Asian ginseng, saw palmetto, St. John's wort, etc.), it is not feasible to include all the studies in the literature. In these cases, many of the primary and most recent trials are included. In the case of other herbs (e.g., ginger [Zingiber officinale] and valerian [Valeriana officinalis]), as many of the clinical trials as the editors could locate are included.

Elsewhere in the catalog, a different product manufactured by a different company claims to contain "Ginkgo bilboa"! Bad Reputation Another strike against generic-use, mass-marketed, and multilevel-marketed herbal formulas is that they make too easy a target for anyone interested in discrediting herbal medicine. Poorly made formulas hyped for dubious purposes such as "getting thin," "maxing muscle," or "spiking energy" are an embarrassment to the responsible herb industry.
A study in rats showed that ginkgo is an effective regenerator of motor nerves, so this herb may be applicable to diabetic neuropathy. Bilberry, another antioxidant with circulatory benefits, contains compounds called anthocyanosides, which improve blood flow to the heart and extremities by protecting cell walls and capillaries from oxidative damage. This herb has a particular affinity for the eye and prevents degenerative eye disease. Studies also show that bilberry can reduce plaque deposits on artery walls, increase heartbeat strength, and thin the blood.

INTERACTIONS No interactions between Li-GLA and warfarin, aspirin, other NSAIDs or herbs, such as Allium sativum (garlic) or ginkgo biloba, have been reported. Such interactions, if they were to occur, might be manifested by nosebleeds and/or increased susceptibility to bruising. If this does occur, Li-GLA intake should be lowered or stopped. OVERDOSAGE There have been no reports of overdosage in the literature. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Oral Li-GLA is presently not available. LITERATURE Botha JH, Robinson KM, Leary WP.
HERBS Some herbs, including ginkgo and garlic, possess antithrombotic activity, and tocotrienols, if taken concomitantly with these herbs, may enhance their antithrombotic activity. OVERDOSAGE Tocotrienol overdosage has not been reported in the literature. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Presently marketed forms of tocotrienols contain mixed tocotrienols in their unesterified forms. These products typically contain d-alpha-tocotrienol, d-gamma-tocotrienol and d-delta-tocotrienol.
HERBS Some herbs, such as garlic and ginkgo, possess antithrombotic activity. High doses of TPGS used concomitantly with these herbs may enhance antithrombotic activity. OVERDOSAGE No reports of TPGS overdosage appear in the literature. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION TPGS is typically used for the treatment of vitamin E deficiency states due to fat malabsorption, such as chronic childhood cholestasis. Doses used for this condition range from 10 to 17 milligrams (as d-alpha-tocopherol) per kilogram daily.

Food Politics

Reportedly, the FDA warning letter stated, "We note that ingredients such as echinacea, ginkgo biloba, St. John's wort, cat's claw, kava kava, and spirulina are listed on the labels of several of your products. FDA has not issued a food additive regulation authorizing the use of these ingredients in food. Additionally, we are not aware of a basis for concluding that these ingredients are GRAS for use in conventional food."8 The FDA also had issued similar warnings to Plain's about its Kitchen Prescription soup line (shown in Figure 27).
In some cases, as might be expected, studies funded by companies that make the products tend to show benefits for the supplement, whereas independent studies find no such benefits; studies of ginkgo biloba for memory loss in the elderly are a prime example of such research inconsistencies.21 Although most scientists consider studies that suggest benefits of herbal supplements as preliminary and inconclusive, the products may well help people with conditions that cannot be treated successfully with conventional medicines even if they do so simply through placebo (or other self-healing) effects.

Reliable references for efficacy, dose, and safety should be consulted (D'Epiro, 1997). In working with patients, healthcare professionals should ask about botanical medicine use when the patient has chronic or relapsing disease, is experiencing or concerned about adverse drug reactions, or there is unexplained poor compliance with treatment or follow-up. Useful questions when inquiring about use of botanical medicine include: "Have you tried other treatments for this problem?" "Have you changed your diet because you thought it might help this problem?

Typical Western herbs include pleurisy root, yerba santa, and lobelia. ginkgo biloba, commonly thought of as an antiaging nutrient, has specific antiinflammatory effects in asthma. Acupuncture, the ancient Chinese healing art, has been proven in numerous studies to be helpful in mitigating the symptoms of asthma. In China, departments of pulmonary medicine, while adopting modern techniques of pharmacological management, are never without the attendance of skilled acupuncturists.

