Food allergies commonly play a role in causing rheumatoid arthritis. Although many physicians and the well-known national arthritis organizations often say that diet has nothing to do with arthritis, clinical experience and a number of research articles have shown otherwise. Healthy diets and avoiding food allergens are important components of arthritis treatment. Allergy tests can help pinpoint which foods to avoid. |

Although it is relatively new in the United States, ginkgo biloba is the most widely prescribed medication in Europe, often for problems related to poor circulation. Every system of the body—from the brain to sexual function—is dependent on a steady supply of blood, which provides both oxygen and nutrients to hungry cells. If the blood flow is compromised, we will feel the effects in countless ways, leaving us feeling both physically and mentally fatigued.
Ginkgo can help reverse these problems by restoring adequate circulation. |

Interestingly, ginkgolides from ginkgo biloba are naturally occurring platelet-activating factor antagonists. Ginkgo is a versatile herb that I have used in many degenerative diseases. Ginkgolides inhibit PAF-induced release of thromboxane B2 and prostaglandins from primary cultures of human and rat glomerular mesangial cells. Ginkgo also inhibits PAF-induced formation of reactive oxygen species from cultured mesangial cells and destruction of the glomeruli (ginkgo is known to be an antioxidant, which is important since free radical production is implicated in progressive kidney disorders). |

If atherosclerosis (blockage of the arteries) was making it impossible for a man to sustain an erection, herbs such as ginkgo biloba or yohimbe were prescribed to increase blood flow to the penis. It took us centuries to discover what these healers knew intuitively: Good health is the best aphrodisiac of all.
Before describing how supplements can enhance sex, I want to make one point: Maintaining a strong, well-functioning body is the best way to maintain a satisfying sex life. Eating the right foods and living a healthy lifestyle will keep your body and mind in great shape. |
HerbaSway, a producer of standardized Chinese herbs, notes that many herbs with proven health benefits, such as ginkgo biloba, actually contain chemicals that if used alone can be toxic. However, when combined with other chemicals found in the plant, these "bad" chemicals are neutralized and may even be helpful. True Chinese healers do not use herbs individually, but combine them in formulas with other herbs.
Until very recendy, Chinese herbs were available only from Chinese herb shops, usually known only to other Chinese healers. |
Many combination products designed to improve sexual performance for men include yohimbe, along with ginkgo biloba, zinc, and L-arginine. Since yohimbine hydrochloride can cause serious side effects in some men, I err on the side of caution with yohimbe. Before you use it, I recommend that you check with your physician or natural healer.
What about the claims that yohimbe can help body builders bulk up? |

These include such nutrients as Ginkgo biloba and various other herbs from the Asian pharmacopeia, such as ginseng. Other natural medicinal tonics that are of particular benefit are phosphatidyl serine, phosphatidyl choline, and acetyl-L-carnitine.
Another nutritional tonic I often recommend is a "green juice" that includes such ingredients as blue-green algae, wheat grass, and spirulina. These products are the richest possible sources of partial proteins called peptides, which the brain converts to neuropeptides (such as the well-known beta endorphins). |
Patients were tested for cognitive function, memory, and concentration, and those taking Ginkgo biloba improved significantly in all categories over a one-month period.
As you can see, relatively simple nutritional changes can have a profound effect upon the function of the brain.
Stress Management and Brain Regeneration
It is critically important for people suffering from memory loss to reduce their stress levels. Continued stress creates further neurological damage. |
On a regular basis, he took a number of brain nutrients: vitamins, minerals herbs, Ginkgo biloba, lecithin, and the brain-cell nutrient DMAE. Also, he told me that he tried his best to moderate his exposure to stressors, and that he didn't have any overtly negative habits, such as drinking too much alcohol. He was already taking the pharmaceutical hormone replacement substance DHEA.
It was very apparent that he was investing a significant amount of time and energy in being mentally fit. But somehow the various pieces of his "puzzle" of brain regeneration just weren't fitting together. |

In addition to a wide range of vitamins and minerals, his nutritional program also included regular ingestion of a number of natural medicinal tonics, including Ginkgo biloba; a high-quality Chinese ginseng product, Ching Chun Bao; a full-spectrum "green-juice" product; and high dosages of vitamin C (up to 7 grams daily).
According to the Western interpretation of nutritional therapy, these medications provided the optimal biochemical milieu for his cognitive function. |
Along with the other elements of her program, she took relatively high dosages of deprenyl, phosphatidyl serine, and Ginkgo biloba.
Slowly she began to improve. Then, once her recovery gained momentum, she began to exhibit more pronounced signs of cognitive regeneration. She began to be considerably more articulate, and no longer struggled to find the proper word. She had much more mental energy, and became significantly more involved with the daily routine of her life. Her concentration increased in strength and duration. |

