For this, I gave her a blend of chinese herbs including cordyceps, the liver-protecting herb milk thistle (Silybum marianum); L-tyrosin to promote thyroid function; sublingual DHEA; and a low-dose topical natural estrogen and progesterone cream. To treat the fungal problem, I prescribed allicin and other natural antifungals. For her neck pain, I advised acupuncture. Elizabeth already had eliminated alcohol and most of her daily coffee and caffeinated sodas.

For example, a formula for colds may have chinese herbs combined with aspirin or perhaps an antibiotic. Like medicines containing heavy metals, such medicines are illegal to import into the United States. However, they sometimes make it into the United States when the pharmaceuticals are not listed on the labels or are removed from the list to avoid detection, or kept in the Chinese language so you cannot understand them. Fortunately, the FDA is aware of this problem, and the number of poisonings has been very small.
Studies have identified white peony root as one of several chinese herbs with the ability to improve memory by inhibiting prolyl endopeptidase (PEP), an enzyme that metabolizes several neurotransmitters (Tezuka et al., 1999). • High-fat diets produce lipid peroxides, which inflame the linings of blood vessels and contribute to arteriosclerosis. In a 1991 study on rabbits, white peony root inhibited formation of the peroxides, correlating with a 74.2% reduction in aortic lesion size (Jia and Tang, 1991).

Most of the chinese herbs mentioned in this book are considered to be tonics of either the Yin-body, Yang-energy, Yin-blood or tonics for specific organs. Usually these herbs are used in a powerful Chinese herb soup. They are never cooked in a water soluble metal container as this will dilute their properties. For the more difficult diseases involving deficiency, they should be regularly used over a long period of time to 216 help "build up the deficiency," the primary therapeutic principle of Chinese medicine.

What can you say about reports stating that "significant amounts of heavy metals " have been found in chinese herbs? Virtually all animal products and herbs contain small amounts of various naturally occurring heavy metals, including lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum. These do not pose a health concern unless they exceed safe levels (remember, dosage is everything). While not all Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs contain excessive amounts of heavy metals, some batches have shown concentrations of heavy metals that exceed safe levels, sometimes to an alarming degree.
You must remember that even the best chinese herbs, such as ginseng root and dang gui root, cannot be used without some basic diagnostic information. Herbal choices must be made based upon individual needs. Following the Taoist philosophy of Yin and Yang—the balance and union of opposites—we achieve health by balancing and harmonizing the conflicts we hold within ourselves. Over a thousand years ago, the ancient Shennong Bencao Jing (Pharmacopoeia of Herbs) included a category of herbs suggested for use every day to strengthen vitality, increase energy, and lengthen life span.

Phil, who continues to see me regularly, is on a regimen of antiinflammatory and antiviral chinese herbs along with nutritional supplementations. He is cured of diabetes and his blood pressure is normalized. His cholesterol has also lowered considerably, but is still above normal values. His energy and mood are good. He reads and regularly browses the Internet for information on hepatitis C; after culling what he finds, he shows me what he thinks is promising, and I approve or disapprove of adding it to his regimen.

Zhu ling spray-dried water extract was fed to mice and showed no TNF-releasing activity, whereas the chinese herbs bupleurum, angelica, cnidium, and cinnamon had strong activity in the same assay (Haranaka et al, 1985). An alcoholic extract of G.umbellata has demonstrated antibiotic actions in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (Chang & But, 1986), and a polysaccharide derivative demonstrated hepatoprotective effects in mice (Lin and Wu, 1988). The polysaccharides have also been found to confer protection against ionizing radiation (Hu and But, 1987).
In a screening of 80 different chinese herbs for hair growth promoting activity, G. umbellate placed third among the five most active species. One of the constituents responsible for this action was identified as 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, a compound with anti-inflammatory activity (Inaoka et al, 1994). Human Clinical Reports Grifola umbellata was shown to increase diuresis, stimulate the immune system, and act as an anticancer agent. In the same studies, both herbs proved even more potent when combined with licorice and the chinese herbs poria and bunge root. This ancient Chinese combination is known as Suanzaorentang. Although chinese herbs like rehmannia and wild yam were once restricted to the realm of Chinese medicine, they are now available in most natural food stores.) German researchers were so impressed with how anise, caraway, cumin, mint and linden flowers improved iron absorption that they suggested that anyone with an iron deficiency drink tea made with at least one of these herbs. Iron-rich herbs include parsley, watercress and the seaweed dulse. Caraway seeds were so revered by sixth-century Persians that citizens used them to pay taxes.
Here, too, it is a basic soup made using chinese herbs. You can find many adaptations of this soup designed to treat different conditions in Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine, by my friends Harriet Beinfield and Efrem Korngold. I love this soup and cannot imagine a tastier way to good health. Mushroom Barley Soup Yi cup barley 3A cup soup stock 2Yz cups water 2 teaspoons tamari (or lA teaspoon salt) Y2 cup chopped onion 1 or 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons olive oil Yi pound, fresh medicinal mushrooms (such as shiitake) Black pepper to taste TO.
Chinese Soup 2 ounces chinese herbs (such as astragalus, ginseng, rehmannia, codonopsis, ligustrum, burdock and shizandra berries) 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh ginger Ys cup uncooked rice 4 cups soup stock 1 diced carrot I beet or 1 turnip, diced 1 diced yam % cup shiitake mushrooms, slivered TO. Place the herbs (including ginger) in a muslin bag or tie them together with a string. Simmer the bag and rice in the soup stock for 1 hour. Add the vegetables and mushrooms to the herbal stew, and simmer gently for another 30 minutes. Remove the bag filled with herbs, and serve the soup.
All these chinese herbs are sold in North America individually and in herbal formulas for the heart. Another heart-healing herb that has found fame for hundreds of years— both in the East and in the West—is motherwort. Motherwort's botanical name, cardiaca, actually means "heart" in Latin. One study done in China showed that this herb slows a rapid heartbeat and generally improves the heart's activity. As a nervous system sedative, it also reduces the anxiety, stress or nervous tension that so often go along with heart problems.

Asai noticed that many of the most important chinese herbs contained high amounts of organic germanium, which is safe for human use. In his book, Dr. Asai touted germanium as a nontoxic but potent anticancer treatment, useful for numerous other medical conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, Candida albicans (yeast) infections, and viral infections. After a brief period of intense publicity, germanium fell out of the spotlight.

For instance, in a recent analysis of 24 chinese herbs, it was found that Reishi and Panax ginseng contained much higher levels of germanium than the others (Chiang and Wann, 1986). Many other medicinal mushrooms may contain large quantities of germanium, as well as polysaccharides and protein-bound polysaccharides, which have also been found to directly stimulate the immune system (Hung-Cheh & Mieng-hua, 1986). It is relevant that some reports indicate that it may not be wise to take purified germanium supplements due to possible kidney toxicity (Reynolds, 1993).
