Ginkgo biloba's medicinal use can be traced back to the oldest Chinese materia medica (2800 BC). The ginkgo leaves have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for their ability to "benefit the brain", relieve the symptoms of asthma and coughs, and help the body eliminate filaria.
Ginkgo leaf extracts are now among the leading prescription medicines in both Germany and France, where they account for 1 and 1.5%, respectively, of total prescription sales. In 1989 alone, over 100,000 physicians worldwide wrote over 10,000,000 prescriptions for GBE. The popularity of GBE has increased since. |

Ginkgo biloba enhances the flow of oxygen to the brain and helps protect brain cells from the harmful effects of free radicals. Select a standardized extract that supplies 24 percent ginkgo heterosides (sometimes also called flavo-glycosides) and take 40 milligrams three times daily.
¦ Olive leaf extract has antiviral and antifungal properties. This may help to reestablish healthy intestinal flora in individuals in whom it is compromised. The digestive tract may be a source of immune-triggering reactions than could heighten MS symptoms. |

According to the results of this preliminary study, Ginkgo biloba extract appears to be very effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction due to lack of blood flow. The improved arterial inflow to erectile tissue is assumed to be due to GBE's enhancement of blood flow through both arteries and veins without any change in systemic blood pressure.
It should be noted that ginkgo's effects are more apparent with long-term therapy, and better results may be obtained with a 120-milligram per day dose in order to take full advantage of ginkgo's effect in improving blood flow. |

V Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Asian healers have used extracts of ginkgo leaves for thousands of years to treat asthma, allergies, bronchitis and coughs. Ginkgo has become popular in the West because of its benefits for the elderly: increased blood flow to the brain and treatment of stroke and other infirmities of old age. But in China, it's still widely used for asthma.
Ginkgo works because it interferes with platelet-activating factor, a protein in the blood that plays a role in triggering bronchospasms. |

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Ginkgo is best known for improving blood flow through the brain. But it also seems to boost blood flow into the penis, thus aiding iffy erections.
In several small studies, physicians have obtained very good results with 60 to 240 milligrams daily of a standardized ginkgo extract. In one nine-month study, 78 percent of men with impotence due to atherosclerotic clogging of the penile artery reported significant improvement without side effects. |

DIABETES
An insulin-dependent diabetic for four years, my 17-1/2 year old daughter, due to her age and lifestyle, found it hard to control her condition on one insulin injection daily. The diabetes specialist told her that if her high blood glucose level didn't come down, she would have to have an injection morning and night.
This upset her, because she's already a pin cushion and has followed a strict diet religiously. |

VW Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Literally dozens of studies show that ginkgo improves blood circulation. Most of the research has focused on this herb's ability to promote blood flow through the brain, which is why ginkgo extract is widely prescribed in Europe for recovery from stroke and the mental slowing of old age.
But several studies have explored ginkgo's effects on intermittent claudication. When people who have severe claudication take ginkgo, over time the herb improves their ability to walk. |

What to Avoid
Unfortunately most Americans indulge in an abundance of processed foods, foods stripped of vital nutrients. |
The herb ginkgo biloba is noteworthy for its remarkable results in the treatment of Alzheimer's patients, and is used extensively in Europe for this purpose.
Anemia
Anemia is a medical condition characterized by a deficiency in the hemoglobin content of red blood cells. An insufficient amount of hemoglobin diminishes the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to the tissues and to remove carbon dioxide. Anemia is a common affliction in the United States, which may seem surprising in light of the fact that so many foods are fortified with iron.
According to New York physician Dr. |
Ginkgo biloba...The ginkgo leaf comes from the oldest species of tree on the planet. Its unique properties have allowed it to survive the natural hardships of the ages, and some say that these same traits may help people slow down their own aging process. Specifically, ginkgo is known to improve microcirculation, particularly in the brain. It may therefore be an excellent herb for those with Alzheimer's disease. And according to clinical research, subjects with this condition substantially improved recall when the herb was taken three times daily. |
Ginkgo biloba...This antioxidant herb, long used by the Chinese, works to counter a substance in the body called platelet activation factor, or FAF, which may act to encourage tumor growth. By interfering with FAF, ginkgo may fight cancer.
•Echinacea...When taken for short periods, echinacea revs up the immune system, stimulating the production and mobilization of white blood cells. It also stimulates cells in the lymphatic system, as well as important immune compounds, including interferon and tumor necrosis factor.

V Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Studies have shown that ginkgo may help relieve depression, especially in the elderly who suffer reduced blood flow to the brain.
In one study, European scientists recruited a group of 40 depressed elderly people with cerebral blood flow problems who did not respond to pharmaceutical antidepressants. The researchers gave them 80 milligrams of ginkgo extract three times a day. Their depression and mental faculties both improved significantly. |

Ginkgo
One of the hottest-selling supplements in Europe is an ancient staple from Chinese medicine called ginkgo, an extract of the pretty, fan-shaped leaves of the Asian ginkgo biloba tree. Fans of these little fans say that the extract can relieve many ailments that time inflicts on us, particularly the ills caused by decreased blood flow to all parts of the body, including the brain and extremities. Among the problems that ginkgo is said to cure are short-term memory loss, vertigo (dizziness), hearing loss and the ringing in the ears known as tinnitus. |

This review article makes the following observations with respect to the vascular impact of Ginkgo biloba extract: Its preferential tissue effect in ischaemic areas is primarily explained its direct impact on both arteries and veins, with the drenergic vasoregulatory system and the vascular endothelium being the preferential targets for arterial impact. The extract reinforces the physiological vasoregulation of the sympathetic nervous system directly, by acting on neuromediator release, and indirectly, by inhibiting their extraneuronal degradation by catechol-orthomethyltransferase. |
