And then there's fenugreek, an herb that also has a beneficial effect on blood sugar. It reduces fasting blood glucose (blood sugar) when used at the dosage of 1.5 to 2 mg per kg of body weight. (Note: Just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't use fenugreek while pregnant; be aware of this, since many people may first discover they have PCOS while trying to conceive.) Weight Loss: Slow but Successful The single most effective thing you can do to help the symptoms of PCOS is to lose weight.
The herb milk thistle (silymarin) is a premier liver nutrient. The active ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin, which is believed to be responsible for its medicinal qualities. Milk thistle has been used in Europe as a treatment for liver disease since the sixteenth century. The Supporting Cast of Liver-Friendly Nutrients There are a number of other really important nutrients you should consider as part of a liver health/hep-C-fighting program. N-A-C (N-acetyl-cysteine). This derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine is a precursor to the formation of the powerful antioxidant glutathione.
Using feverfew together with another herb, white willow bark, also reduces the frequency, intensity, and duration of migraine attacks, by up to 60 percent. Vitamin B6, Magnesium, and Evening Primrose Oil A Natural Cure for PMS LET ME BE perfectly honest. As a man who has been on this planet for more than a few decades, I've lived with my share of women prior to meeting the love of my life, with whom I'm now happily living. Vitamin B6 Melatonin I've experienced PMS—on the receiving end of the spectrum—in many of its forms and intensities with a variety of women.
Though it's certainly possible to take a "toxic" dose of a vitamin or herb (just as it's theoretically possible to have a "toxic" overdose of water) in real life, it's just not very likely. The "cures" in this book present substantially less risk to your health than prescription medications do, and the likelihood of any negative side effects from any of the natural prescriptions listed in this book— taken as directed—are incredibly small. Remember, though, this is not "faith healing." You're not going to throw away your crutches in a single moment and proclaim, "I'm healed, I can walk again!

Garlic has been used for centuries and has the reputation of being a herb of amazing medicinal and nutritional value. Garlic possesses antiviral, antibacterial and antihistamine properties and also boosts the immune system,- all these mean it is extremely beneficial to people with asthma prone to respiratory complaints. It is also an effective expectorant. Researchers have discovered that one medium garlic clove has an antibacterial action approximately equivalent to 100 000 units of penicillin (a dose of penicillin is in the region of 1 million units).

Brekhman reported that the runners who took the herb finished the race 5 minutes earlier than the placebo group. His colleague Professor Korobkov conducted trials in 1,500 athletes, confirming that the extract increased endurance and improved reflexes and concentration. Numerous other clinical trials followed, focusing on both physical and mental performance. Researchers sought to evaluate the effects of Siberian ginseng on people's ability to withstand adverse conditions such as heat and cold, noise, motion sickness, heavy workloads, exercise, and decompression.
Consequently, in spite of its value as a medicinal herb, St. John's wort is considered a noxious weed in certain circles. Ranchers regard the plant as a pest species because it can be toxic to livestock grazing on large quantities of it. In 1946, beetles were released as a biological control in an attempt to control further spread of the plant. This eradication program has vastly reduced plant populations in some areas of former abundance.

Garlic is also an effective herb for conditions other than asthma. It is known to decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and lower blood pressure. It is used to treat cardiovascular disease, colds and viral infections, hay fever, digestive disorders, and fungal infections such as thrush. In the past it has been recommended against intestinal parasites. Garlic is best taken in its natural form, chopped or crushed to be more readily digestible. For an infusion, simply place 4-6 cloves in a cup of cool water and leave for six hours before drinking.

The most commonly used herb for liver disease, including mushroom poisoning, alcoholic liver disease, and viral hepatitis, is milk thistle. It appears to protect the liver cells against a variety of toxins, as well as help detoxify the liver and promote regeneration of liver cells. Other herbs, including Picrorhiza kurroa, Curcuma longa (turmeric), Camellia sinensis (green tea), and Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice), have also been used to promote liver health.

Because this is a mild herb, you may need 5 to 10 capsules to get the desired result; valerian cannot be thought of like a "sleeping pill," which is generally much stronger and just requires 1 or 2 tablets. One or 2 valerian capsules or tablets may work simply for calming nerves, but more may be required as a sleep aid. Start with a lower number and work up till you get the desired result. (I've found that 5 is the magic number for me to fall asleep if I'm "wired.") Valium and valerian both affect the same neurotransmitter (they both modulate GABA).

Stevia Unlike artificial no-calorie sweeteners, stevia is a natural product, an herb about 300 times sweeter than sugar. Although it gets bitter when exposed to heat, stevia can be used to sweeten smoothies and other uncooked foods. You'll find it in packets, boxes, or convenient sprinkle-top containers in any natural foods store and in some well-stocked grocery stores. A little goes a long way. Tempeh Fermented soybeans formed into high-protein blocks, tempeh is available refrigerated or frozen in natural foods stores.
Typical daily doAe: Start with 1,000 mg and gradually work up to 2,000-6,000 NONFISHY ALTERNATIVES If you are allergic to fish or for ethical or religious beliefs won't use animal products, flaxseed oil, perilla oil—made from an herb related to mint—or hempseed oil are viable options, but in my opinion they are less effective sources of omega-3 fats. Both hempseed and perilla contain alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is a "short-chained" omega-3.

