Nature's Anti-Inflammatory Agent
The Hot 100 includes a derivative of licorice called IXil., which is excellent for gastrointestinal disorders such as chronic indigcs tion and stomach ulcers (see page 42). DGL is a form of licorice that is stripped of glycyrrhetinic acid, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that under certain conditions can raise blood pressure. Therefore, if you have high blood pressure, I recommend that you do not use real licorice products but stick to DGL. But if blood pressure isn't a problem, licorice products may be beneficial. |

The volunteers experienced improved concentration, better memory, and less absentmindedness and confusion. Researchers believe that the herb may work by preventing damage from free radicals.

I guess it's better than the ignorance of years ago, but it's still troublesome for the woman who's trying to make sense of what this inevitable marker in her life will mean. Menopause used to be a virtual mystery; before the 1900s most women died around the age of fifty, a few years before the average onset of menopause. As women lived longer, there were doctors who denied that menopause was anything but a psychological problem. Tranquilizers were thought to be the solution. |

Perhaps a single compound has been isolated for research, and the manufacturer wants to be sure the amount that was found to be effective on actual patients is found in the product.
Does this mean that standardized products are superior to others that are not standardized? Not necessarily. But standardization does give some assurance of potency and benefit. Standardized products are available as capsules, tablets, and liquids. |

Sedatives and stimulants cause a variety of rapid reactions, some of which may be unwanted. Some parts of the person may be stressed in order to help other parts. Strong sedatives and stimulants, whether herbs or drugs, push us outside our normal ranges of activity and may cause strong side effects. If we rely on them and then try to function without them, we wind up more agitated (or depressed) than before we began. |

Two other substances for which memory-enhancing effects have been claimed are piracetam (also called Nootropil) and the related drug anaricetam. Piracetam has been shown to have a positive effect on learning ability in animal experiments. It has also been shown to increase circulation to and oxygenation of the brain in other animal work. It has been used overseas to treat learning disorders in children with variable results. Anecdotally, it is reported to enhance memory in those with memory problems. Some claim it is a mental sharpener and psychic energizer. |

Of the herbs that I'm familiar with, hyssop is the best source of diosmin, a compound that has effects similar to rutin. It not only strengthens veins, it also has anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting that it may be good for varicosities and phlebitis.
Hyssop can be as much as 6 percent diosmin (dry weight). So you'd need only about 5 grams (2 teaspoons) of the herb to get the 300 milligrams of the compound considered necessary to experience vein-strengthening effects. You can prepare hyssop as a tea. |

They also wrote over 2 million prescriptions for echinacea, an immunity-boosting herb that's often used for treating colds and flu.
"Studies have shown that taking echinacea as soon as you start feeling ill shortens the duration of the infection," says Donald J. Brown, a naturopathic doctor and instructor at Bastyr University in Seattle and author of Herbal Prescriptions for Better Health.
Of all the healing herbs, garlic is perhaps the best-studied, and with good reason. |

Chinese herbs; all amino acids—such as L-lysine, L-glutamine; enzymes—such as bromelain and quercitin; co-enzyme Q10; diet formulas; antioxidant formulas; and PABA. The potency of vitamins would have been dramatically reduced to those levels found in food. High potency vitamins, such as Vitamin C in doses of 1000 milligrams or more, would have been regulated as drugs, requiring a doctor's prescription.
The FDA even petitioned to replace the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) on labels to Reference Daily Intake (RDI); RDI requirements are less than the RDA. U.S. |

Arginine
The amino acid (p. 265) arginine has several roles in the body, such as assisting in wound healing (p. 167), helping remove excess ammonia from the body, stimulating immune function (p. 94), and promoting secretion of several hormones, including glucagon, insulin, and growth hormone.
The effect on growth hormone levels1 has interested bodybuilders. |

The word asthma is derived from the Creek language and means "difficult breathing." In this chapter, we will be discussing bronchial asthma, in which a narrowing of the airways occurs due to contraction, or spasm, of smooth muscle, edema (swelling) of the bronchial mucosa, and increased mucus within the bronchial lumen (canal). |

Fertilized Chicken Eggs
According to an old wive's tale, if you crack open a fertilized chicken egg, it means that the stork will soon be paying you a visit. This may not be as silly as it sounds. A supplement derived from fertilized chicken eggs, marketed under the names of Libido and Virilite, has been used successfully in Europe to treat problems associated with low sex drive. As of this writing, these products are very new to the United States and should be arriving shortly.
For best results, follow the directions on the package. |