If the cause of sexual dysfunction is diabetes, heart disease, or hormonal imbalances, this program is likely to provide some help, but it is only the beginning. There are more vigorous programs for these conditions which may also help restore your sexuality and help you regain your love life.
For women with specific hormonal needs, natural progesterone supplements or natural estrogens maybe valuable. For men, testosterone replacement is often part of a total program. |

VV Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). The Germans use large oral doses of ginkgo to treat leg ulcers, reportedly with good results and no toxicity. I would try it. To use this herb, you'll need to buy a 50:1 extract at a health food store. (Active constituents are not present in high enough concentrations in the fresh leaves to warrant using them.) You can try 60 to 240 milligrams a day, but don't go any higher than that. In large amounts, ginkgo may cause diarrhea, irritability and restlessness.

Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow in deprived areas, particularly the inner ear and the macula, where it may have an effect on macular degeneration. In addition to its ability to counteract free-radical damage and inhibit blood clotting, ginkgo may have some ability to assuage Alzheimer's disease, although there have been no definitive studies demonstrating this effect. No toxicity from ginkgo has been reported in the literature, even after prolonged treatment.
Echinacea
Echinacea is another herb I frequently recommend. |

Antiparasitic: Destroys parasites. Antiparasitics are generally toxic to humans if used in excess. |
Ginkgo biloba yA/ in the Ginkgoaceae or Ginkgo ^© family.
Part used: Leaf.
Taste/Smell: Slightly sour taste.
Dosage: Infusion: 1 tablespoon per cup of water; or 1:1 fresh + dry strength liquid extract: 20-60 drops 1-4 times per day.
Mental picture and specific indications:
Ginkgo is indicated when the individual has debilitated peripheral circulation to the limbs and head because it increases circulation to all peripheral parts of the body. |
Ginkgo, Ginkgo biloba, improves overall metabolism of the brain by increasing cerebral circulation.68' 71 It increases oxygen and energy production in the brain and facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products. This supports all activities of the brain, including the hypothalamus and the pituitary, which control metabolic functions throughout the body including the adrenals and other endocrine organs. Research shows ginkgo stimulates the nervous system.

Ginkgo biloba extract has demonstrated an ability to increase protein synthesis. In addition, it is known to be a potent antioxidant. The most likely explanation is that it is the combination of these two effects (and others) rather than one single mechanism.
TREATMENT SUMMARY
Treatment is largely dependent on a few central elements: accurate determination of which factors are contributing to the depression; balancing of errant neurotransmitter levels; and optimizing nutrition, lifestyle, and psychological health. |
Here are the approximate dosage recommendations using other forms (nonstandardized) of Cimicifuga racemosa: Powdered rhizome: 1-2 g Tincture (1:5): 4-6 ml Fluid extract (1:1): 3-4 ml (1 tsp) Solid (dry powdered) extract (4:1):
250-500 mg
• Ginkgo biloba extract
(24% ginkgo flavonglycoside content): 40 mg
Lifestyle
Exercise regularly—at least thirty minutes three times a week. |
Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) demonstrates impressive results as an antioxidant, exerts positive effects on platelet function, improves blood flow to the nervous system, and has been shown to enhance nerve cell functions. This has now been assessed in a clinical study.5' Unfortunately, the study only lasted seven days—hardly enough time for a suitable evaluation. While the study seemed to demonstrate that ginkgo is not of value for acute flare-ups of symptoms, it is of far too short a duration to assess the value of ginkgo for treating MS in the long term. |

Flavonoid-Rich Extracts
Flavonoid-rich extracts of bilberry (Vac-cinium myrtillus), Ginkgo biloba, or grape seed (Vitis vinifera) offer significant benefits in the prevention and treatment of ARMD. In addition to possessing excellent antioxidant activity, all three extracts have been shown to increase blood flow to the retina and improve visual processes. Clinical studies in humans have demonstrated that all three are also capable of halting the progressive vision loss of dry ARMD and possibly even improving visual function. |