Specific indications for this herb are flulike deep muscular body aches that are worsened by cold. Traditionally used as a woman's remedy, black cohosh is indicated in ovarian neuralgia, dysmenorrhea, nervous excitement, dull headaches, and depression. In general, it is also used as a stomach remedy that improves digestion by relieving excess stress. Because of its nervine qualities, it is also advised for the treatment of nervous coughs.
Andrographolides have important immune-activating and cancer-inhibiting abilities, making this an important medicinal herb in cancer therapies. Andrographis extract (as opposed to pure andrographolide isolate) has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer by causing differentiation-inducing activity upon dividing cells. Some of the tumor-cell lines that have been inhibited by andrographis include stomach cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lymphocytic leukemia, melanoma, and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.
I consider saw palmetto a wonderful tonic herb with a wide range of indications. Siberian Ginseng [Eleutherococcus senticosus) Siberian ginseng is really not a ginseng at all (it contains no ginsenosides) but was given its name because of its adaptogenic capabilities, which are similar to panax ginseng. Like panax ginseng, Siberian ginseng improves the body's capacity to respond to stress, fatigue, and disease. Siberian ginseng helps to regulate the endocrine system, normalizing the weight of the adrenals, thymus gland, spleen, and liver.

PINCH THE PACKET If you're addicted to noncalorie sweeteners—whether an artificial one or (preferably] the herb stevia—as most of us are, use the "pinch the packet" technique. If you're accustomed to adding a whole packet of sweetener to your coffee or iced tea, pinch the corner of the packet so that one-eighth or one-fourth of the packet is left behind. You want the taste to be tolerable but definitely less sweet than you would prefer. Keep reducing the amount as yourtaste buds adapt. GOT MILK, NOT Milk is out as well. Do we understand what a drug, herb, or vitamin pill does in our body? Do these measures help or hinder the body? Are they helping it function according to its priorities, or are they forcing the body to expend energy, changing its natural healing priorities in order to relieve our uncomfortable symptoms? Are we trading immediate symptom relief for longer-term loss of vitality? We need to know the difference between treating symptoms and working to restore health by addressing the causes of disease.

However, for every plant or herb product that has some utility in the treatment of a specific condition, there are another ten that are actively marketed but are in fact useless or potentially harmful. ALPHA LIPOIC ACID Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) (sold as Juvenon, or as ALA, from a number of supplement makers) is found in liver, potatoes, and broccoli. It is also naturally found in the body and can be synthesized in the brain. ALA is a natural cofactor for a number of enzyme complexes involved in energy transfer. It is promoted in the U.S.
Furthermore, on the basis of herb and supplement studies I do not recommend the use of soy, black cohosh, dong quai, evening primrose oil, or any other supplement for hot flashes. So called "natural" female hormones, like estrogenlike compounds derived from plants, if they have any active properties, will also have the negative properties of HRT and therefore should not be used. I do recommend use of SSRIs, clonidine, or gabapen-tin for hot flashes if needed, since these drugs are safe and nonaddictive and have been shown in clinical trials to reduce hot flashes.

Wolfberry [Lycium) Lycium is a popular Chinese tonic herb and, like ho shou wu, is believed to promote long life. Lycium protects the liver from damage caused by toxins and has a cooling effect, thereby making it useful in the treatment of fever. It lowers blood pressure, improves vision, stops excess bleeding, soothes a cough, and relieves wheezing. It contains vitamins Bb B12, and C, as well as betaine, beta-sitosterol, carotene, and physalien. Chinese medicine classifies it as a blood tonic and sometimes calls it the fruit of the matrimony vine.
Licorice [Glycyrrhiza glabra) Licorice is an antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antiulcer herb and it increases the production of interferon and natural killer-cell activity. Licorice inhibits Epstein-Barr virus expression, which is associated with development of certain cancers. It also possesses liver-protective and antiallergenic activity. Triterpenes, mainly glycyrrhizin, possess blocking ability against tumor-promoting agents. A recent study done in Japan demonstrated that glycyrrhizin can inhibit liver cancer caused by hepatitis.
Coumarin, which is another main active ingredient in red clover, as well as the popular Chinese herb dong quai, has been shown to stimulate macrophages and reduce the recurrence of metastatic melanoma. Twenty-seven patients who had recently undergone surgical excision of malignant melanomas received either 50 mg a day of coumarin or a placebo in a randomized, double-blind trial. During a follow-up period of two-and-a-half to three years, there were two recurrences of melanoma in the thirteen patients treated with coumarin, compared to ten recurrences in the fourteen patients given placebo.

He was especially intrigued when he learned that an herb called mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) was used by the Penobscot Indians of Maine to treat cancer. In fact, this mayapple cancer treatment was already published in an 1849 medical book as a cancer treatment, and it was also an established part of the Eclectic medical tradition in cancer syrups and formulas. Dr. Hartwell found that the chemical podophyllotoxin, as well as two related compounds, were highly effective in killing sarcoma 37 (see Chapter 10).
