Gary Null's Power Aging

Gary Null

A study done on old rats showed that treatment with ginkgo extract can also partially prevent certain harmful, age-related structural changes as well as free radical damage to the mitochondria.31 Phosphatidylserine (PS) New methods of extracting phospholipids from soy can give us a more concentrated source of nutrients that protect brain cell membranes. One of these phospholipids, phosphatidylserine (PS), plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of brain cell membranes. The breakdown of these membranes prevents glucose and other nutrients from entering the cell.
Start to include these nutrients: L-arginine at 10,000 mg a day, phosphatidyl choline at 1,000 mg a day, mura puama, oat ashwa-gandha, saw palmetto, ginkgo biloba, cinnamon, cardomom, anise, and yohimbe bark. Also, sunflower and other seeds, soaked in water for several hours, and lots of green juices, will help. All of these foods and nutrients can enhance circulation and libido. I have seen some major improvements in that area when people have used this protocol properly.
Consult your physician before taking ginkgo if you are taking a blood-thinning medication or an MAO inhibitor, or if you are pregnant or nursing. We've already discussed vitamin E, but we should mention it again as being very important in maintaining brain function. Vitamin E (not synthetic) slows memory loss at 400 to 800 mg a day. Other nutrients to take note of here are vitamin B6, which improves memory—20 mg per day for 3 months (no longer); and, again, coenzyme Q10, which energizes brain cells—200 mg a day. Aging's most dramatic effects are reserved for the brain.
For circulatory system help, the following apply: ginkgo biloba, gotu kola, hawthorn berry, vitamin E, cayenne pepper, ginger, marjoram, and garlic. Bilberry is an extremely important nutrient, a superstar for the eyes. Pine bark extract and grape seed extract (generally between 100 to 500 mg a day) are also good because they fortify the capillaries that furnish the eyes with fluid, and aid in the prevention of lens impairment. Two Chinese herbs useful for healing dry and inflamed eyes are daigaku eyedrops and shehu.
Bugleweed helps alleviate heart palpitations and lowers blood pressure. ginkgo biloba, the well-known multipurpose herb, gets more blood flowing into the small blood vessels. It's suggested at 300 mg in divided doses. Motherwort helps secure cardiac electrical rhythm. Tansy is another herb used for heart palpitations, and it can be ingested as a tea. Wild yam enhances the body's production of DHEA, and DHEA is crucial in helping to prevent heart attacks. Ar-juna is an Ayurvedic herb that enhances circulation and lowers blood pressure. Indian snakeroot also has anti-hypertensive qualities.

Visual field damage caused by a chronic lack of blood flow in elderly patients can be reversed by treatment with ginkgo biloba extract at doses of 160 mg per day for four weeks. The administration of ginkgo biloba leaves at doses of 120 mg per day for two months reduced plasma clastogenic activity to control levels when measured on the first day following treatment in workers exposed to high levels of radiation from the Chernobyl accident. Such positive effects lasted for a minimum of seven months.

One study found that only seven out of sixteen DHEA products tested contained the amount of DHEA listed on their labels; the rest contained little or no DHEA or contained dosages exceeding safety levels. ginkgo biloba: ginkgo biloba might help increase oxygen flow to the brain and protect brain tissue from free-radical damage. This herb also might help relieve mild dementia, and a 120-milligrams daily dose might slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Look for products standardized to 24 percent flavone glycosides and 6 percent terpene lactones.

Licorice may be used anti-dotally with this herb. The ginkgo nut expels mucus from the lungs, stops wheezing and cough, regulates urination, aids allergies and asthma and stops leucorrhea and spermatorrhea. It is used in Chinese medicine to add heat to the body, increase sexual energy and stop bed-wetting and nocturnal emission. The ginkgo leaf is effective for peripheral blood circulation, especially that to the brain. It improves memory, mental efficiency, concentration, mental confusion and senility.

San Antonio ear, nose and throat specialist, for example, prescribes ginkgo to patients with chronic ringing in their ears (tinnitus)—a condition that's notoriously difficult to treat. "I've gotten good results with ginkgo," he says. Anne Simons, M.D., assistant clinical professor of family and community medicine at the University of California's San Francisco Medical Center and author of Before You Call the Doctor, suggests echinacea for colds and flu. "Studies show it has an antiviral effect," she explains. "I use it myself." And gynecologist Dorothy Barbo, M.D.

HERBS Interactions may occur between hemp seed oil, ALA and its metabolites, and such herbs as garlic (Allium sativum) and ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Such interactions might be manifested by nosebleeds and easy bruising. OVERDOSAGE There are no reports of hemp seed overdosage. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Hemp seed oil comes in capsules and bottles of oil. The ALA content ranges from 15 to 25%. Three to 4 grams of ALA is approximately equivalent to the 0.3 grams, which one would derive from a fish-rich diet.

How-to: Bulk ginkgo cannot be used because it takes a huge number of leaves to make a small amount of medicinal preparation. Many herb companies market ginkgo products. Follow package directions. Ginseng Prized above gold for thousands of years, ginseng root has been Asia's most revered "tonic." It was viewed as an aphrodisiac that strengthens the body, enhances health and aids longevity. Early Jesuit missionaries in Canada discovered American ginseng in 1704 and made a fortune shipping it to China.

