Soups are common ways to get the benefits of chinese herbs while enjoying a tasty meal. Astragalus, due to its warm, sweet, yellow color and flavor—its almost chicken-soup-like and buttery qualities—is a classic soup broth base to try, but dong quai, schizandra, and ligusticum can also be used this way. Ginseng, licorice, and others may be added to soups and stews, or grains can be cooked in their broth. A spoonful of soup helps the medicine go down. Your family may not even notice it's medicine.

While both TCM and Ayurveda have their complexities (and both Ayurvedic and chinese herbs are widely recommended and discussed throughout this book), TCM as a system of thought is less easily broken down into a "first-timer's guide to Eastern healing." It is less easily condensed and, we feel, carries more risk of being confusing at this stage of your journey. But we do encourage you to learn more about TCM if your interest is piqued. There are several excellent books on this extremely powerful system, and they are listed in "Recommended Reading" on page 517.
Ginseng Asian ginseng is another tonic herb, very popular and probably the most Westernized—at least, the most familiar—of chinese herbs. The ethnic (Chinese) name for this herb, jen shen, means "man root"—possibly because it is a highly regarded male tonic or because the root's "branches" can resemble the arms and legs of a human figure. The root is not harvested until it is at least two years old; as the root ages, its value increases. Classified as sweet and warming by the Chinese, ginseng is used as a general energizer and (as the Chinese call it) qi replenisher.

As I mentioned in an earlier chapter, chinese herbs can be radically cheaper at Chinese markets than at an herb pharmacy—the most dramatic example being the astragalus I purchase from a Chinese grocery at $8 a pound, where the same stuff at the herb pharmacy costs $80 (eighty!) per pound. A qualified local herbalist can be a huge help in this process, directing you to the best sources for the best herbs both for price and quality.

A random comparison between this single use of rhubarb and the combined treatment of Western medicine and chinese herbs was made in other patients experiencing the same type of difficulties. Furthermore, six different combinations of rhubarb were also tested. In all tests made, the single use of rhubarb took the shortest time to stop bleeding, reduce fevers and help patients towards quicker recovery than the others did. This action exhibited by rhubarb may be due to the presence of tannic acid, which constricts blood vessels.

Keep in mind, however, that chinese herbs are generally used in mixtures rather than by themselves. The usual dose is 3 to 10 grams of sliced dried root per day or as a liquid extract (1:1,25 percent ethanol): 0.5 to 2 ml three times daily. Dong quai contains anticoagulant coumarins16 and can cause bleeding when administered concurrently with warfarin (commonly known by the brand name Coumadin) or, potentially, other anticoagulants.17 It also contains furocoumarins, which can cause easy sunburning (photosensitization).

The introduction of Chinese prepared medicines and the books describing them have increased Western interest in chinese herbs. The authors hope this growing interest in the prepared medicines will lead the serious student to closely study the history and development of the entire traditional Chinese materia medica. Mastering the art of herbal medicine practice requires lengthy study of the strategies as well as the formulas of Chinese herbal medicine.6

The herbs have made a fundamental difference in my life. The chinese herbs are different from American herbs because they are given in combination. They address a number of symptoms at one time, and they are also cost-effective, which I think is important for many people today. This is something that a woman can choose to use in conjunction with regular health care approaches: self-exams, medical care, proper nutrition, and addressing emotional health. SUSAN I had a job I loved, but it was very stressful. I wound up with amenorrhea for a few weeks.

The Chinese Ministry of Health indicated that adulterated medicines, available without a doctor's prescription, are causing disabilities and deaths.
