You'd never see a chinese medicine doctor limiting their treatment to the feet. The very idea would be considered laughable.
Conventional medicine is outmoded and irrelevant to health
The entire belief system of conventional medicine truly belongs in the history books, and yet scrappy old M.D.s who probably should have retired ten years ago keep on pushing their Descartian distortions onto the world. They literally believe that if everyone in the world only had enough drugs in their bodies, we'd all be super healthy! |

Painful periods can be transformed into painless periods through natural medicine. chinese medicine is especially good at supporting this transformation. Diet plays a huge role, too.
Take responsibility for your health rather than abandoning it
Solving the health problem rather than simply masking it is the responsible thing to do with your body. It's not an overnight solution like the seductively easy Lybrel pill, but it is a far wiser and more wholesome solution that honors your body rather than hijacking its natural functions. Chemical are not the answer to your health problems. |

In Lynn's case, the kidney energy, a water element in traditional chinese medicine (TCM), was being diverted to care for the baby, which left the heart energy, a fire element, blazing out of control, causing anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia. In addition, Dr. Vickers gave Lynn zizyphus, a Chinese herb used for insomnia because it strengthens the yin, the cooling, feminine energy of the body. Yin is the energy that governs sleep and rest, while yang refers to the active, masculine, bright qualities of energy. |

There are literally millions of people in this country who could benefit from Ephedra as part of a chinese medicine remedy. In chinese medicine, Ephedra is never taken alone, and never in high doses. Just like the Chinese food served in the United States is nothing like Chinese food purchased in China, chinese medicine in the United States doesn't match the chinese medicine practiced in China.
"Ayurvedic medicine" is a system of holistic medicine practiced widely in India and throughout Southeast Asia. It is also gaining popularity and recognition in the United States, Europe, Australia and many other areas of the world as people come to recognize the inherent wisdom and innate safety of Ayurvedic medicine. |

Bill Moyers, embodying the common-sense skepticism of the ordinary man on the street, travels to China in the company of David Eisenberg, a respected Western-trained doctor who also previously studied chinese medicine in China. Eisenberg functions as the cultural broker of the film, the bridge between East and West.
From the opening strains of Asian music and images of temples and palaces, the Orientalist sensibility of the film is made clear. |
By the mid-1990s, websites had sprung up offering trips to study chinese medicine "in the style of Bill Moyers." Martial-arts centers added qigong teachers to their staff, books began to be published (a quick search in 2007 on Amazon.com turned up close to two thousand titles), and commercial videos about qigong did brisk sales under titles like "Secrets of China."51 In 1997, the city and county of San Francisco went so far as to proclaim November 20-26 "Qigong Week. |
Chinese medicine," Mao proclaimed, "is a grand cache of knowledge that we should actively bring to light and further evolve."56 This proclamation was soon reproduced on the front page of traditional Chinese medical textbooks everywhere.
It was a classic exercise in the making of a tradition, and there were several reasons why it happened. Mao was looking to reduce China's dependence on the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was training most of China's doctors and providing most of its medical supplies. |

Naturopathic therapies include dietary and lifestyle changes, clinical nutrition (nutritional supplementation), botanical medicine (herbs), homeopathy, chinese medicine and acupuncture, hydrotherapy, manipulation, physical therapies, psychotherapy, and minor surgery. We also recognize the judicious use of prescription medications when the benefits exceed the risks, integrated into a comprehensive naturopathic health-care plan. Some naturopathic physicians receive extra training and licensure to practice obstetrics and natural childbirth. |

The treatments in chinese medicine include acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and Tui-Na, which resembles massage therapy combined with therapeutic touch. chinese medicine has the longest history, and the most practical application, of any system of medicine in the world, outdating Western medicine by about 3800 years. In China, doctors were practicing relatively advanced medicine before the birth of Christ. |

Oh, one more thing in case you're wondering—acupuncture doesn't hurt a bit. If you closed your eyes during the treatment, you'd never even know that there were needles actually sticking out of you. I know this for a fact because I've had it done. Obviously it didn't make me pregnant—but it definitely felt good afterward. |

It's worth noting, however, that in chinese medicine, dong quai is almost always used in combination with other medicines and herbs. Dong quai may be one of those herbs or compounds that's used best as part of an overall treatment plan or formula, where it might have a synergistic effect. It doesn't seem to have too much of an effect on its own, though.
Soy has long had a reputation as good for hot flashes. I wrote about soy in my previous book, The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, and if you read it, you probably know I'm not a big cheerleader for the "all soy all the time" brigade. |
In chinese medicine, where ginseng has a long and distinguished history of use, it is used for entirely different purposes, not the least of which is supporting the immune system.
The Many Uses of Ginseng
But there's little doubt that ginseng, when used properly, can give you a boost. It seems to help the immune system. In one multicenter, placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind study, a standardized ginseng extract was given over twelve weeks; at week four, all volunteers also received a flu vaccination. |

In traditional Indian and chinese medicine, the appendix is known to play a vitally important role. It breeds large quantities of friendly, probiotic bacteria and supplies them to the colon and other parts of the gut in order to neutralize any harmful substances. The strategic location of the appendix allows these useful microorganisms to blend with the fluid fecal matter as it begins its passage through the large intestine. More than 400 strands of beneficial bacteria live in the human gastrointestinal tract. |

For centuries, it's been used in chinese medicine, mostly for things like fevers and inflammation. But in the past decade or so, research has shown that huperzine A works in the brain to prevent the breakdown of an important neurotransmitter needed for memory and cognition. It's pretty exciting stuff.
As of this writing, there is an ongoing phase 2 clinical trial to evaluate huperzine A in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. |

Astragalus
Astragalus membranaceus (Dong Quai in chinese medicine) is mostly used to strengthen immunity and assist the body with preventing colds, the flu and other illnesses. However, according to Chinese tradition, astragalus should not be taken during the early stage of infections. It may still ward off the flu, however, if taken just as the first signs or symptoms begin to appear. Its greatest effects are preventative. |

Phenols, formaldehyde and benzene are workhorse chemicals for many procedures, whether in Western or chinese medicine. The two women worked with these chemicals at metal benches affixed to sinks. There were no hoods to take away fumes. The smells around the bench were something most people grew accustomed to if they wanted to make it through the program.
About ten years ago, each moved to America. Like many who go into medical fields, both have treated many cancer patients, often easing the discomfort and nausea that frequently go along with modern treatment. |

Acupressure: Use your palms to massage the abdomen in a clockwise circle for two minutes. Stop for 10 seconds and then massage in a counter-clockwise circle for two minutes. |