Ginkgo biloba: 40 mg. three to four times daily. • Choline: 650 mg. three times daily. • Zinc: 50 mg. daily. IN ADDITION: In one recent study, thirty patients with Alzheimer's took the following supplements daily: 6 g. of evening primrose oil, 90 mg. of zinc sulfate, and 2 mg. of selenium. These patients had significant improvements in performace tests. Another study found that patients who received supplements of L-carnitine had less deterioration in attention span and performance of tasks. They received 2.5 g. of L-carnitine daily for three months followed by 3 g. daily for three months.
You can get ginkgo extract at health food stores. There has also been promising research that's shown that choline, a nutrient essential for the formation of one of the crucial neurotransmitters in the brain, can be helpful in increasing memory. Zinc, a mineral that plays a role in preventing the degeneration of the nerve system, can be useful in fighting Alzheimer's.
You can get ginkgo at health food stores. There are no known harmful side effects. Another natural remedy for impotence is yohimbine, a substance that is derived from the bark of the yohimbe tree in Africa. Yohimbine (available by prescription) is known to dilate surface blood vessels and stimulate the release of norepinephrine. The usual dose is three 5.4-mg. tablets a day; you should see some results in two to three weeks.
Ginkgo biloba: one 40-mg. capsule or tablet daily for up to six months. If you've seen no results by then, discontinue. IN ADDITION: Try yohimbine—a natural extract available only by prescription. Take three 5.4-mg. tablets daily of the generic form (it's cheaper than the brand names) daily for about two months. If no results, discontinue. If other efforts have failed, ask your doctor about a vacuum constrictor device or VCD, a mechanical aid that can be of help and/or penile injections. indigestion We all know what indigestion is—sort of. It's like heartburn, only different.
Ginkgo biloba: 40 mg. three times daily. IN ADDITION: There is now a procedure—krypton laser treatment— in which a point of light aimed at the vessels in the eye stops the bleeding and prevents or at least retards blindness. This treatment is not suitable for everyone, but you might want to discuss it with your doctor. Memory loss One of the most tiresome joke genres is the forgetfulness of middle-aged and elderly people.

John's Wort and ginkgo biloba piled high at Wal-Mart. The majority of consumers (79 percent in one survey) feel that herbs are safe and probably effective for many conditions currently treated with pharmaceuticals or over-the-counter drugs. And there is not yet an end in sight. A 1998 MarketFacts survey showed that many more Americans would take medicinal herbs if they knew more about them. In this respect Americans are merely catching up with the Germans, Indians, Chinese and many other people who rely on herbs for a good part of their health care.

American researchers are beginning to take an interest in ginkgo biloba and have conducted several studies that show improvements in memory and attention in elderly patients, and short-term memory improvements in healthy younger people. In European research, 120-milligram tablets of 24 percent standardized extract are given two or three times a day for three to six months minimum. Side effects are rare, but do include occasional stomach upset and, more rarely, headache or dizziness.

Its actual components are chlorella; milk thistle; echinacea; probiotic cultures; European bilberry; organically and hydroponically grown soy sprouts; acerola berry juice powder; ultra lecithin; Hawaiian spirulina; organically grown alfalfa, barley, wheat grass, and red beet juice powder; royal jelly; Montana bee pollen; grape seed; green tea; licorice root; Siberian ginseng; dunaliela salina (a type of seaweed); astragalus; natural vitamin E; Nova Scotia dulse; and pharmaceutical-grade ginkgo biloba. Greens Plus in a blender drink is quite tasty.
Other helpful herbs include Siberian ginseng, astragalus, ginkgo, ash-waganda, schizandra, licorice, green tea, uno de gato, and reishi. I usually make an 8-ounce mixture of herbal extracts for postradiation patients, and recommend that they take 1 teaspoon in 1 ounce of aloe leaf juice three to four times daily. Postradiation Tea Make a mucilaginous tea with slippery elm bark, marshmallow, plantain, mullein, horsetail, and comfrey. Add 2 heaping tablespoons of herbs to 3 pints of cool water. Let sit several hours or overnight. Then gently heat herbs, being careful not to boil.
Ingredients: • Siberian ginseng • Schizandra • Green tea • ginkgo biloba • Milk thistle • Ashwaganda • Turmeric • Amla • Triphalia extract • Boswellia extract • Black pepper TOPICAL TREATMENTS Recently, I have been recommending more and more external/transdermal mixtures that have a wide range of applications for various cancers. I am excited about the use of transdermal essential oils that are mixed with other plant oils and DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide, an anti-inflammatory agent).

The liquid extract of the leaves of ginkgo biloba has been shown in many carefully controlled studies to improve circulation and mental functioning in the aged. Rehmannia, a widely used Chinese herb, is effective in regulating blood sugar in people with diabetes and hypoglycemia and in reducing the inflammation and pain of rheumatoid arthritis. Saint-John's-wort really does have the antidepressant qualities that herbalists have long attributed to it. Ginseng root is a good stimulant, an antidote to the effects of stress, and an immune enhancer.

Quercetin, a flavone found in many plants and foods, including eucalyptus, ginkgo biloba, and onions, can inhibit the tumor-suppressor protein gene p53, a critical suppressor gene involved in at least half of all cancers, including breast and prostate cancers. This keeps cell growth in check and prevents cancer transformation. Enzyme inhibitors found in plants can block certain enzyme pathways that cancer uses to proliferate. One common cancer enzyme pathway, called lactate dehydrogenase, works by blocking anaerobic glycolysis.
This is more challenging than prescribing a specific herb to treat a certain ailment— say, for example, saw palmetto for prostate problems or ginkgo biloba for memory loss. However, it greatly enhances the accuracy and success of an herbal prescription because it takes into account factors other than the presenting ailment that may also affect the client's health. For example, when I treat a woman with breast cancer, I choose an herbal combination that has many functions.
