Ginkgo biloba standardized extract can relieve pain associated with fibroids. Oestrogen-promoting herbs such as Chamaelirium luteum (helonias root) and Dioscorea (wild yam) should be avoided. To modify the effects of oestrogen, the intake of phytooestrogens and oestrogenic lignans should be increased.
Case history
A patient aged 43 presented with uterine fibroids characterized by menorrhagia and pain, especially with menstruation. She did not want surgery and asked for herbs to control her symptoms. Treatment was as follows (based on 1 week). |
Aesculus hippocastanum

Dose 8 ml twice a day.
The Ginkgo and Aesculus were mainly for circulatory problems but Aesculus also has expectorant properties due to its saponin content.
• Garlic, 1-2 fresh crushed cloves per day.
• A dairy-free diet was followed.
Treatment over 2 years has resulted in a substantial improvement of this patient's condition. |

150 ml
Dose 7.5 ml with water three times a day.
Over the ensuing months her blood pressure was typically
135/85. She had no problems with palpitations and her anxiety and angina had improved.
The rationale for the formula was as follows:
• Panax notoginseng, Crataegus and Salvia for her heart and angina. |
Ginkgo biloba (standardized) 20 ml
Picrorrhiza kurroa 1:2 15 ml
Glycyrrhiza glabra 1:1 20 ml
Scutellaria baicalensis 1:2 30 ml
Total 150 ml
Dose 8 ml tds
In addition, Echinacea angustifolia 1:2 5 ml once a day was prescribed from time to time. Also an 'acute formula' similar to the one for 'Kylie' was taken during colds and influenza instead of the basic formula. The Crataegus was for the headaches and circulation and the Baical skullcap for the sinusitis. 'John' actually worsened in the first 3 months of treatment, probably because of the natural progression of the disorder. |

A recent report on ABC World News Tonight said that many people bleed to death during routine or even minor surgery because the doctor did not know that the patient was taking blood thinning herbs, such as garlic or gingko biloba. The herb you are taking may have no interactions with other drugs, but you can never be sure, so don't take that chance. Tell you doctor, even if you fear he or she will disapprove. You would rather face a little criticism from your doctor than end up losing your life over an accident that could easily be avoided. |
Ginkgo biloba — This herb is generally very well tolerated. Ginkgo may potentiate MAO-inhibitors, so consult your physician if you are using an anti-depressant and are not sure if it is in this class of drugs. In large amounts, ginkgo can cause diarrhea, irritability and restlessness. Gingko is also well known to cause heartburn and stomach upset in many people.
• Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) - This should not be used during pregnancy. Do not take for more than two weeks at a time. Eating the fresh plant can cause inflammation of mucous membranes. |

Ginkgo biloba, a circulation-increasing herb, has been shown to be effective in treating impotence. Though it has been studied mostly in relationship to health conditions of the elderly, especially for its ability to increase blood and oxygen flow to the brain and to prevent or slow progression of cerebrovascular insufficiency, ginkgo is a potent antioxidant. While circulation to the brain appears to be the special forte of ginkgo, it increases blood flow to small capillaries all over the body. |

W Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Hundreds of European studies have confirmed the use of standardized ginkgo leaf extract for a wide variety of conditions associated with aging, including memory loss and poor circulation. There's not much data on using ginkgo to treat Alzheimer's, but I wouldn't be surprised if it helped. It's probably worth trying. You can take 60 to 240 milligrams of standardized extract a day, but don't go any higher than that. In large amounts, ginkgo may cause diarrhea, irritability and restlessness.

YOHIMBINE {Corynanthe yohimbe) SCHIZANDRA FRUIT (Schizandra chenensis) GINKGO (Ginkgo biloba)
Brief Descriptions
These three are included together because of their remarkable sexual rejuvenating properties, particularly when used in conjunction with each other.
Yohimbine is the popularized name of a real tongue-twisting chemical known officially as 17 alpha-hydroxyyohimban-16 alpha-carboxylic acid methylester. Yet it has clinically verified aphrodisiac effects to it and is obtained from the bark of an African evergreen by the same name and growing in Cameroon, West Africa. |

Ginkgo biloba. The ginkgo tree has survived for hundreds of thousands of years due to its powerful immune system. An extract of the leaf of the tree improves circulation to the microcapillaries of the brain and heart so that needed nutrients and oxygen can get to all the tissues.
Ginseng is the best-known longevity herb. For centuries, the Chinese have revered ginseng for its rejuvenating effects. Research has shown that ginseng can stop free radical damage associated with aging. It helps people focus better when under stress, and increases overall energy levels.

Ginkgo biloba is discussed at length other places in this book; it is a long-term remedy, and as a tonic can be useful to cardiovascular health because of its protective effect on small capillaries. As a daily tonic, try 3 capsules of 50:1 extract standardized to contain 24 percent ginkgoflavono-cides, or 6 to 8 capsules of the whole ground leaf.
Coleus, the Ayurvedic herb discussed earlier for its use with asthma, allergies, skin disease, and depression, has also been used traditionally for cardiovascular conditions. |

"A lot of the elderly look for a quick fix," said pharmacist Ben LeCarre. "Seniors are more innocent. They are not accustomed to the mercinary and deceptive advertising that younger people take for granted these days. Seniors tend to simply believe what they've heard on TV or what they've read in an advertisement."
How to Spot False Claims

Until recendy, no one knew precisely how ginkgo affected circulation, but according to Dr. Lester Packer, a professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California at Berkeley, ginkgo's primary role in the body may be as a regulator of nitric oxide metabolism. Nitric oxide is critical for regulating many body functions, including blood flow. |

My ninety-two-year-old mother has been taking ginkgo biloba for two years, since her memory began to falter. I think it has helped her greatly.
Doing the research for this book was formidable and quite different from the research for the other nineteen books I have written, most on related health and nutrition subjects. In researching other books, I found that much of the medical literature was readily available. |

Ginkgo biloba also improves memory and sharpens cognitive function in young, healthy people. For best results, I recommend taking ginkgo every day. Look for a standardized extract containing 24-percent ginkgo flavone glycosides and 6-percent terpene lactones. Some products are also standardized for a minimum of 0.8-percent ginkgolide B. The recommended dosage is 60 milligrams twice a day with meals.
As with many herbal agents, ginkgo's effects will not be apparent overnight. It may take up to twelve weeks before you notice benefits. |

ANTI-ANXIETY NUTRITIONAL TRANQUILIZERS
Those suffering from depression often find it difficult to muster up the energy to do much of anything, and they generally feel emotionally exhausted. If depression is characterized by lethargy of the mind, body, and soul, anxiety is all about tension. Anxious individuals are tightly wound, apprehensive, even panic-stricken. It's an unpleasant state, and we've become accustomed to medicating it with Valium or Xanax. |