ChE inhibitors cost 3-6 times more than clinically documented ginkgo extracts. In absolute terms, the change to ChE inhibitors represent an added yearly cost of approximately $1000 per patient, assuming an optimum dosage. Applied to a population of 1 million patients requiring treatment, the total additional drug cost in Germany alone would be approximately $1 billion per year.

It also makes a superior ginkgo biloba product called Ginkolic. In addition, this company also markets one of the finest wheat grass/ barley grass powdered juice drinks in America; it is called Kyo-Green. All of these fine products are readily available at most health food stores, nutrition centers and herb shops. Of the many different forms of Kyolic available, I personally like Kyolic EPA and liquid Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract the best. I alternate between the two on a regular basis to keep my serum cholesterol and triglycerides down and my heart in good shape.

Three independent reports which have attributed episodes of spontaneous bleeding to intake of ginkgo biloba have appeared in the medical literature. The first case report described a 33-year-old Korean woman with no significant medical history who noted the onset of diffuse headaches which increased in severity over a 3-month period.133 Her headaches were accompanied by diplopia, nausea and vomiting. Her physician prescribed ergotamine/caffeine tablets. MRI of her brain revealed bilateral subdural haematomas.
SIDE EFFECTS In clinical trials, standardized ginkgo extract was associated with a remarkably low incidence of side effects. Only two adverse events were reported in 314 000 patient-years of use in 1988.131 (A 'patient-year' is a measurement of the number of patients under treatment and is based on the number of units sold and the recommended daily dosage, assuming an average duration of therapy of 1 year/patient.
Ginkgo has favourably influenced a number of the metabolic events which accompany cerebral ischaemia, including a preventative effect on ischaemia by inhibiting vasospasm and thrombus formation and improving cerebral blood flow to underperfused areas without robbing adjacent areas. It has increased cerebral perfusion after oral administration23 and increased hypoxia tolerance24 in humans.
However, the Chinese have now incorporated the use of ginkgo leaves into their materia medica. SUMMARY ACTIONS Anti-PAF activity, antioxidant, tissue perfusion enhancer, circulatory stimulant, nootropic.
Standardized ginkgo extract and bilobalide inhibited the hypoxia-induced decrease in ATP content in endothelial cells in vitro. After oral administration in an in vivo model of hypoxia, both compounds increased the respiratory control ratio of mitochondria isolated from rat hepatocytes. The authors concluded that these agents retained the ability to form ATP, thereby reducing the cell's need to induce glycolysis, probably by preserving ATP regeneration by mitochondria as long as oxygen was available.
Taraxacum leaves (dandelion), aches and pains with herbal analgesics such as Salix (willow bark) or Gelsemium and sweats with Salvia (sage). ginkgo throughout the cycle was found to be useful for breast symptoms. Sometimes symptomatic treatment will not be necessary if the other aims are addressed. • Treat the emotional disturbances. This can often be the most important part of the therapy. Treatment is usually throughout the cycle. Tonics such as Hypericum (St John's wort) can help with depressive symptoms and sedatives such as Valeriana (valerian) for anxiety or insomnia.

In large amounts, ginkgo can cause diarrhea, irritability and restlessness. Gingko is also well known to cause heartburn and stomach upset in many people. • Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) - This should not be used during pregnancy. Do not take for more than two weeks at a time. Eating the fresh plant can cause inflammation of mucous membranes. • Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) — Do not use when there is excessive uterine bleeding. Do not exceed recommended dose. High doses over a long period of time can be dangerous.

The adverse reactions being produced after a period of Prozac abstinence could be due to ginkgo's ability to increase oxygen transport at the blood-brain barrier, thus facilitating a much too rapid flushing of Prozac from the brain, where we know it has accumulated in large quantities. Flushing the drug too rapidly would be like being on high doses of Prozac. You must keep in mind that it took time for you to accumulate that much drug residue and you need to give yourself at least that same amount of time in order to remove it safely at the same pace.

They are using gota kola, ginkgo, cayenne, Matol, barley green, pycnogenol, etc. and reporting that these are also helping them in restoring their ability to concentrate and helping to restore memory. Make sure that your source for information on these alternatives is a well informed one. Caution should be taken with anything you are using. The general rule of thumb with all herbs is that they should be gradually tapered onto and off again just as with medication.
I stopped eating meat, exercised (slowly working up to a brisk walk for four miles a day) and used ginkgo. I lost the excess weight I had gained on Prozac and my mind began to clear. My health, physical, mental and emotional seems better than ever, but my doctor just found abnormal enzymes in my liver and I have lost my insurance because of that. So I have just started working to rebuild my liver with another alternative method - barley green. Hopefully it will work as effectively as the other alternatives I have tried and I will be able to get my insurance back.
These reports generally come from those who have been off Prozac for some time before using ginkgo. Those who begin to use it as they are tapering off Prozac seem to do much better and feel it has been very helpful in assisting them with their withdrawal. They also report that if they use too much it causes headaches and they know to cut back the amount.
