In well-designed studies, Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has produced a statistically significant regression of the major symptoms of cerebral vascular insufficiency and impaired mental performance.
• Symptoms of cerebral vascular insufficiency are associated with a reduced blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain.
• Anyone who experiences signs and symptoms of cerebral vascular insufficiency should consult a physician immediately.
• The modern evaluation of blood flow to the brain involves the use of ultrasound techniques. |

Ginkgo biloba helps to improve the circulation to the brain. Standardized extracts of ginkgo have been shown to greatly improve the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain and increase brain function in cases of cerebral dysfunction (dementia related to depression or insufficient blood supply).23
Panax ginseng is a potent adaptogenic herb that has the ability to improve mental function and stamina as well as physical endurance. Siberian ginseng is most often recommended to improve mental function. |
Ginkgo biloba increases circulation in and around the ear and is commonly used to treat tinnitus. Black cohosh can also help relieve ringing in the ears.
Tea tree oil drops and diluted grapefruit seed extract drops are helpful for ringing in the ears, diminished hearing, ear pain, or ear problems caused by yeast infections.
• Homeopathic remedies have been shown to work faster, better, and their positive effects lasted longer than antibiotics for otitis media.
• According to traditional Chinese medicine, ear problems are associated with kidney function. |
Ginkgo is an excellent example of why protecting plants and animals from extinction can help create new medicines. Ginkgos, the oldest living trees, first appeared about 200 million years ago and, except for a small number in northern China, were almost completely destroyed in the last Ice Age. Ginkgo leaves contain several compounds called ginkgolides and one called bilobalide that have unique chemical structures. The leaves, used as a remedy for lung problems, were mentioned in major Chinese herbal texts as far back as 1436. |

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) leaves are exceptions. Ginkgo leaves are best picked as they are turning yellow, while they are still on the tree and predominantly green (at least that is what the experts currently believe). Artichoke leaves are picked in both the spring and the fall, then blended, each season's leaves presenting a little different action than the other. These work well in combination.

The main reason why ginkgo biloba has such a broad variety of effects on the body is that it makes the whole circulatory system more efficient. By improving both the elasticity and tone of the blood vessels, it enhances blood flow. Ginkgo is unique because it affects all parts of the circulatory system, arteries, veins, and capillaries, and is therefore called a trivasoregulator (able to harmonize the total function of the circulation). A healthy circulatory system will provide nutrients including oxygen to all parts of the body and thus improve its function. |
Ginkgo biloba is unique in its capacity to simultaneously reduce vascular spasm in one area and restore tone in another area when needed. This is an extremely beneficial feature that vasodilating drugs lack.
Huperzine A
Huperzine A is a natural compound isolated from the club moss, huperzia serrata. It has been used in China for centuries to improve memory, focus, and concentration, especially among the elderly. It is well known that memory loss or impairments and cognitive dysfunctions are accompanied by a reduction in acetylcholine synthesis and/or release in the nerve cells. |

HERBAL TREATMENT
¦ Ginkgo biloba is valuable in the treatment cochlear deafness caused by insufficient oxygen and /or sound trauma. This herb has been shown to increase the oxygen supply to the tissues and improve neural transmission. Select a standardized extract containing at least 24 percent ginkgo heterosides (sometimes called flavoglycosides) and take 40 to 60 milligrams three times daily.

The liquid extract of the leaves of ginkgo biloba has been shown in many carefully controlled studies to improve circulation and mental functioning in the aged. Rehmannia, a widely used Chinese herb, is effective in regulating blood sugar in people with diabetes and hypoglycemia and in reducing the inflammation and pain of rheumatoid arthritis. Saint-John's-wort really does have the antidepressant qualities that herbalists have long attributed to it. Ginseng root is a good stimulant, an antidote to the effects of stress, and an immune enhancer. |

GINKGO
(Ginkgo biloba)
Brief Description
Trees have long symbolized to us strength and sturdiness (as in "a strong or sturdy oak"), resilience ("the resiliance of a willow"), and resistance ("the mighty redwoods resist the elements"). The ginkgo, or maidenhair, is the world's oldest living species of tree, the sole survivor of the Ginkgolaceae family whose fossil record dates back more than 200 million years. |

What I recommended Shawna, however, was a simple extract that comes from the leaf of a very ancient tree—ginkgo biloba.
She took 180 milligrams each day, in doses of 60 milligrams three times daily. We kept careful track of her progress during the next few weeks. The circulation to her feet steadily improved. The pain, as well as the chilliness, began to subside.
Shawna's feet were pain free at the end of two months. She continues taking ginkgo to this day—and has never had a recurrence of the chronic foot pain that originally brought her to my door. |
