has been used for centuries to relieve coughs and congestion. To make a tea, steep one teaspoon of the dried leaves in a cup of boiling water for about 10 minutes. Drink it four or five times a day to clear your sinuses and soothe your cough. If you have an ulcer or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), try another remedy. Horehound activates the digestive juices, and it could worsen your symptoms.

But the good news on green tea extract is that it's an effective weight loss herb. It does help control appetite: it helps eliminate or inhibit fat storage, and it helps prevent breast cancer and prostate cancer. So it's a smart ingredient to put into the product -- my own preference, though, would be for a decaffeinated version of green tea extract.
